Andor (2022– )
9/10
This is Star Wars!
11 December 2022
This is exactly the type of Star Wars adults who grew up watching the IP want and deserve.

It's the best Star Wars installment Disney has made since "Rogue One", which is the inspiration of this series. Set 5 years before the events of "Rogue One", this series follows Cassian Andor. Fans of "Rogue One" will remember him as the person who recruited Jyn Erso back into the rebellion.

If "Rogue One" followed the average solider, "Andor" follows the average person living under imperial control. It's fascinating! Following the rich & powerful and the poor & desperate, as they begin to realize the government they once supported has gone from democracy to Stalinist.

No Jedi battles, no epic heroes. Just the grunts, spies, leaders, and financiers who sacrificed everything to win the war against an oppressor. This is a depiction of the type of people, who in the real world, won freedom and liberty for us all. None of them are in history books or have monuments.

Other than "The Madolorian", this is the only Disney Star Wars TV worth a fans time. It's WELL worth your time. After completing it, I plan to Watch "Rogue One" again, with much more meaning. I can't wait for a second season of this Star Wars Masterpiece.

It's Filmed and Edited Horribly
8 December 2022
I wanted to like this. I even watched a synopsis of the original film to understand the backstory. I'm a huge fan of Chiwetel Ejiofor in his past work. Still, I couldn't get past the third episode.

It's unwatchable. Not because of a poor plot or acting. Rather, the way this is filmed and edited is like trying to remember a blackout drunk. It reminds of of shaky cam footage movies. Constantly popping around in time and space in a single scene. Maybe there is an audience for this type of filming, but I am not that audience.

The way this is filmed and edited does not match up with the type of slow burn SciFi that has been written. It's like the writers and producers were making totally different shows.

If you like slow burn SciFi, avoid this! If you dislike disjointed filming and production, or shaky cam type movies, avoid this! If you get high on a hallucinogen daily, give it a try.

As Fun as it is, it Ends in a Waste of Time
2 December 2022
This show reminds me of "The Dev's". Maybe that was an apple production too? I can't remember (ha to anyone who has watched). The plot is not similar, but the direction and production are similar. Speaking to plot, the story is very intriguing

The writing starts off really strong and creates mystery. As a matter of fact, outside of the 8th episode, which is a total mess of weirdness, the writing is solid throughout.

Acting is very good, with many great, time tested actors involved. There are many possible interpretations of what this represents. I get a Scientology vibe, but I can't imagine a TV show that is negative about that cult, since half of Hollywood is involved with promoting it.

Here's the problem... What could have been a 8/10 turns into a bit of a flop.. Serial shows are the new norm. As they should be, given the medium of streaming and "binge watching". However, after 9 episodes of my time, I got NOTHING in resolution. As fun as the journey was, it ended as a waste of my time.

Series makers in the serial streaming genre need to learn that you can not hold an audience on 6-10 episode seasons without resolution. Now, assuming the show isn't canceled, like most, the viewers are supposed to wait 2 years to get a few more episodes? Sorry, no! Any excitement I have for this series died when the first season provided no resolution to the major plot arcs.

This is why streaming serial series like "Stranger Things" do so well. Each season brings a logical end point with more to come from the characters and universe we have come to love. This show does not end, so it feels like an utter waste of time. Maybe we will see more, maybe not, if we do, it's years away.

Writers need to learn the medium they are writing for, if they write a serial binge worthy show, then give each season a satisfying conclusion!!! This is why "The Dev's" was good and this was not.

Foundation (2021– )

Why is this called Foundation? Book Fans Beware.
29 November 2022
Bottom line, if you are a reader of the book series you will dislike this. If you like to read and watch scifi, skip this and read the book series. If you have no interest in reading the book series, you may moderately enjoy this as scifi that has little or nothing to do with the ideas in Foundation.

I understand that a TV adaptation of the Foundation Series is difficult.

The books series moves though centuries and characters regularly. So some ideas to modify the source material need to be utilized. To maintain a core cast, setting, etc.

The ideas these creators came up with are interesting concepts and fit well within the world. The Cleon genetic dynasty... Interesting. An AI, Seldon, instead of just recorded messages, not bad. I can't really fault the ideas. I don't mind gender swapping. All of this could be forgiven, and maybe even add to the fictional world, if the remainder of the series was well written and faithful to the source material.

BUT! This series has nothing at all to do with the books. If not for the first episode where psychohistory is brought up and it follows somewhat the first chapter or two of the books, all they would have to do is switch a few planet and character names and no one would even know this was based on Foundation books series.

Foundation series is considered a Crown Jewel of scifi books. There is absolutely no respect given to them.

Why did they call this Foundation? Why not take some of the interesting ideas like a genetic dynasty, and make something original?

If this was a generic, AND ORIGINAL scifi show, it's decent. I'd give it 6/10. But it isn't. Apple and the creators stole name recognition from a far superior creative mind's Intellectual property and made a generic, unoriginal scifi show. Why destroy a classic like this? It's reprehensible, hence my low rating.

Shining Girls (2022)

Super Solid Thriller/Mystery/SciFi
29 November 2022
I gave this a try because of the high rating on IMBD. I'm honestly not a huge fan of Moss, who plays the main protagonist. Man, my opinion of her has changed, and I'm happy I gave this a try.

I disagree with many reviewers who felt this starts off slow. For me, it was immediately intriguing. It's also not as a difficult to comprehend and complex plot as many reviewers would have you think. Maybe too many reality shows for those folks? Don't get me wrong, there are genuine mysteries, and the full rules and/or reasons of the world are not revealed immediately. You just don't have to be a genius to have some idea of whats going on and follow along.

I know nothing of the book, so I can not speak to the narrative consistency. Frankly, who cares. This is a perfect mix of murder/mystery, character driven scifi, and even some action to keep the slower burn pace moving.

The best performance I have ever seen from Moss. All supporting actors do a great job as well.

For those of you who like comparisons, the closest I can think of is Netflix's "In the Shadow of the Moon". Which was a respectable film with similar elements. This series is better!

I Really Wanted to Like This, but Didn't
25 November 2022
I LOVE slow burn scifi, I have plenty of reviews here to prove it. This was a huge miss. Given such an amazing cast, and a slow burn scifi concept, I wanted to love this thing. Sadly it's junk.

This film has an identity crisis. Is it a space film? Is it an action adventure film? Is it a post apocalyptic hope film? The answer is a little of each and none of them.

The science is just silly, the post apocalyptic "hope" is meaningless, and the only meaningful potentiality for character development never actually happens. It's a well funded junk film.

I really can not recommend this to anyone, as it has no appeal to any genre.

Infinite (2021)

Wasted Potential of an Intriguing Concept
14 November 2022
The underlying universe this movie builds upon is fascinating. Human consciousness live infinite life's, we reincarnate after death. The vast majority of people have no memory of their pasts lives, but for some unknown reason, a small minority have the ability to recollect past life memories, skills, and experience. Over time, opposing factions have formed as a result of people dealing with this experience. Imagine the power, wealth, and knowledge that a group could build when planning for many generations in the future.

Sounds fascinating right? Wrong. Had this idea been fleshed out in some type of Highlander-esque fashion, seeing how past lives impact current characters. Or maybe some type of play on the meaning of life. Or... Well, the possibilities are endless with such a smart idea.

Instead we get a Fast and Furious Movie. That's it. No insight from such a complex concept,, no character development that has taken place over 1000's of years. Just another action flick.

If I were to rank this as a generic action flick, its decent. Maybe 6/10. Marky Mark is in full form and it's somewhat entertaining, as are all of Marky Mark's action flicks.

I arrived at 3/10 because it's such a wasted concept. Under even the most basic competent writing, production, and direction, this idea could have fleshed out an amazing saga. Sadly it was not. I wish they had saved the idea for someone who knew how to use it.

So Much Fun to Find the Connections
11 November 2022
This is another great cerebral, character driven SciFi from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. I have yet to be disappointed with these guys and this is no exception.

Plenty of other reviews have summarized the plot here. I wanted to focus on something else.

Much of the fun of Benson and Moorhead's movies is finding the connections to their previous works. Sometimes the connections are more obvious, sometimes subtle. In this film they more subtle. However each entry (even Spring) is tying together characters and plot lines. Given how brilliant their screenplays are, It makes a fan like me wonder if there is some vast underlying story line that will somehow come together as they make more films.

Anyone who enjoys slow build, character driven, emotional plot, which include SciFi/fantasy elements will enjoy this film and all of the previous.

Highly Under Rated Cerebral SciFi (more fi than sci)
11 November 2022
I highly recommend this to anybody who enjoys slower paced, cerebral, emotional SciFi, and/or anyone who enjoys the cult genre. I happen to enjoy both, which is why I took a chance on it with such a low rating.

This is a compelling story following a girl who had an UFO experience in childhood. One that she has never been able to cope with properly. Her trauma makes her vulnerable to the influence of a cult later in life.

Most of this film bounces back and forth between a four year period when she reaches early adulthood. Although this sometimes feels confusing, because we are often introduced to characters in the present, when there is an obvious back story from the time frame set four years prior, it very effectively produces an air of mystery. Trust the the connections will be made in following scenes.

A SciFi fan who enjoys plots based mostly on scientific fact will be disappointed. This film focuses more on the "what ifs", or is it possible? It's deeply emotional and character driven, with the plot unfolding slowly.

I gave it a 9/10 to help offset some of the lower ratings. Realistically It's probably a 7.5/10.

I find the most helpful part of reviews, when undecided about investing my time in a low ranked film, is a comparison to other movies. If you enjoyed Brit Marlins "Sound of My Voice" or "The Endless", both of which also have cult themed SciFi, you will love this film. Obviously, I recommend both of those films if you enjoyed this one.

Read This: Adults who Shy Away Becuase it's Animated.
11 October 2022
Relevant information, I just watched this series in 2022. I'm a gen X'er who grew up watching the original trilogy on VHS. I thought the prequels were serviceable and improved with each one, but mostly, I was just excited to see Star Wars on the big screen again. I didn't read the expanded universe. I thought the Disney reboot was serviceable in the first movie, and was at it's peak in Rouge One (best Star wars movie). Then... WTF? Horrible last two movies!!

I assumed Star Wars was lost.

I became intrigued again after watching the Mandolorian. It was good, but I felt like I was missing part of the universe. CLONE WARS IS IT! It is the most massive Star Wars experience a fan could wish to have. I had missed this series because it is animated, and I was an adult. I don't get into anime.

All of that being said. Yes, it's weird to have your favorite Star Wars Characters looking different, but the animation is awesome, and you get used to it.

However, it's the story telling that matters here. The first two seasons were decent enough to keep me watching, but after that, the remainder of the series is exactly what star wars should be! SIMPLY AMAZING.

The bottom line: If you are an older Star Wars fan who has not seen this series because it's animated, you have missed out. It is amazing, and in many ways makes the prequels soo much better and re watchable after this series. It is literally the gem of Star Wars universe storytelling. Please do not miss it.

Kill Command (2016)
9/10
Very Solid Low Buget SciFi Action
8 October 2022
First off, this film was made on a budget of about one million. Frankly, it looks and feels better than similar SciFi action movies with a budget 100X that. I'd rather have 100's of movies like this, rather than a single Independence Day 2, or Moonfall.

Several reviews have had a problem with the script, specifically dialog. I disagree and think it was competent. The problem with most modern writers is they can not find a way for each scene to be meaningful. This is not true of Kill Command. The dialog is short, gritty and silly. They way one would expect Marine interactions. I liken it to Alien 2, though the charter development is not as advanced.

The plot is solid. Although AI gone awry has been done many times before, this film creates it's own niche. Without spoiling, there are human character interactions with the AI that I have never seen done before. Think Elon Musk's neurolink.

Charter development is decent. We get a greater feel for the survivors the longer they hold out. The film is not afraid to go after main protagonists, which IMO, creates a greater sense of urgency for everyone else.

Overall, this is a hidden gem for SciFi, action, or AI SciFi fans. Much better than films with 100's of times the budget.

A Victim of Editing
9 September 2022
This is a well acted, intriguing, rather original, Horror/Thriller. Why is then, only rated a 6? Editing.

The "rules" governing the villain in this film seemed to have changed significantly half-way through. There is even a scene near the end which references something that never happened in the film. It seems obvious that a critical scene explaining some important details was edited out for some reason.

That's really too bad, because it ruined the movie for me. I spent waay too much time in the third act trying to figure out why the rules had changed. It caused me to miss some of the emotional impact of the subsequent suspense, reveals, sacrifices, and very good ending.

(Tangent: This was probably another case of a greedy studio not wanting to spend a few bucks on a reshoot that would have tied everything together. "Naw", they figure, "Joe and Jane six pack won't notice the continuity error". Well, guess what, I'm the market for this movie and didn't see it until it was free on YouTube because of the bad audience reviews. So Ha!)

Anyway despite the plot hole created by obvious editing flaws this a really good, a hidden gem. Great atmosphere, great acting, great ending. It could have been an 8/10.

The Orville: Electric Sheep (2022)
Season 3, Episode 1
4/10
My Excitement for this knew season was dampened
8 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This review is based off the first episode of the third season only. Overall the first two seasons of this series is an 8/10.

Personally, I was really excited this show was coming back, but ended up disappointed.

Positives: The budget is obviously higher with this renewal. Better visuals, sets, ect, bringing this show to near movie quality. The show maintained it's moral heart with an attempted message about suicide.

Negatives: The suicide message was undercut because of the particularly horrible use of a "reset button" script element used to make it all OK. I don't like "reset buttons" in scripts anyway. If you want to write something have the balls to make it stick or else all emotional elements in future episodes are gone. The audience knows you're just going to reset them anyway.

Each season this show loses more and more of the quirky light hardheartedness. Mid point of season 2 was a perfect mix of drama and comedy. Now it's moved to the opposite end of season one and is all drama, no lighthearted quirkiness. Sorry, but you can't transform Scott Grimes charter to Mr. Serious mentor after the first two seasons. I hope this trend changes as the season moves on.

The most important negative is this new character "Charlie". Just horrible! She Oozes with Gen Z self righteousness who was born with gifts she didn't have to work for and was the absolute main character in this first episode. So much so, we barely saw half of the original cast. Towards the end, I literally had to skip past her dialog to make it through the episode. If she continues play such a central role, the writers had better develop her arc quickly or they will lose me as a viewer.
