Home and Away (1988– )
7/10
Pleasing Fluff for Daily Viewing
15 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I used to watch Home and Away when I was a kid but as I grew up stopped watching it. I recently, at the age of 27, caught up on YouTube on the last month of the program and I like it. If you're not looking for over-realistic soap then this is a great program to watch.

When compared with British soaps it's more light-hearted, funny and entertaining to watch. I for one don't pay for a TV licence so that I can watch a realistic program about a bunch of unwashed-looking English people shouting at each other. Watching shows like Eastenders in comparison it's no wonder all foreigners think we're booze hounds who like to fight and talk in stupid accents.

Don't get me wrong, Home and Away isn't perfect: between the big story lines where something huge happens (like the Hugo skipping town storyline and corrupt cop Eaves), some story lines can get a little banal, like Alf's fear of a ventriloquist dummy spanning SEVERAL episodes, or Elijah's parents being annoying for an entire WEEK but accomplishing nothing much is a bit boring and annoying, but some story lines keep things ticking along nicely and prevent it from getting horrible to watch.

One of the biggest flaws with this show is that there is ALWAYS someone with a drinking problem every couple of months, there is ALWAYS a wedding that's getting rocky during planning, there's ALWAYS a young girl and an older guy crush... aka the standard soap story lines. It would be nice if H&A broke the mould and came up with a new 'dramatic' story line.

What I love about soaps is that you can pick up after a long time of not watching it and just start; you'll get caught up soon enough. With Home and Away this is especially easy because they keep it simple, which is what I like.

Highway (I) (2002)
Deary me.
1 July 2003
I tell you, the money used to make this film should have gone to charity. It wouldn't have been WASTED that way. Normally, I will sit through any B movie and chuckle at its badness, but this one had corny acting, stereotypical characters and NO plot whatsoever.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I got a hint that they were trying to make it as "raw" as Natural Born Killers. Or maybe I'm alone on that one, who knows?

Put it this way: If you've never heard of this movie, there's a reason. It's very, very bad. Some might say its a wild ride, but it's just an excuse to show a very badly directed sex scene between jared leto and selma blair.

A well-written, well directed piece of art
10 March 2003
I didn't watch this movie until March 2003 (about a week ago) as I watched the trailers briefly and thought "oh, ANOTHER movie about the 1940's... how fun, NOT."

However, I can admit when I'm wrong an I AM WRONG! "A Beautiful Mind" is a well written, well directed piece of art. Ron Howard did a beautiful job directing; he made every shot count.

The acting was flawless. Jennifer Connely is one of my favourite actresses and Russell Crowe has just made it into my favourite actor list, he is so convincing in the role.

Now, I know that some people are nit-picking about the fact that Nash was a little different to the character in the movie, but for heaven's sake, people: ITS ONLY A MOVIE. Look at it from that point of view and not a "Big Brother view of John Forbes Nash" and you'll see it as a well crafted feature.

I've seen all too many movies where mental illness is put in a very camp way and over exaggureated (Think: Girl, Interrupted) but the way John's Schizophrenia was portrayed in this movie was realistic and heartfelt. You can tell that Crowe became Nash for the time of the shoot.

Gladiator (2000)
8/10
A visual masterpiece
10 March 2003
If you LOOK at Gladiator, you are immediately transferred back to Ancient Rome; everything seems so real and in place, it's hard to believe that it's a set with added on CG.

I liked this film. A little long, perhaps (hey, I wasn't into Spartacus that much, either) but entertaining. The battle scenes were the best and Russell Crowe was as magnetic as ever.

Saying that, however, it wasn't his best performance. The trouble with films like this where the speech and setting is "old", the performances tend to get a little wooden, as the actors can't act "naturally" in the role.

Although the history is a little innacurate (commodus was killed in his bath not in the arena) but a movie is nothing more than just that, and so history should not really be taken into account and the movie can just be enjoyed.

One thing I did like was the soundtrack. Well written and worth more than a few listens.

Bring It On (2000)

They're sexy, they're cute, they're popular to boot!
2 February 2003
What can I say? I love this movie! I only bought it a couple of weeks ago and I must have watched it twenty times already. It's perky, energetic and cute, but also realistic, fun and romantic.

It's not a "Chick Flick" really, because I know a fair share of blokes who brought this film to ogle at cheerleaders hehe. I brought the film 'cos I'm a Kirsten Dunst fan, and she does not fail to brighten up the screen.

Now, this is a "sports movie" without a doubt. It's rocky in a sports bra. Normally, I shy away from films like this because they're overly predictable, but this movie didn't angle around the competition, it angled around the people competing in it.

The acting was fantastic and so was the music! I would recommend this to anyone looking for light and fun entertainment!

High Fidelity (2000)
10/10
Long, but hilarious, original and enjoyable
17 January 2003
High Fidelity clocks in a just under two hours - and that's not including about twenty minutes of deleted footage on the DVD. However, "feature-length" movies are always nice to see as oppose to the all too short 80 minute ones.

ACTING: Hilarious. Jack Black, as always, never fails to please a viewer. He's rash, crude and way over the top - perfect performance as the wacky Barry. The other co-stars who play Dick and Laura are great, although the girl who plays Laura seemed like she was just put there cos she was a pretty face. Could be better.

As usual, I have no faults with John Cusack's performance. This man is just talent beyond talent. He's normal joe guy one minute and insane record shop owner the next. He really draws you into the world with a life and personality that easily grows on you.

MUSIC: Brilliant. Some nice classics in there.

Overall, the movie was funny, unpredictable and quite the original feature. I must say I've yet to see another movie like it. 8/10!

Insanely hilarious... fantastic!
14 January 2003
Wow, this movie is great. Being a Cusack and Zeta-Jones fan I just couldn't wait to see this film.

Now, this movie is listed as being a 'romatic comedy'. It's not really romantic - it's insane, lol, and rightly so! It makes a nice change from the knight in shining armour films that we see so very often.

Cusack is fantastic as the paranoid Eddie Thomas - I love those little mood swings! Jones is great as the spoiled hollywood princess and even though normally I'm not too keen on her, Roberts puts on a good show as the doormat PA Kiki.

The comedy in this was fantastic. I loved the line "I hit him in the tray with my face" - instant classic.

Whether this is your type or not, if you like mildly crude comedy and a bit of slapstick, go see this movie!!!

Serendipity (2001)
Cute, funny and entertaining...
10 January 2003
... and I don't just mean Cusack either *grin*

Now, normally, I loathe romantic comedies. Wait, allow me to re-say that, I L-O-A-T-H-E romantic comedies. However, I had seen the trailer for this one several times on front row and I couldn't resist!

Okay I'll admit, I only watched this movie at first for Cusack, but I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised. The plot, though simple and obvious, played out nicely with alot of little messages in.

The humour was great (Jon's friend was great and the store clerk at bloomingdales had me falling off my seat laughing - rock on Jim's dad!)

Anyway, in more detail... I loved the way they brought the whole fate thing into it - the fiver dollar bill, the book... also I liked the subtle signs that each character was shown.

The acting was great and the jokes were genuine and funny. The only thing that annoyed me about the movie was the little kid in the devil suit... god, how many people's "little brother" is he, eh?

In closing, this movie is enjoyable, simple and romantic. If you're in to Die Hard movies ONLY, stay far, far away my friend. If you're open minded and/or romantic, then step right up and watch a great movie.

Original, daring and clever
8 December 2002
I've read quite a few negative reviews about this title and to be perfectly honest, I can't understand why. The trouble is, some of the people that don't like it usually enjoy films that are incredibly linear and "to the point".

What I liked about this movie is that it was RAW. It showed murder and how the media lapped it up like kittens. It showed vibrant cartoons and disturbing images to give us an insight on the insanity that is mass murder.

I love originality and this, my friends, is original. It's something that no one dared ever try before and no one will ever try again. People today are so used to conforming that when they see a masterpiece like this, they think "Hmm, now that isn't right, I'm gonna say it's BAD."

It had humour aswell as horror. It was also cleverly sinister at the right moments. I won't spoil anything, but to sum up, the acting in this movie is great (love the ending) so please, if you're into low budget originality at its finest, check out this film.

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
10/10
Good Lord! Spectacular!! (Some Spoilers)
17 March 2002
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILERS*

First of all, let me just say that Moulin Rouge has got to be one of the most original movies of 2001. I only recently brought the video in March 2002, but all the same I love it. As with most, I saw the trailer when it came out on cinema and shrugged it off as some Hollywood fad and ignored it. That was before I found out who directed it. BAZ LUHRMANN!!!!

This man is truly a God amongst Directors. The cinematography and direction (Not to mention dialogue and humour) for this film gets top marks from me because Baz is my favourite director - I LOVED Romeo and Juliet.

McGregor knocked me six ways from Sunday when he opened his mouth and belted out the romantic power ballad 'Your Song'. Everything just seemed to silence at that moment. (Baz knew this because the lights of Paris all lit up too) I couldn't find a fault with his voice at all, nor his acting. It was so much better and natural than his wooden performance in Episode I.

Kidman did a nice job, though her voice took a little warming to. It's quite thin and high, but worked surprisingly well with Ewan's voice. She certainly did a good rendition of 'One Day I'll Fly Away' though I was more impressed with her 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend' and 'Come What May'. I was particularly impressed with Kidman's acting skills. I've never really watched any of her films, and was pleased to see she could switch from a raving loony prostitute to doing a good job and coughing and wheezing – it sounded so real!

Though the plot is straightforward and simple, Baz managed to make it something new and interesting in the best way he knows how; through pure and utter LUNACY. This was great. Baz certainly picked a clever way of introducing the co-stars – A narcoleptic (of all things) Argentinean falling through his roof and a Dwarf with a unusually long name (dressed as a nun) running into his room, then all of a sudden he winds up helping them on a play. Genius.

A simple, zany and tragic love story (slightly reminiscent of both Romeo and Juliet and Titanic) Baz has redefined the genre of musicals. The singing was up to par, the dancing was moving (no pun intended) and the songs chosen were as if they were secretly written for the film twenty or so years ago. Fantastic. 10/10.
