Short, interesting film that packs some punch.
10 July 2022
The film runs about an hour which is nice. There's no padding, but the characters are developed nicely. One gets a feel for everyone portrayed.

As for the meat of the film, I will say it's a challenging message.

Childhood's End: The Overlords (2015)
Season 1, Episode 1
5/10
Interesting premise, poor execution
3 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The film addresses the subject of a benevolent world government. The fact that the rulers are aliens seems unimportant. The achievement of paradise has haunted philosophers for centuries. Unfortunately, the film glosses over these troubling issues. Peace is achieved by removing the wall between Israel and Palestine. Saudi oil is no longer needed, so their pipelines are used to irrigate Africa?

No great thought was given to the most minor issues. The script isn't great, and there aren't too many likable characters. We will see how part two goes. But if the introductory episode fails, how will they be able to tackle the "meat" of the story?

Below Average
26 April 2022
Maybe it's me but the quality of these mystery shows seems to be on the decline. After watching the first four episodes of season one, they seemed to have run out of ideas. Sure, there were cosmetic differences but the stories were all too predictable. Though an occasional chuckle helped me finish watching the episodes.

The Shakespeare gimmick combined with some unusual crimes can't cover up sub-par writing. And for heaven's sake, how anyone could give this a ten is beyond belief.

Lack of self awareness
8 March 2022
If this was a metaphor for teen suicide, it fails on all accounts. Not only doesn't the film offer any insight into this horrific problem, but it also suggests living a life that would exacerbate the problem. Mara is a foul-mouthed, aimless, amoral teenager whose great insight is to give life the middle finger, make no plans, live for the moment with either booze or drugs to help you along. No one involved has the slightest idea. The emptiness of the film is exemplified by the gratuitous insults hurled at Donald Trump. Such lazy infantile writing.

That said, if this was just meant to be a just rom/com or thriller, then it fails even more miserably.

Below average Brit mystery
10 February 2022
I don't understand the high rating. The only reason that I can think of is that's British. There are a number of Brit mystery series, most of them quite average but this isn't even in that class. There's your typical quirky supporting characters. But there's a thin line between quirky and irritating. The main cast is so bland that they defy you not to fall asleep.

The story line in episode 1 was stupid. There's no other description needed or even possible. Telling you to skip this show is my good deed for the day.

Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020–2024)
3/10
Depressing and painful
26 January 2022
The good news is that's it's an interesting idea and it looks good. The bad news is that it's a depressing series that is painful to watch. It appears to have been written by teenagers who are constantly throwing hissy fits. And, hilariously, they recently discovered some swear words and love to giggle about them. I watched five episodes: three of them from season one, two from season two in the hope things had improved. They hadn't. In fact, one of the story lines from season two almost exactly paralleled a story from season one.

So, what's the depressing part? I'm not sure what the target audience is. It's not only too immature for adults but for children too. There are guests from the Star Trek universe such as Q and Troi. And while they provide some interest, ultimately it becomes depressing to see them associate themselves with this program. Also hard to believe that with the great wealth of material to draw upon, the writers manage so few amusing or interesting stories, characters or even memorable lines. But most depressing is that the producers of this show have so little regard for Star Trek fans that they think they can put out this tripe and expect us to watch.

Zombie Island (2018)
7/10
Pretty goodd but not a comedy
12 July 2021
I was in the mood for a silly horror comedy and this one was described as such but it isn't. But it an above average zombie flick. Characters were developed nicely and you care about their demises

A number of characters act in a noble fashion, it had none of the stupid characters which seem to abound in these movies. Several tense moments punctuate the brisk action pace of the movie. At roughly 75 minutes it passes quickly and enjoyably.

To be fair, the ending was so-so, coming off a nice but predictable twist. So that kept it from being an 8 which is the highest rating that I would give to a zombie movie.

Best episode that I've seen so far
5 May 2021
Thirty episodes in and this is the first twist that i didn't see coming.. The story is so-so but the two actors provide enough to keep you interested until the ending. I had to rewatch it to realize what a nice job they did providing clues to the ending. Perhaps, someone paying more attention will guess the ending but most episodes don't demand that much thought.

One of the worst Hitchcock episodes
5 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A nonsensical story that has little humor or wit. There's little to be gained from pointing out all the silliness as one example should suffice. In order for Townes's plot to work, he would have to "keep" Inger Stevens until the caddy patsy is executed. Exactly how long would that take?

And the resolution is quite simply stupid. With over 200 episodes to chose from this one is a must-miss. What a waste of the beautiful Inger Stevens.

Those of us caught in between get let down in the end
13 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was on the fence about renting this until I saw Emma Roberts was in it. Was I disappointed.

That said, other reviewers have pointed out that the film takes shots at both sides but neglect to say that it eventually comes down on the elites side. There are a few nuances other viewers have missed. The 12 were chosen because they spread a false conspiracy story about some liberal elites. The ensuing uproar cost the elites their jobs and ruins their lives. This seem a bit far fetched but we will let that slide.

Our heroine, mistakenly believed to be a deplorable, is a stand-in for those of us caught in between two crazy fractions. But the film can't be completely fair. Yes, the elites are portrayed as pretentious buffoons. (The bit about the posion sda is hilarious). On the other side, Don is a stark raving bigot. Even-handness? Not so much. But the ending where Athena is compared to Snowball from Animal Farm comes out of nowhere. The film had a chance to be an interesting satire on today's society but in the end fails.

Doctor Who: Oxygen (2017)
Season 10, Episode 5

Last episode I will ever watch
16 May 2017
I have been watching Dr. Who since 1978 but no longer. Such anti- capitalism claptrap might be in vogue once again, but it no longer can be excused as idealistic nonsense mouthed by good-meaning people. Capitalism, private property and the freedom to interact voluntarily with others, has enabled billions of people to not only survive but has lifted many of them out of poverty. The alternative, which this episode coyly neglects to mention, has impoverished billions and led to the murder of tens of millions of people in the 20th century. It would be unfairly dignifying this episode to say that it was written by someone with a third-grade education. That anyone would consider this episode as some sort of intelligent social commentary is beyond belief. In addition, the story drags, the plot makes no sense, and there is no character development. There is a ridiculous attempt to give the viewer some interest in the characters at the beginning but it also is ridiculous and outright laughable. I defy anyone to name a worse episode of Dr. Who EVER made.

Alien Outpost (2014)
2/10
Both unintentionally humorous and downright painful to watch
2 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The obviousness of the film's message has been stated by other reviewers. And, sadly, it is presented in such a simplistic way that could/should only appeal to a limited audience. If you are a proponent of American foreign policy, you will enjoy this movie. The soldiers are about as stereotypical as one can get. The aliens, able to cross vast distances of space, can't shoot straight. The Mid-Easterns, in a slightly different touch, are both portrayed as allies of non-humans and brainwashed. The attempted brainwashing of an American, naturally, fails to take hold, and then he begs to die instead of betraying his comrades. And so on. The unintentionally funny part comes at the end of the film. The film is dedicated to the under-appreciated men who protect us from these non-humans. In what world does this filmmaker live? Under-appreciated? Americans worship the military. So, if you are in the mood for some nationalistic war-mongering, this is a film for you. But anyone who suggests that this is a thought-provoking, intelligent film is misleading you.

Little Boy (2015)
7/10
Moderately interesting film
25 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I am surprised though perhaps I shouldn't be by the rabid dislike of the film by some reviewers. Apparently any film which remotely suggest the existence of a higher being sets them off. I found the film to be rather fair, showing the offsetting views of Fr. Oliver and the atheist Mr.Hashimoto whose character is much more sympathetic than a Christian character would be in most other films of our day.

My problems with the film lie elsewhere. 1) David Henrie's character seems to undergo an enlightenment during the course of the film, but little explanation or cause is given. 2) Why does the father go to war when the son can't? His duty to his country? What about his duty to his family? What about the commandment: Thou shall not kill? It is assumed here that joining the war was the only thing to do. 3) The movie seems to indicate the dropping of the A-Bombs were necessary to end the war, this is nonsense despite what most Americans believe. 4) I should watch the ending again because it seemed like the mistaken identity was due to the fact Busbee carried his dog tags in his boots? This would seem to be both uncomfortable and most likely.

Sadly this had the potential to be a top-notch movie but falls short because of plot holes and ducking the hard questions. Some reviewers liked this film more than I did and I understand that. But if you are looking for a film to watch with your family this one is one of the more interesting ones because it raise some issues which you won't see in standard Hollywood fare.

Excellent effort that ends up falling a little short
16 May 2015
First of all, the production value is excellent, save for one scene towards the end, for what I imagine was quite a small budget. And I found the acting to be above your average Hollywood, not to mention an Indie film. Perhaps because of a number of experienced actors that are in it. No household names, other than Sorbo, but fine actors in their own right. I was especially pleased with the young leads, always difficult to find good ones.

The action runs quickly although not smoothly at all times. There are holes in the plot but the story seems secondary to me. Far from being tedious, the film brings forth ideas which are not in the mainstream and explains them fairly well. I found this quite refreshing if anyone can name a film which is as interesting in expressing a pro-government position please let me know.

To summarize: pros: good-looking film for a small Indie, I was very pleased with the acting, an interesting and decent exposition of fresh ideas, something the industry is desperate for. Cons: a fairly unexciting story line and a muddled ending. Watch if you have a curious mind. 8/10

Total Recall (I) (2012)
8/10
I'm stunned by the negative reviews (somewhat)
4 January 2013
This version is much superior to the campy 1990 version. The difference is somewhat like people who prefer the Batman television series to the feature films. Not being an action movie buff I will not comment on the qualities of the CGI and action sequences. I also am not one of those who apparently consider Arnold a great actor. I found Farrell passable, but Beckinsale was excellent. This version is closer to Dick's libertarian tendencies which offends some of the reviewers. For example it's an oppressive government versus the clichéd idea of an oppressive corporation. There are other examples throughout the film. This is a rather brave attempt to make comment on a number of issues relevant to today.

The Alamo (2004)

Much better than expected.
27 January 2005
I just rented it and very much enjoyed it. It is extremely difficult, especially nowadays, to make a historical movie without offending someone. "Extremists" from both sides will find something to dislike about this movie. Hence the many bad reviews from the mainstream media who, no doubt, disliked the portrayal of the butcher, Santa Anna. From the other side, some may not like the depiction of the American "heroes", especially Davy Crockett. (Thornton is not your John Wayne Crockett) But for anyone interested in a beautifully filmed, well acted, presentation of an important event in American/Mexican history, you will enjoy the film. My problems with the film. 1)Although the Constitution of 1824 is mentioned, its importance in the rebellion is not fully explained. Hollywood seems to always have problems depicting the reasons people rebel. (See Braveheart/The Patriot) 2) A couple of just plain silly scenes. (e.g. Travis suggesting the dying Bowie leave the fort just before the final attack). But nothing major. It is a shame that this movie did not get the attention it deserved.

Great movie
17 January 2004
Stirring, well-acted, and intelligent film about the war. Critics hate it because it doesn't kowtow to the conventional thought. But for open-minded individuals who like history and well-made movies this one can't be beat.

Relevant to our times
31 July 2002
An over valued dollar, the system on the brink, the big bankers and their government stooges have gone too far. Sound familiar? The previous poster attributes the financial melt down in the movie to capitalism. Actually, the movie doesn't touched at all on the causes of the system breakdown. But it is not capitalism, but government interference in the market which would cause such a melt down. But it is fun to see central banking get its just reward, and to see gold emerge a winner.
