Matlock: The Witness (1990)
Matlock episode, on par
So as far as episodes go where the killer is known from the beginning, this episode is pretty much on par. They're not my favorite, but may arguably add some ability to re-watch more than when the killer is revealed.
I do enjoy season 4 having a couple of final Tyler episodes. I enjoy Tyler and Conrad and it's nice to have a small feel that they both have careers that allow for multiple employers and are not monopolized by the Matlock firm and that the firm can alternate between which investigators are used - but sadly, it is short-lived.
Another review placed this episode in a light of not being in line with current cultural and societal norms - however, I find that laughable, specifically since the review was written over 20 years after the episode aired. I admit, I do find it interesting to see the different standards in Hollywood of the 90s vs now - at least on prime time television. So I agree that the views and morals are certainly different than today (are there any "lines" to be drawn anymore in modern storytelling? Pretty much anything goes these days). Again, interesting from a historical standpoint to see the changes and what may change in the next 20 years.
Overall, a good episode to see Michelle have some character development and know a little more of who she is and what she stands for. Also nice to see her own expertise shine.
I wouldn't call it one of my favorites, but certainly a must see if you've not seen it.
Matlock: The Heist (1995)
Best side character of the series!
So Wingate from the The Kidnapping episode is back! I was winding down on the final episodes and realized many of them felt that slowing momentum of a series that was ending. I saw the episode that was supposed to be the end of the series with Ben's birthday, so I almost skipped this one. SO glad I didn't.
It brings everything back from the first sighting of Wingate and keeps things going with the same disguises, "wind" movement and hilarity that I loved. This character is GREAT! So happy to see him again. Would have LOVED a spinoff series, but at least I have these 2 episodes.
Perhaps not up to expectations if you're looking for a true Matlock episode, but for those episodes that were outside of the norm, this one was tops!
Matlock: The Kidnapping: Part 2 (1994)
Gets better...
While part 1 opened weak with a side of cringe, part 2 owns the prior awkwardness which allows for some old-style 60's spy comedy that puts a smile on my face - Wingate begins to grow on you. He starts to take the center stage so that as I hated him as a buffoon in part 1, now I'm rooting for him as a Get Smart meets Pink Panther meets 007 super-spy always ahead of things in part 2.
What throws you off in part 1 is that you're expecting a Matlock episode. But when you dismiss that expectation in part two, now you get an episode that is almost a side pilot for a spin off. I would love to see more of Agent Wingate!
This is now one of my favorites.
