Wojaczek (1999)
dark and haunting
I was fortunate enough to be able to see this film in Berlin, with director/co-writer Lech Majewski present. As a fan of "Basquiat" it was interesting to compare the chaos of Wojaczek's life to Basquiat's. This is a dark story, filmed appropriately in black and white about a Polish poet and his love/hate relationship with his life and the people in it.
Sex and the City (1998)
interesting take on post-feminists
I consider myself a feminist, and I really like this show... it's interesting that the truth of the matter is that modern women want it all- the ability to "have sex like a man" and be intelligent, have careers, AND to get married and have children. It very intelligently addresses the complexities of what it means to be a modern women in the 21st century.
Artifacts (2001)
Intelligent and Witty
I received a copy of this film not quite sure what to expect. I was a fan of Sean Gullette's from his work with Darren Aronofsky.
The seemingly simple plot, "two guys meet to discuss relationships" opens up a whole world of little nuances and variables. Just like in real conversations, tangents appear, and some lead to fascinating, if often quirky statements. We hear about Jack's three past lovers, and each story preceeds a change in location...like acts in a play.
Sean Gullette is amazing as Jack. He is sensitive, arrogant, and lonely, but also delightful to watch. Rick Mowatt is good as Sonny, but he doesnt' have a lot of real depth of character, and some his comments are a little of of place in the story, but perhaps that is the point.
If only Jack and Max Cohen (Sean Gullette's charcter from "Pi") could meet for a discussion...
Sose halunk meg (1993)
Magical
A really delightful film from Hungarian director and star Robert Koltai.
It captured the deliciousness of small-time Hungarian life, as viewed through the eyes of a teenage boy and his lively uncle. Although weepy and sentimental at times, it has enough "colorful" humor and subtle wit to please everyone. Highly recommended.
