Man of Steel (2013)
Superman the ....er?
To some it up "I enjoyed the film"; actually, it was better than I expected it to be even-though it does have some problems in that the story is somewhat unfinished and too short to really do some explaining, I am also not so sure on the fight scene CGI's as they look so meaninglessly fake as the scenery gets destroyed so clinically / hollowly regardless of the amount of carnage / death toll that must cause, and SPOILER ALERT.. "the killing of Zod??", this is Superman, the do good, kill no-one superhero.. here we have a "HOPE" symbol killing the enemy to save a meaningless family of 4 (considering the obvious thousands killed 5 sec earlier in the movie while they were fighting it out.) ... easy to make analogies from world news 2013...
Defiance (2013)
More Sci-fi please!!!
As far as Sci-fi TV genre goes nothing really to choose from, not many last longer than season 1/1.5 and that isn't a boring wannabe sci-fi show. i.e. No Startrek (Original, TNG, Voyager, Enterprise, DS9) Quantum Leap, Stargate SG-1, Babylon 5, Stargate Atlantis, Farscape, (hell I could even live with SG-Universe, The Sliders)... the last series I wrote a review for "Continuum" seemed to be promising.... will be interesting to see it return if it does so.. what is it with serials these days, why kill the above mentioned series to put on werewolves, vampires, cop shows, angels,... ? (not to mention the budget of such shows seem to be more than the budgets they replaced..)
Defiance would be interesting enough to watch if it has a script that is more Sci-fi than soap opera or a modern western...something we shall see as the series progresses...
All in all notes on the first show : the CGI is inconsistent, sort of OK at some places, cheap at others, and really fake at one or two scenes. The background story isn't really told "The Votans arrived...", "33 years later"... and very simple intro and a weird start... and we're in a western style town full of quarreling aliens and humans. sort of huh? ... sums up to : for now promising, but all really depends on how the show will go on...
Update : "The interesting" factor, dropped once the series progressed, at 6th episode I can only take another 2-3 episodes more.. it is simply too boring to waste 42 minutes on.
Continuum (2012)
Interesting
I'm a sci-fi fan and as of late I have just about had it with TV shows that are simply not worth the time to watch, I'm finding myself in a tendency of not even watching the channels that these things are on, as even though if the show has something promising in it, it doesn't get past season 1 or 1.5/2.. but most shows shown these days in my view is simply trash.
I was reading the reviews for this on a website and I came across a review which referenced it being similar to a TV show from the 90's that I seem to have missed, it was called "Time Trax", 2 seasons.. which I watched joyfully; though maybe its not the best TV show or a show for everybody, but still it was well worth the watch. After this, I watched the Continuum, so I would agree with that reviewer that it sort of has a similar story, and it seems interesting enough to watch and see how the story develops...
Definitely would prefer it to continue past the first season at least, I cant take any more dumb shows on idiots with powers, witches and whatever.
John Carter (2012)
One of the unexpected.....
To sum it up, I never had even heard of Edgar Rice Burroughs even though I read a lot of science fiction..., nor did I expect anything from this film before going to it... I hadn't even watched its trailer. I chose to go to it only because I had seen all the other films showing that they were showing on the day.
Result? I am very glad that I accidentally watched it! It's one of those films... though maybe not the best of the best of the best and it might lack some things / bells and whistles that some might want.. but it is still one of those films that come out once in a while, which one can watch over and over again..
It will almost certainly take its place in my film collection..
Skyline (2010)
Awful script
What is it with script / story writers these days? I mean it cant be that 60-80% of them have no talent what-so-ever, or have the tendency to think that an audience will enjoy cliff-hanger endings or incomplete films which may or may not have a sequel 1-2 years away. I mean there might be films that are sort of complete enough to watch, but they usually are not written this badly, and do have some level of completeness to them. In any case if any one wonders why people stop going to the cinema, well this is a good example, such films are simply not worth the money they cost to see them at a theater.
That said the effects in the film are good though-out, though they're more-or-less are rendered meaningless due to the script.. The acting is mediocre but I suppose that might be again due to the meaningless script.
Basically if the film had started say, from the last 2 minutes, then showed a 5-10 minute summary as a build-up to that point, and went on from there, it would have been a hit... it has a meaningless script with no real story, and so its just plain awful.
Avatar (2009)
Pleasany surprise.
I went into the movie not expecting much, as I even hadn't seen the trailers for it, but must say that I was pleasantly surprised at the completeness of the film (so much so that I will get it on BD/DVD when it comes out), everything from effects to plot was complete. Now I cant remember a film for a long time that is so complete, as most have cliffhanger endings making them into sort of serials with the next episode in a years time.. I detest this so much that I gave up going to movies altogether.. well part this movie. There are many a deja vu from past movies, some games, clichés...but it all adds up with stunning effects and a nice plot so overall its a great movie and really worth its money, I would recommend it to anyone!!
Knowing (2009)
Watchable film, mixture of "The Mothman Prophecies", "Dragonfly" with some religious-science fiction tones.
Its a watchable film somehow a mix between "The Mothman Prophecies", "Dragonfly" (from 2002) with some religious-science fiction tones from about the middle till the end of the movie.
If I take a look at the film from the point of view of actors, directing, effects and such things I would have voted for it quite highly as I enjoyed it perhaps even the story can also deserve some merit up to the point that it begins spouting "Evangelical", "Scientology" type religious sectarian nonsense... and due to these I think it doesn't deserve much hence the "5" vote. I've watched the same pessimistic end-of-days mentality portrayed in far too many films to not to consider it as open propaganda, which all things considered is even more disturbing and appalling when one sees that this film rated at PG-13... I was expecting more from this film and I'm quite disappointed by it.
2012: Doomsday (2008)
Terrible, just plain terrible.
The title of this film implies a good story, I mean Mayans, doomsday... how can you go wrong with those? But...guess what? They really made a mess of things, big time.. The film is cheap from scene one throughout to the end, not only graphically but also story-wise. The story should have really been pretty straight forward as according to Mayan prophecies the we will be entering another "World Age" on 21/12/2012 which to some translates as doomsday.. There are a million things that come to mind that one could have done with such a story, but it was some how mixed with faith, Christian symbolism, Christianity and familiar scenes to the "seventh sign" (1988) towards the end.. To me mixing Mayans with Christianity is hilarious on its own but I agree that even that would have been interesting to watch if it had been written well, but this film simply wasn't, the story is terribly cheap so much so that its not even worth the watch on TV.
