Black Cake (2023)
Something is off in the pacing.
Gorgeous to watch with beautiful shots of the locations. Lovely costumes help set the time and the scenes.
The events unravel in an odd pace though. You can't really say the plot is slow, but the buildups to, I think, what are supposed to be "surprise" moments take so long that the moments don't truly land with the impact they were intended to. For example, the first episode could have easily been trimmed down to a half hour, giving the big plot turn(s) more dramatic punch. As it is, most of the important moments hit in the last 10-15 minutes of each episode.
Also, the murder mystery aspect of "Black Cake" isn't a mystery at all. The culprit is pretty obvious from episode one.
You (2018)
Why Season 4 Just Doesn't Fit: A Theory
So no matter you slice it, Season Four is its own thing. One reviewer here argues that this current season (part one of S4) is just breaking the formula and that's all good because who wants constant repetition?
Yeah, no.
This season is so divergent from the mission of the series it comes off out of left field entirely. My theory is that this kinda generic Brit-flavored (sorry, Brit-flavoured) script was floating around Hollywood, un-produced for a bit. The show runners of "You'," up against a dealine for the new season, grabbed it, thinking they could hammer/shoehorn/twist this Whodunit into a workable series with minor tweaks.
Notice how Marienne's catch-up storyline barely rates 20 minutes of screen time? The other "catch-ups" are also mighty short and awkwardly worked in.
I had this same feeling watching the second and third seasons of "The Sinner," too.
Just a theory. But if you took Joe out of this London story, it could still pretty much function with any visiting American guy.
A League of Their Own (2022)
Big fan of the movie. Really liked the series
I have to admit that I was a little wary of getting into the series because I was such a big fan of the 1992 film with Rosie O'Donnell, Geena Davis, Lori Petty and Madonna. (The movie hit a real soft spot for me and my mom. Ma played in a softball league, and that time she spent with her team meant so much to her. Especially during her divorce.) This new take for Amazon Prime deep dives into plots just hinted at in the movie. And It runs with them, while still keeping its eyes on the ball: The love of the game, and the joy of being part of a team. The characters all still ring true, and there's so much heart in every episode.
Tell Me Lies (2022)
The. Guy. Looks. 40
I mean, why not hire an actor who looks at least in his 20s or early 30s? The first episode, at the first appearance of the boyfriend, we thought, "Is it parents weekend at her college?" On top of that, he doesn't exude any charisma or the twisty, evil seductiveness I think he's supposed to possess. Another review mentioned how, for this type of series, an attractive bad-boy lead is absolutely key. They're totally right. The lead in this case, kills interest. (Also wasn't at all drawn in by the lead actress. We're continually told she's an "ice queen" yet she's pretty open and amiable to her new college friends. Didn't really get a sense of her personality much beyond that she doesn't like her mom.)
