Haven't We Met Before? (2002)
If it looks boring after 25 minutes, it surely is boring
I believe I read every novel Mary Higgins Clark wrote during the 90's. Once I started, I couldn't put them down. They were absolutely mesmerizing, you had to keep reading because you felt you were one of the characters, or at least a witness. Few novelists can imprint that in readers. And we really enjoy that kind of cinematic adventures, you can picture every single event, the mood, the colors, the temperature, the general atmosphere in each situation. Well, this is not depicted in this movie. The characters seem to play from boredom and it is difficult to fathom what they are thinking, much less feeling. Only Nicolette Sheridan is believable, but of course she alone can do very little to improve the script. Go get the book, don't waste your time watching this.
12 Angry Men (1957)
What a lesson!
It is not necessary at this point to talk about the brilliant dialogs, the great performances and the way in which the director maintains the attention and the interest of the audience. The thing is, this is not about deciding if a person is guilty or not. It is about values. The script puts twelve men to decide if one young man is to be killed or not, so simple... but there is no air conditioning in the room. All 12 must reach the same verdict and each one of them has a personal reason to decide on his guilt or innocence. At first 11 of them have already made up their minds. But then they review the evidence, the testimonies and find out none of the evidence is enough to make a decision. This movie shows us that it is possible that a jury who is too hot, or too angry, or too tired, hence too eager to get home, could come up with an unfair decision, just for their own interests, regardless of the life that is at stake. After watching this movie, I reflected on this question, how many people have been wrongly convicted so far?
