The Flash: Enter Flashtime (2018)
Brilliant Filler!
Enter Flashtime is arguably the greatest standalone episode of The Flash. Although it is considered "filler", it delivers on every level. The writing, direction, acting, cinematography and visual effects are all top notch.
Enter Flashtime offers a deep dive into an entirely new and original sci-fi concept, that was never named in the comics. The series took its time to develop "Flashtime", showing just how powerful The Flash really is. It is very refreshing and exciting to add a new phenomenon to the often watered down sci-fi canon.
The episode is visually striking and Grant Gustin gives one of his best performances as Barry Allen. All of the elements struck a perfect balance to give us some of the best Flash storytelling ever. Dare I say it, this episode is better than the show itself! 10/10.
Supergirl: Worlds Finest (2016)
Superhero Sci-Fi Comedy
Worlds Finest is the first crossover of Supergirl and The Flash. A very entertaining episode! The casting of the leads are spot on and the chemistry between them is amazing! The tones of these two characters work so well together. It was a fun episode that expanded the Arrowverse.
Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist carry their shows brilliantly. They both embody these characters and really allow their charm to shine through. Two funny, smart, quirky millennials that just so happened to be some of DC Comics most iconic although sometimes underrated superheroes.
I don't think Supergirl and The Flash get enough credit for tackling such huge sci-fi concepts in such a fun way. An alien and a metahuman in a multiverse travel story!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: A Quality of Mercy (2022)
Masterpiece Genius!
"A Quality of Mercy" is the crown jewel of Strange New Worlds Season 1. This stellar episode had the tricky task of reinterpreting the classic "Balance of Terror" episode while also telling its own story. They knocked it out of the park. The storytelling here is inspired and by far some of the best ever in Star Trek.
The entire team is firing on all cylinders! A Quality of Mercy struck the perfect balance of nostalgia and modernity with its talented actors, clever script, sleek uniforms, impressive sets, amazing special effects, brilliant lighting and camera work. It all works together to create a beautiful love letter to The Original Series. Masterpiece!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Those Old Scientists (2023)
Brilliance Personified!
"Those Old Scientists" is an absolutely brilliant piece of Star Trek! The live action/animation concept for the crossover was already ambitious, so it's even more mind blowing that they pulled it off. The teams behind both Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks should be very proud of what they produced here.
From top to bottom, this episode delivered! The direction by Jonathan Frakes was executed with passion and precision. The writing was intelligent, emotional and hilarious. The actors really showed off their comedic timing. The styling and costumes were chef's kiss! The visuals in this episode are also beautiful! The animation is fluid, the special effects are vibrant, and the live action sets are top notch. The score was also very well done! Not only is this good Star Trek...this is good sci-fi!
