The Last Panthers (2015)
Love the writer but didn't quite gel with this
Kicks off with an exciting diamond heist, that promises lots of high octane action but the series meanders a little thereafter as it explores the lives of its three main protagonists and interrogates the connections between crime, war and finance. The performances are stellar and the direction is lovely and moody but somehow it doesn't add up to the sum of its parts and falls a little flat. I can't quite put my finger on it as I like multi -stranded POVS and was genuinely intrigued the whole time and hoping that the strands would link more profoundly but even though I didn't quite vibe top this one Jack Thorne is an incredibly talented and prodigious writer and I really look forward to his next projects.
The Reunion (2022)
An intriguing thriller
An intriguing psychological thriller with some great performances. I especially liked Ivanna Sakhno the young actor playing Vinca the missing girl and feel that she will go on to be a big star.
I read the original novel on holiday a few years ago and zipped through it so was intrigued to see how it would be on the screen. The novel is quite slight in relation to plot and incident, you could say superficial, and much of it takes place in the head of the main character Thomas and his memories and feelings but the tv show did really well in widening the lens and making new characters like the pregnant police detective.
The locations are beautiful, and the episodes moved along at a good pace with plenty of surprises and we watched the whole thing on ITVX over a couple of day and really enjoyed being taken to this beautiful world while the rain lashed our windows outside.
Would recommend to watch, and you will get the added bonus of a good laugh from the crazy casting of Rupert Graves and Dervla Kirwan as Ioan Griffith's parents even though they are barely a few years older than him in real life! Whoever made that silly choice needs to be docked their pay but otherwise well worth the time.
