Outlast (2023)
Great concept, though some really despicable people
The concept for this show was amazing. It was like "Survivor" but they actually have to survive lol.
I'll give it a 6/10 just for the concept, but it's highly likely you'll be fuming by the end.
Spoilers below:
The hypocrisy of two of the Team Alpha members, complaining of how their team mate trashed their tent when he switched sides made me want to put my fist through the tv. They did the EXACT same b.s. To another player just a couple episodes prior.
Just know you'll spend quite a bit of time with some angry, man-hating gals who either spend their time acting high and mighty ("of the universe provides") but do total trash tactics to make it to the finale. Can throw shots but can't take em.
Halloween (2018)
I love this movie.
To me, this is the only sequel to 1978's masterpiece that was ever made.
Love the cinematography, vibe, acting, and kills! Seeing Laurie all these years later, and how her traumatic experience shaped her is believable and captivating to watch... especially when she has a moment in her basement with her daughter near the end of the film. You can see that everything she did while raising Karen was from a place of love, even if it was misunderstood.
This movie has some of the best moments, including a long "one take" that follows Michael from killing a victim in her house, snagging the knife in the kitchen, walking past a crib, outside to another house, and it played out quite amazing. There are a few moments of elevated filmmaking brought to the genre or horror like this.
I always loved Halloween as a kid, but I never really got into or enjoyed sequels until now. I'm totally okay with this one erasing anything that happened after the original.
Halloween Kills (2021)
Not as bad as you remember it being when released
Sure, there are some questionable character choices (Lonnie, why do that thing you do solo? Brackett... all your lines were delivered so painfully), and yes, 100% the filming approach taken for the "Mob" scene falls dangerously close into cringe territory upon rewatching, however the rest of this movie holds up and really goes from story beat to story beat til the very end.
The mob stuff in the middle slowed the pace down, but after rewatching it immediately after the 2018 film, I was quite surprised to see how everything else flowed quite well!
The "1978" scenes were top notch - a total joy to watch and an incredibly strong opening for the film.
Every scene that Michael is in is 10/10 amazing.
I feel that this movie can only be fully judged based on how Halloween Ends plays out, and I found I really enjoyed this movie a lot more upon a second viewing, after time passed from when it was released in theatres.
