Leave the World Behind (2023)
Started good, ended like parody of it self
I went into this movie knowing nothing about it, so the start was interesting enough to keep me going. When two strangers enter the movie it gets much more interesting, but I feel like there were many missed opportunities in this part of the story.
This situation gets resolved too fast and after that it seems like they're not sure anymore how to keep the tension up, the mid point is pretty flat, dragged out and boring, considering the scenario in which they found themselves.
There are some weird occurrences with animals, and the occurrence with deer becomes so absurd and so overemphasized that it's unintentionally funny.
My biggest issue is that somehow they decided to explain everything as an attack or an invasion, but then why go the mystic deer staring at you and showing you the path to the shelter way also? It just makes no sense, it's like they mish-mashed two completely different story lines and just hoped it will work.
No, it makes the mystic deer story line stupid, if you're going to hold on to the invasion / attack story line. Like, no, deer do not become magically super smart to know what's coming and to show you the place where the perfect shelter is, nor would they care.
If this movie just picked the line it could have been a decent flick, but this combination just didn't work at all, it just made me angry that I wasted my time hoping for a resolution only to realize they were just throwing in everything with no sense, meaning or explanation.
Closer (2004)
Stiff and stuffy
Could have been a good movie. Half way through I thought to myself, this feels like a theater drama, and after finishing the movie that's exactly what I found out - it's based on a drama, and it's obvious even to those who didn't know it, like me.
Dialogues and acting are too theatrical, they did a poor job of adapting this story to movie format.
I liked the time skips that were mostly done very well, but on the other hand, I really didn't feel and wasn't convinced about the romantic feelings these characters apparently developed for each other, it was just not presented well.
Jude Law's character was creepy, and it seemed out of nowhere that suddenly Julia Robert's character had fallen for him. From their scenes it seemed like she would rather ask for a restraining order than start an affair with him.
This relationship was the worst, but other relationships also didn't leave the impression that seems to be intended.
There are some neat details, and some interesting lines, but overall it was alien and not relatable, somehow like these four people exist in some kind of parallel lane with no touch to others, or the culture surrounding them.
Stric (2022)
Disturbing, but not in a good way
The movie is not well thought out. It's based on this idea that's a bit extraordinary, and in my opinion extraordinary ideas need extraordinary explanations. Otherwise we could just keep making things up, and that's not good storytelling.
The story is unconvincing, there are so many plot holes that haven't been addressed, or even attempted to be explained.
Camera was good, acting was mostly good (considering what they had to work with), but the story is lacking, and that's something that can't be fixed with nice filmography, unfortunately.
I'm really disappointed, especially after seeing the cast which gave me some hope that it's going to be a good movie.
If you start this movie, and the lack of solid plot throws you off, just stop, it's not going to change, there is no catharsis, there is no revelation, and ultimately there is no point.
Best. Christmas. Ever! (2023)
I'm sure some AI "wrote" this hot mess
I'm not even sure what I just watched. Characters are cardboard flat, relationships fake as hell, dialogues criminal, plot inconsistent, aimless and boring.
It's hard to believe all these people put in work into this pointless storyline. Literally maybe one half funny scene.
Creators just kept throwing anything Christmas related they could think of at the wall to see what sticks, but what we got is a movie that's not sure what story it wants to tell, and no idea how to tell that story.
I gave it a chance because of some names, and while Jason Biggs was neutral-decent (or just being himself), others were disappointing.
