Arrow (2012)
Over-rated
This show has developed it's own dialogue concerning "it gets better." I just don't understand how simply introducing a "new" character and having Arrow fight him magically changes the dialogue or acting.
I think at best, it can be said that there are a few interesting enough characters, and if you nod your head to the idea that comic book adaptations are going to be cheesy, then you you get something that solely passes on a network like CW.
The "defense" of the show I never really hear. It amounts to "you don't get it! Everyone likes different things! Flashbacks and notable characters from the story are cool!"
Sometimes a death of a major character you can feel in your gut. Sometimes even a supporting character can leave you on edge once they're axed. In this setting, a story telling tool like that felt gimmicky.
Ironically, I think there's a ton of redundancy in the story telling and as many arbitrary danger scenarios, presumably for one more chance to say "you have failed this city." The black and white mask guy, Diggle, and the computer nerd girl are the only ones that seem to remain consistent or have clear motivation. I've consistently disliked Arrow and I think it's because I want his face to move.
A small comparison between this an Agent's of Shield. When Sky got shot, I was worried. Independent of the kinda crap first season, the idea that she could be offed made me concerned about how the saga and story would continue. In Arrow, even the characters I marginally like, I can't remember their names and couldn't count how many times I'm supposed to have believed they were in danger or be dead. And I still don't care either way.
Terriers (2010)
Solid, but not "special"
I kind of feel bad rating this a 7. The story line was solid and the casting was great. I think the dialog was saved by the cast. I don't know why it got canceled because it certainly deserved to have its plot lines finished.
I may just be jaded when it comes to cop/drama shows because of The Wire and Luther, but I think it's a hard sell to have to tone down what that world can look like for network TV. At the end of the day, I enjoyed watching the show, but it never called to me with that itch that just needs to know how it ends. Even knowing it's not coming back I'm left basically shrugging my shoulders happy to imagine how the plots might resolve.
I think that's the problem, I feel like I could write it.
