The Last Exorcism Part II (2013)
Watch out for... jump scares!
This movie is exactly for you. That is if you like jump scares and can't live without them. I mean I can take this much jump scares, but here they are flying left and right and quickly become annoyance. If only film makers would spend more time developing atmosphere (or better atmosfear), that would be great.
Worst part is that I actually loved original The Last Exorcism and was hoping to see another fine exorcism movie. Unfortunately that didn't happen and this sequel killed whole franchise. Too bad for Ashley Bell thou, as I really liked her performance - subtle yet powerful. Interesting thing is that I didn't like her character, but I liked her performance.
Overall this movie is watchable as long as you don't expect much and keep the volume down.
Lovely Molly (2011)
Worst sound FX ever
Sound FX for this movie was really awful. All that buzzing, whistling, ringing, whining... I really don't understand why would anyone buy a camera that records whining all the time. Or why anyone want to own CCTV with buzzing.
This kind of sound design was pretty distractive and actually made my ears hurt. It's a shame they used this SFX since otherwise it was pretty decent movie with nice atmosphere and some intense images. Also actors were pretty convincing and it was nice to see Alexandra Holden perform as worrying sister.
So watch this movie with sound turned off and closed captioning turned on.
Hostel (2005)
Pretty funny
I live in Slovakia, I live in Bratislava and I consider this movie being one of the funniest horror comedies ever. I couldn't stop laughing when those guys arrived 'just outside Bratislava'. Police beating up citizens for no apparent reason? Gypsy teen gang terrorizing the city? 80's hits playing at the local disco? Tatra 613 as the best car around here? This 'alternate reality' ruined any promise of terror and fear I could feel from this movie and it ended up with only one scary set.
People say this is twisted, depraved and sick movie. Our local posters have tagline 'Try not to vomit watching this'. But to be honest, it's not that gory as one would think. Almost everything takes place just outside frame or someone blocks the view or the movie is cut away just before 'it' happens. After 'Cabin Fever' I would expect more, but let's wait for unrated director's cut and see what happens.
There's been a lot of fuss about this movie around here, saying it reflects bad image on Slovakia, but people do not get it's just a movie. In my opinion Eli Roth simply wanted to show different locations and props. If he would have shown Slovakia as it really is, he wouldn't get this image of scary European backwoods where everything is possible and I believe the movie would be a lot less scary for non central European folks. We do have the newest cars, we do have skyscrapers, we don't have gypsies' gangs terrorizing towns but hell, we have the most beautiful girls in the world.
