Displaced (2006)
"Camo, Chaos, and Confusion"
At first I saw that this film was rated a 10, which I never see on here. Then I noticed that it only had 19 votes and there were no comments yet. This made me leery but I decided to check it out for myself.
First I must say that I am a big Sci-Fi fan, and I do enjoy some good Indie films, even if they are low budget. This film started off looking like it was going to be interesting. I definitely think they came up with a good movie idea. But about five minutes into it I totally lost interest.
After about 5 minutes of narration setting up the plot, it jumps into a lot of action. The problem is that most of the characters are about the same height and weight and all wearing similar, if not identical, outfits. This combined with the complete lack of character development made it nearly impossible to tell what was going on. I had no idea who were the good guys and who were the bad guys.
After the action died down a little I thought maybe the film would redeem itself, maybe let us get to know some characters a little bit. But this film was sheer disappointment. Out of about 100 minutes of film there was probably only 15 minutes of dialogue the rest was all kicking and punching.
Anyone who rated this film a 10 either:
a) Just wanted to see a bunch of kicking and punching.
b) Worked on the production of this film.
c) Thinks 10 is the lowest rating...
Ocean's Thirteen (2007)
A quality film for people of all generations
Oceans 11 was an excellent film. It couldn't miss. It was a remake of the 1960's film starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., with a modern all star cast.
Oceans 12 fell short of the hype for me. This is mostly due to the fact that the film wasn't set in Las Vegas, which in my opinion is the heart of the first film.
Oceans 13 however redeems the trilogy in a superb way. The group of criminals with a heart of gold are back in Vegas and as charming as ever. If you didn't see the first two, no worries, as the this films plot unfolds independently of the first two. But if you did see the first two there will be some clever treats for you to recognize along the way. If you like clever, witty old-style gangster films then you will LOVE Oceans 13. Just be sure to pay attention cause if you blink, you just may miss something!
Sicko (2007)
Very Entertaining
Sicko is an editorialized documentary-style film about the shortcomings of the American health care system and how it compares and contrasts to countries with universal health care.
I say "editorialized" because this is not a just-the-facts news report, but rather in true Micheal Moore style it uses real life facts to support the film makers opinion.
It was a great shock to me to see the people who are portrayed as American Heroes on a daily basis in U.S. media being neglected in our own country despite the millions of dollars in aid that have been donated just to assist them. It was even more of a shock to see Cuba, a country that has been vilified by U.S. propaganda over the last half century, not only able, but willing to provide care free of charge to these people that ended up saving their lives.
Even if you don't care for documentaries this film is still very entertaining. Micheal Moores wit and sarcasm elevate this from a typical documentary film to popular cinematic entertainment.
I highly recommend this film to anyone.
Huhwihaji anha (2006)
No Regrets
The English title of this film is "No Regrets" and I have no regrets about seeing it.
The characters were honest and real and the plot was well developed. I cant comment on the acting as I don't speak Korean, but rather relied on subtitles, but I can say that the low budget of this film had no adverse effects on the quality at all.
The best part of this this film is that although the characters are gay, the film would have been equally cohesive and interesting if the cast were changed to male/female heterosexual roles.
I would recommend this film to any Indi film fan, GLBT film supporter and mainstream viewers alike. This is truly a film anyone could enjoy. Don't miss out!
My Hustler (1965)
Nice Nostalgia, but thats about it.
This film was quite boring and lacking of a plot.
An aging, wealthy gay man admires a young boy-toy sunning himself on the beach from his beach house patio. Soon accompanied by his fag-hag neighbor and friend and veteran hustler the three of them make a wager as to who will bed the male beach bunny first. The only other scene in the film is of the young man and the hustler grooming in the mirror after a shower where the younger boy is eagerly extracting advice from the older man about whether or not to sell his body and how to go about it. The older man uses this as an opportunity to win the bet and selfishly steers the boy into a life of prostitution in hopes of seducing him. The film ends anticlimactically with the boy trying to digest all of the advice given to him by a slew of people with only their own interests at heart.
I believe this film is worth seeing merely for nostalgia purposes. If you're a Warhol fan you wouldn't want to say you haven't seen it. It is interesting for conversation sake, but a quality film by no means.
FAQs (2005)
Good Indi Fun
Yes, this film is low, low, low budget. And yes, its far fetched. But I thought it was tons of fun.
See the world in a surrealist fashion through the eyes of a modern gay teen and thats where you get this movie. Every character has been caricaturized for your entertainment. This film is a modern gay Indi movie with 1960's batman style heroes. All thats missing is the "bam" and "pow" animations during the fight sequences.
So support your GLBT Indi film makers, try not to take yourself too seriously, relax and enjoy this film. And remember, kisses are louder than bombs ;)
Slipp Jimmy Fri (2006)
This is a comedy?
Perhaps the Norwegian version comes across differently, but I am an American and saw the English version and honestly I just didn't get it. I didn't laugh once during the entire film. I saw this as more of a drama/thriller. The film was quite sad and dark.
I think some well thought out editing could have improved the experience some. The film seemed to drag on aimlessly at points and i remember thinking, "wow, this is a long movie" which is never a good sign.
I expected a lot of this film because of my great admiration of the cast, but was sorely disappointed. I found this to be a typical drug-themed film along the lines of Requiem for a Dream. The only slightly original aspect of this was that it was animated. I haven't seen an animated film of this type being made in the last 30 years. Although I do remember watching some 2D movies very similar to this that were made in the 1970's.
I think this film was worth watching for conversation sake, but if you expect too much from it you may be let down as I was.
The Insatiable (2006)
A pleasant surprise
I must admit, when I first saw the description for this movie I thought it was going to be awful. Im glad I watched it anyway.
The creators of this film took a tired, cheesy plot and magically turned it into quality entertainment.
Keep in mind this is a rather low budget film with mostly unheard of actors, and despite all of this the film was quite enjoyable.
This isn't a horror film, or a comedy, or a romance, or a drama, or a thriller...its more a tasteful combination of all of these.
The plot develops slowly with perfect timing keeping you interested and tagging along with the main character throughout the film.
The originality and unpredictability I think are the qualities that stand out most with this film.
I may have given it a better rating if it weren't for the glaring over-acting by Jon Huertas (Javier) which was a severe distraction.
Over all though I would have to give my approval on this film (which is rare, as I am picky). I would recommend this film to anyone.
Captivity (2007)
Your average horror flick
If you love the horror genre then this film may be for you, but if you are looking for a new interesting movie with an original plot then this film may fall short for you as it did for me.
The beginning of this film was actually painful for me to watch. It became overly redundant with the captive being drugged, tortured, then returned to her cage repeatedly, with no plot development for a good 30 minutes.
I became hopeful that a plot would evolve with the introduction of a new captive, but sadly he was just incorporated into the the cycle of being drugged, tortured, then returned to the cage repeatedly as well.
The entire plot was predictable. You knew who the victim would be, when she would be captured and what was about to happen to her every step of the way. The introduction of the second captive, I assume, was intended to be the "catch" to the movie that no one saw coming. Unfortunately I saw it coming a mile away and was certain of his true identity all along.
The captor was the typical psychopath with a troubled childhood and the ending was very flat, with the victim becoming suddenly empowered and avenging herself leaving you feeling warm and fuzzy when its all over.
It wasn't the worst film id ever seen, but it was nothing to get excited about. It was far less inventive than Saw or Hostel with less gore and suspense. The "psychological thriller" factor was average at best.
If you're not picky than you may just love this film. If you're a connoisseur like myself than i recommend waiting for this to come out on video. Its not worth the money to see it in the theatre, but it is good enough to pass the time if you have nothing better to do one evening.
