Brothers (2009)
This movie has a 7 rating on IMDb? Seriously?
The premise was great but the screenplay was poorly thought out. There was no real concept of time, or a thorough building of the characters or of their relationships. The sign of a great movie is when it invokes feelings, thoughts, or concepts in the viewer. Heck, I even settle for sheer old entertainment value! Unfortunately, this film failed on all counts. Maybe my hopes were set too high, as I'm a fan of a good drama/ suspense thriller. I recall movies like A Perfect Murder, The Gift, and Seven being a few stand-outs from years past. Never building anything convincing, this movie was out of pace due to a heap of predictable montage scenes that conclude in a lackluster finish. ( The only exception maybe being the scene at the little girls birthday party..but still not good enough to warrant sitting through the entire movie)
Tobey McGuire's performance could be considered a slightly redeeming factor; However, even he too seems to have fallen victim to this poorly developed script.
Oh well, maybe next time Spidey.
The Ugly Truth (2009)
Ugly..indeed.
May Contain Spoilers
I'm never watching another Katherine Heigl movie again. When I was young, I saw her and liked her playing a teen in My Father the Hero. A heart warming comedy where the father tries to protect his overly rambunctious daughter. In the end, she realizes it's better to just be a good kid. Man, would her father be disappointed now!
It's a disheartening comedic trend that they'd like you to believe: Sexist+Crude+Crass= funny. On the heels of box office hits like "Knocked Up", marketing to men through the use of sexism and vulgar language has been gaining popularity. It disturbs me that women are actually dragging their boyfriends to see this smut.
The movie's message tells you that it's better as a women to forgo any hopes of finding a decent man because 1.They don't exist 2.They only will only like you if you dumb yourself down and dress inappropriately. 3.Or maybe if you do find a good, sensitive man..that somehow makes him a sissy...so your just going to have settle on some sexist "victim" of a man, and fake organisms to please him.
Mike Chadway: You want the ugly truth? Tonight my boyfriend and I will be watching "You've Got Mail"...he loves that movie, and he could kick your ass.
My Best Friend's Girl (2008)
Careless?, Yes. Fun? NO!
I can handle my fair share of raunchy humor, but to do that, it at least needs to be funny. It's offensive, dull, and lacks any depth between the characters. I couldn't help but wonder why such a charming actress, Kate Hudson, would settle for such crap.
It's suppose to be part of the storyline that the character Tank is an a-hole.But the dialog is so distasteful, and Dane Cook is so natural at being unlikeable, that you can never really recover from it. When it comes to that time in the movie your suppose to root for him.... "Get the girl!", I couldn't shake the cringe left on my face from him telling small children about sexually explicit acts, or him telling some dude to put "it" in his mouth...and that's just the tip of the this Lewd,Crude iceberg.
If you want distasteful AND funny, go rent the 40 Year Old Virgin again and leave " My Best Friends Girl" as just a tune on your ipod.
