The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
good but not great
As much as this is a great film, and its an amazing achievment for Jackson (from the awful Bad Taste to this?), I think people are being a bit premature awarding this classic status. Afterall, the film does have its bad points. The meeting of the council to decide what to do with the ring ends on what can only be called a moment of pure cheese, something along the lines of "you shall be the fellowship of the ring" after some really unfunny entrances by sam and the other two hobbits. I like to watch films that dont feel staged, you can argue they all do to an extent because we know they are staged, but this scene just feels forced, and the more I see it the more I feel this film is over-rated. On a whole the film is good, not great, but good. It came along at the right time, Lucas had dropped the ball with TPM and annoyed alot of people and this filled a void. Give it a few years and it, hopefully, will fall to a more realistic place in the top 250. Dont be annoyed by this review, someone has to be the voice of reason, and yes, I am a Star Wars fan.
Bande à part (1964)
genius!
After seeing Breathless I didnt think Godard could do any better, I was mistaken. This film is, in my opinion, one of the greatest ever made, theres so many little touches that make this film stand out, the acted shoot out, the moments silence, the dance and my favorite, the whistle stop tour of the louvre. The films influence can be seen in the work of many directors from Quentin Tarantino to Hal Hartley. (both pay hommage to the dance sequence in their films, they are both also brilliant directors) Theres one thing that stands out for me every time in this film, Anna Karina's performance. She plays the part of Odile to perfection. A film well worth finding and once you get it your guarenteed to watch it over and over, 10 out of ten.
