It gets only worse
26 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It starts of promissing. A guy with a gun demands a diagnoses. An unlikely scenario, but the viewer should be flexible enough to go with it. It is a tv show, after all. However, there is only so much you can take. The story just does not make sense at all. A few MAJOR flaws:
  • the viewer is made to feel some kind of empathy towards the gunman, by showing his background and medical bills. However, he is cruel and selfish for the entire ride
  • 13 wants to die reeeeaaaal bad. Until the ending seconds. She became increasingly reckless because of the huntingtons. This is a development in the season. In this episode however, she is borderline suïcidal.

  • house gives the gun back... again, the guy was a rude psychopath the entire episode. Is House suïcidal too? And even if House woud rather find a diagnoses than live, couldnt he at least let Evans go? I mean, he was still there... and 13 as well. Why didnt Evans protest Houses decision to give the gun back btw? I would run as soon as I would see that crazy look on Houses face.

  • no penalty for House? Are you kidding me? I know he gets away with stuff in the hospital. Thats the idea of the show. But he is commiting a serious crime here. Are officers just going to ignore the fact House became an accomplice?!

All in all. Just dont watch this episode.

A beautiful analogy
4 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This movie starts of with a bunch of puzzle peaces thrown your way (mysterious package, unknown history of the protagonist, an unseen ex-husband, etc.). As your putting them together, the analogy between the story from the book and Susans story becomes more clear.

Not only is this analogy brilliantly done, the story from the book is by itself a hell of a thrill as well. Absolutely great acting from Jake Gyllenhaal contributed to this.

At times, the antagonists were portrayed oddly. It felt like they switched between cunning evil and goofy evil more than once. Also, I felt like a lot of opportunities were missed to further stretch the analogy. Instead, they stuck to a convincing and exciting story, while keeping the analogy to a minimum "the writer is now finally strong".

The Menu (2022)

Kitchen Nightmares

Ive worked at the restaurant industry for seven years. Customers can truely make or break your day. This movie explores the dynamic between server and customer, with over the top drama and horror. It is such a unique movie, because they really make you feel the built up frustration of the servers and cooks.

There is great attention to detail in the movie. The dishes look fly af, which I think is a great addition. In the beginning, you feel like youre experiencing the dishes with the customers. This makes the movie that much more intruiging.

After Jeremies 'the mess', things take a turn. It becomes more of a 'saw' type of thing. Of course, the movie had to take this turn. However, I felt like the turn could have been more subtle. The servers are all unanimously suicidal, insane and sadistic. I understand that this could be some sort of analogy for the thoughts I used to have when having a bad day at work. Still, the movie turns bizarre at this point.

All in all, I liked it. Great acting, asthonishing dishes, thrilling story. A bit over the top, but that did not spoil my appetite fortunately.

I feel like taking a shower after this

The perspective of the antagonist feels so real. The acting is absolutely amazing, which makes the cold heartedness of the concierge all the more vivid. Its a thriller and from the beginning you know how messed up things are going to get. However, with each minute the acts of the main character turn more evil than you could possibly imagine. I did not look away from the screen for the entire 1,5 hour.

Nonetheless, I really struggle giving this movie any higher than a 7/10. While everything is done beautifully and the story is an absolute thrill, it all seems a bit pointless at the end. I mean, the concept of the movie is to obtain the perspective of true sadism. While interesting in Schindlers list for example, it feels like this movie is overdoing it. It will just leave you empty and sad, while thinking: yep, thats true evil right there. Similar to the movie 'the devil all the times '.

All in all, its a thrilling and interesting watch. Just dont expect it to be enjoyable.

A gruesome spectacle... but that´s it
23 June 2023
Most horror-movies have a slow build-up. This movie does not. S*** hits the fan after about three minutes and does not stop hitting it. If your horror checklist consists of gore, disturbing images and creepy dialogue this would be a nice watch. It offers some real creative angles in these areas.

However, the fast pace comes with some issues. In many other horror movies, you are experiencing wonder. What is happening? What could be happening? Which character would I like to survive most? This movie skips this process entirely. Perhaps this is intentional, to create space to further work out some of the most violent, creepy and gross scenes I have ever seen.

Still, the lack of wonder is a big disappointment for the viewer. It does not feel like the protagonists have a way to survive, it is often questionable to what rules the demon is bound and the characters are making some weird choices (I would´ve done some window throwing). However, you dont care to much because of the gore spectacle that occurs in front of your eyes.

To summarize, I dont think this movie is for everyone. Even amongst horror enthusiasts, since it lacks some exploration and story. If a bunch of shocking scenes would be enough to entertain, however, you will definitely like it.
