Entertaining parody- worth seeing.
28 April 2006
If you are looking for a gut splitting comedy - this isn't it.

If you are looking to be entertained with a parody of American Idol, and the Bush Administration, you will enjoy this movie.

I imagine die-hard fans of American Idol will probably not like this flick - which is somewhat of a reality check on America's most watched program. Those of you who have very strong feelings toward terrorists will probably find it offensive. This satire humanizes these bad guys. To those who believe the current President is actually closer to God then most of us - will not like it either. In some respects the main storyline plot might be uncomfortable to some and not funny. I thought they kept within the bounds of good taste.

The movie does not make the President out to be a buffoon - only a leader, who is completely befuddled by his role as world leader, somewhat simple in his decision making, and tired of being constantly coached to create the illusion of being Presidential. The acting of Dennis Quaid (the President) was excellent. Willem Dafoe, as Chief of Staff to the President was great. His character is probably more closer to the truth then fiction.

No this is not Dr. Strangelove - it was never meant to be. It is entertaining and well worth seeing.

Excellent - Deeper Than You Think!
8 March 2003
A great Sci Fi flick from 1951 that carries a very deep message. Granted the props are hokie compared to today's standard, and the space suits pretty amateurish, but the script is excellent, and the theme contemporary.

I am not a religious nut, nor do I prescribe to the fundamentalist assault on our civil liberties, but this movie certainly carries a theocratic religious message which should be universally accepted. War and fighting among earth's nations will surely cause havoc among the planets of the universe and man must stop its mad race to destruction or leaders of the universe will do it for you.

Michael Rennie plays the role of a messenger from another world who gently, and with humbleness, attempts to convince the scientists of the world they must become active to carry the message to the world leaders of impending doom unless they change world policy on armament and war. The character portrayed by Rennie is tall, gentle, intelligent, soothing, yet firm. Who does he represent? Why Christ of course.

His speech, nature, demeanor, and message are all symbolic of a greater power coming back to earth to warn the people what might befall them unless they change their mad march toward destruction. This character is named appropriately, Mr. "Carpenter" (get the message) and even gets killed by soldiers bent on destroying this evil force from outer space. Mr Carpenter will even rise from the dead with assistance from his beloved robot assistant.

A great movie that will only get more popular with age. Certainly one of the best Sci Fi classics of all times.

Don't listen to the naysayers -This a terrific action movie
6 December 2002
I was reluctant to rent this video after reading all of the negative comments on it from individuals on this board (mostly from Europe). This is a very good action movie that holds your interest from the opening scenes to the end. The story plot is simple and focused. What many viewers do not comment concerns the sub-plot involving the ruthless moral courage the executive officer had to demonstrate in order to have an opportunity to become a commander of a submarine.

If you are only interested in absolute historical fact don't watch it -but if you want to be entertained by a great action movie by all means see this film.

Oh yes - a couple of other points for the naysayers - there were dozens of recorded instances of German submariners machine gunning hapless sailors and civilians in the water - if you don't believe it just do some research involving the lesser war crime trials at Nuremberg as well as numerous other official documentaries on this subject. Secondly, "The Bridge on the River Kwai" - a great classic, was no where close to being historically accurate - yet there are very few scathing political comments on that film. Grow up historical anger mongers - just enjoy this film for what it is - a solid adventure, well written, well directed, with good cinemaphotography.

Perhaps the most overrated movie of al times
18 October 2002
I can only imagine the reason this movie hit the top 20 of all time is because the majority of users to this site are under twenty. This is a cult film pure and simple. Did it hold your interests because of the tremendous story line or acting - NO! The movie is effective simply because the audience is trying to figure out exactly what is going on in a moment of boredom -like trying to solve a crossword puzzle being worked out by the passenger in the next seat when you look over their shoulder. You watch it because it is there and you might as well be somewhat amused while continuing to be bored.

Grossly overrated - The ending is a total disappointment. I wished I hadn't wasted my time - and yes I did get the theme.

How can this not be the best movie of the year?
12 February 2002
Do not listen to others who say schizophrenia cannot go into remission, for John Nash, in real life it did just that. The best movie of the year and one of the top movies of all time. Written beautifully, with acting that is truly outstanding, the movie is unsurpassed in giving viewers an insight into the horrific chasm one faces with this type mental illness. Russell Crowe accurately lives this character. Equalling or topping Dustin Hoffman's performance in "The Rain Man". (If you ever see any youthful pictures of Nash he even looks a lot like Crowe)

This is a story of an affable but quirky young mathematician destined to be one of the top two or three scientific minds of the twentieth century slowly losing reality to schizophrenic delusions. Crowe's portrayal of this character's struggle with the demons, and his emotional relationship with his young wife Alicia, played by Jennifer Connelly, will leave you on the edge of your seat. Director Ron Howard's suspenseful crafting of the torments and delusions plaguing Nash are both masterful and insightful.

Go see the movie!
