The Babushkas of Chernobyl (2015)
Not depressing, but actually sort of fun
What a wonderful film! You would think it would be depressing given the subject matter, but you learn about the women who are so not only surviving, but actually thriving so near the location of the disaster we only heard about in the west, and until recently did not know the extent of what happened after "Chernobyl". I was surprised at the emotional connection. I felt with these women who I literally have nothing in common with having grown up as an entitled Westerner. You'll learn some cool stuff that you didn't know, including why a Russian video game is relevant to these women's current lives. It's a great companion piece to the HBO series on Chernobyl.
Exposure (2022)
What an adventure
Shows the true power of women. Incredible cinematography. Wonderful story of a group of women and their quest to get to the North Pole. Holly Morris not only produced, directed but also was a principal cinematographer. There's an interesting dynamic between all these women as they look to conquer a seemingly insurmountable goal. Film takes place in a variety of locales from hot to very very cold. The score is also delightful and although there's a lesson here about the Arctic and our changing environment you will feel good after seeing this film. You can tell the love and devotion the filmmakers had in making this film.
The Donut King (2020)
Wow Donuts
Who doesn't love donuts? I had great things about this and most docs are hit and miss. If you like donuts and immigrant stories, this is a must watch. Do yourself a favor and grab some donuts for when you watch this.
The Orville (2017)
I was dying to like this
As a fan of Family Guy and the Star Trek Franchises I was so hopeful for this show. The acting is solid but the special effects, plot and the comedy, not so much. So what we have here is just meh. It's too bad as we had such a solid foundation.
Pirate Radio (2009)
Looks great but no
So looks they paid for the rights to the great songs of the 60s, film crew and production, an all star cast but ran out of money for the script. It's too. Add the premise was a good one. I was wondering how I missed this and just must have been one of the movies that never opened and I wasted 2 hours to confirm why.
The Hunt for Red October (1990)
Well worth the rewatch
I just rewatched this 20 Years from the last time I saw it. Despite some other reviews to the contrary this stands up remarkably well. Some amazing lines and a fairly complex plot, definitely recommend.
