The Journey of Natty Gann (1985)
One of Disney's Best!!!
I was waiting a long time to see this movie. Part of the reason why was that Disney made a poor decision by releasing this movie in pan and scan on DVD. After several failed attempts to convince Disney to release a widescreen version, I gave up and purchased a region-free DVD player and then purchased the region 2 version which was in widescreen.
All I can say was, it was worth it. Journey of Natty Gann is a wonderful movie and is perhaps one of Disney's best. The cast features Meredith Salenger, John Cusack, Ray Wise and Scatman Crothers who all put in terrific performances (special mention also goes out to Jed the dog who plays Natty's wolf companion). This movies also boasts some incredible outdoor photography and a memorable music score by James Horner.
The story is about a twelve year old girl named Natty (Meredith Salenger) who travels across 1930's America in search of her father. Along the way she has several adventures and meets up with another runaway named Harry (John Cusack).
I definitely recommend seeing this one.
Bronco Billy (1980)
Scatman's second favortie role
Bronco Billy is such a great movie. You know you're movie's off to a good start when Scatman Crothers is immediatly introduced.
The movie is about a Wild West Show troupe (one of whom is played by Scatman) who happen to stumble upon a stuck-up b*tch named Lily (played by Sandra Locke). Because her husband just left her, she asks Bronco (Clint Eastwood) for a dime so she can make a phone call. Unfortunatly for her, Bronco and his posse are in desperate need for an assistant and she just unwittenly volunteered. As you might expect though, Broco and Lily constantly argue and fight throughout the course of the movie. Later on, Lily starts to warm up to Bronco and his pals.
What can I say, I enjoyed this movie. Scatman Crothers steals the movie and (again) manages to out-SHINE everyone else. According to his Biography, his role in this movie was his "second" favorite (King of Marvin Gardens was his first).
This Movie gets a 5 Stars, easily one the crowning acheivements for both Clint and Scatman.
American Ninja (1985)
GI JOE: A Real American Ninja!
American Ninja is about an army soldier named Joe (Micheal Dudikoff) who ends up taking on a group of weapons smugglers who are led by the Blackstar Ninja (who butcher's the English language) and Senior Ortega (who's French by the way). At the same time Joe manages to p**s off the Seargent and the Colnol (who are obviously in cahots with the bad guys). He also finds time to make friends with the army's Martial Arts instructure, Curtis Jackson (Steve James), and to make-out with the Colnol's daughter.
The plot may be thin, but this is still an entertaining movie. What makes this movie great is the actions scenes between Joe and the Ninja's, the hilariously bad acting (with the exception of Steve James), and the hilarious dialogue (ex. Blackstar Ninja- "My men fell to kill him in the jungle.").
I give American Ninja 5 out of 5!
The King of Marvin Gardens (1972)
A disapointing move!
I saw this on Bravo a couple of weeks ago and boy did it suck. Bruce Dern plays an ex-convict who appearently has a secret stash of money hidden away. He plans on sharing the wealth with his brother, Jack Nicholson, some girl, and the girls "Crazy" step-mother.
The movie itself made no sense and put me to sleep half the time. The films only saving grace was Scatman Crothers. He was probably the only good actor in the movie. He even out-"SHINED" Jack Nicholson. Unfortunately, he was only in two scenes.
I personally recommend you stay away from this movie. Instead see "The Shining" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" (both movies featured Nicholson and Crothers). *(the movie would've earned a zero if it wasn't for the presence of Scatman Crothers)
The Transformers: The Movie (1986)
A true classic!!! (contains spoilers)
To be honest, as a kid I was never really into Transformers, I liked it but I was never really into it. After reading numerous reviews of the movie, I became interested in seeing it. When I bought a DVD Player, this was the first movie I popped in. Let me say, I was not dissapointed. This was a terrific movie. The movie itself focuses on the never-ending battle between the Autobots and the Deceptacons with a new menace thown in. The movie starts out with Unicron (the new menace) eating up a nearby planet. After the movies credits end, we see Laserbeak flying by into the autobots headquarters. Then were introduced to ole Optimus Prime himself. He has a couple of Autobots make a run to earth to get som energon. Cut to the Decepacons who find out about the plan. After that, Megatron and the other Deceptacons begin an all-out attack. This is where were're introduced to many of the new 'bots, like Ultra Magnus, Hot Rod, and the annoying Wheelie (who shows up later). Things get so bad they call Prime for help. He finnaly arrives, mows down a couple of Deceptacons and has a kick-a** one on one deul with Megatron. Both warriors are severly wounded and the deceptacons retreat. Meanwhile Optimus is on his death bed and passes the "Matrix" of leadership to Ultra Magnus. Then Prime "tearfully" passes away. Meanwhile Starscream gets rid of Megatron along with some other wounded Deceptacons. Soon after Unicron finds Megatron and Co. and gives them new bodies. Now called Galvatron, he Immediatly goes back to Cyberton and destroys Starscream. Unicron proceeds to swollow up the Moon Bases along with Jazz (my favorite Transformer), Cliffjmper, Bumblebee, and Spike (using the famous "S" word). Back on Earth the other Autobots decide to go after Unicron while being chased by Galvatron and the oter Deceptacons. The rest is all history. Let me just say although I liked the movie what I didn't like was how they killed off a lot of the original Autobots (Ironhide, Brawn, ect.). The New Autobots aren't as good as the originals. Plus Megatron was a much better leader than Galvatron. I also din't like Spike's annoying son Daniel. Aside from the flaws, this is still one of my favorite movies and I have no regrets buying it.
