Kingdom (2014)
You must persevere. If you don't you'll miss out...
... because this is a slow burner which grows, develops, evolves into something epic and something which is nothing short of a masterpiece.
I can imagine viewers who like adrenaline rush TV turning off after a few episodes but my advice to them is - don't.
The characters seem perfectly casted and their performances are breathtaking. I had no option but to rate this 10 out of 10.
As other reviewers have said, this series has had limited availability and that is an absolute travesty.
It's not a spoiler to say that the finale took me completely by surprise and almost moved me to tears. Watch it and you'll know what I mean.
Breaking Bad (2008)
My life felt emptier........
......after I had finished watching it and it took me some time to concentrate on another series. The problem was that I felt I had just watched the best ever and I was never going to see anything as good again. I still believe that but I've come to terms with it.
I genuinely envy people who have yet to watch it and have that experience to come.
You know when you wish you could unsee something? In this case it would be be because I'd love to see it again.
Having said that I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it again.
It just wouldn't be the same second time around.
I do actually know people who said that they started watching it, didn't like it, and gave up on it, including close family members. I can't comprehend why someone wouldn't like it.
But the series itself is magnificent. Bryan Cranston's Walter journey as Walter White from family man to all consuming narcissist is as subtle and gradual as it is masterful. And the other actors in his universe give powerful performances and only add fuel to his fire.
The show's writer, Vince Gilligan, has consistently stated that there will not be another season which fans kinda understand, considering how the show ended, and they would not want to see the show's legacy tarnished. Having said that there isn't a man, woman or child who wouldn't watch another season on the edge of their seats.
The Space Between Us (2017)
*** This review may contain spoilers ***
The premise of the film made it sound right up my street so a film I was really looking to watching didn't live up to my expectations, although I did enjoy it.
The ending spoilt it a tad for me though. Tulsa seemed a directionless foster kid with no family ties on Earth and who 'hated everybody' so why didn't she force the issue and go with him. That would have made a better film wouldn't it? Or was it Tulsa being trained by Kendra right at the end in readiness to travel to Mars in a sequel?
Apologies if these points have already been raised.
Saint John of Las Vegas (2009)
A waste of Steve Buscemi's talents
Steve Buscemi is at his best when working with a fast-paced script full of unanswerable one-liners (see 'Delirious'). Unfortunately the script for this film was was not of this ilk, and a Steve Buscemi at half speed is not a funny Steve Buscemi. What were the script writers and/or directors thinking of? Rarely do films with such potential for comedy fall as short as this one has. I watched it until the rolling credits for the main reason of seeing what the unsubtle twist was going to be. There was clearly going to be one and when it arrived it was as surprising as sunrise. In terms of entertainment value it's just about watchable but if you're a Steve Buscemi fan you might be disappointed with this when you quickly conclude that you have seen the man in far better form.
