The Way (2024)
Unconventionally brilliant!
Okay, first things first, I have watched the entire series in one go today because I simply couldn't stop. It was that good! Emotional intelligence, media literacy and life experience are required for understanding this story. And sorry, not sorry, but if you don't like it, chances are you just didn't get it.
The Way is revolutionary, highly unique and above all exceptionally brave storytelling and it doesn't have time to stop and spoon-feed as we follow the Driscoll family on their odyssey out of Wales and across the UK. Which is great, actually, because it respects its audience enough to trust them to keep up.
Along their emotional roller-coaster of a journey, brilliantly surreal flashbacks, dream sequences and even mythical fairytale elements add an incredible amount of depth to the story and the characters and allow us to put the last puzzle pieces together as we arrive at an equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful conclusion.
I cannot remember a series that has ever done anything close to what The Way has achieved. Yes, it will fly over a lot of people's heads, but I will be sure to remember it for a very long time!
Don't take my word for it, though. Best to experience it all yourself!
The Abominable Snow Baby (2021)
The cutest animated film I've ever seen!
Not an exaggeration. It's really that charming! Terry Pratchett's gentle humor, the instantly lovable characters, the adorable animation and memorable score really elevate this one far above other Christmas shorts.
And unlike most of the animated British classics shown around this time of year, it has the added benefit of remaining a happy and heartwarming story throughout, making it perfect comfort viewing for children and adults alike.
Even at nearly 40, I find myself fully immersed in the story and am looking forward to re-watching it as an annual Christmas tradition.
Really, the world is bleak enough as it is. We all need more Pratchett in our lives!
