Srpski film (2010)
If you're OK with being mentally scarred for life it's a great film!
I have just finished watching this film after searching for months for the most disturbing film I could find, and I think this must be it.
It starts getting really disturbing about half-way through, and I wasn't bored even during the first half. Despite some negative views I've read, I believe it has a good plot. It is very simple in the fact that you know something big is going to happen sooner or later, and instead of just waiting around bored, there's enough content to keep the suspense going.
I'd say there are 2 scenes that are highly disturbing; I almost thought I wouldn't be able to finish the film after the first one, and I have seen a lot of disturbing films. It isn't just what happens, it's the way it's done. Some films like Nekromantik are disturbing but they are so clearly fake that it's a little more weird/strange kind of disturbing. Whereas A Serbian Film makes it almost realistic as it does it in a home-video style. And although it is just a film, we know things like this do happen and it scares the crap out of me.
For once I can't disagree with people who give a film I rank so highly negative reviews, because it is just so sick. But that's what I like about it, and it's not just about the shock factor as it does have a decent plot and could still stand as a good film without the graphic parts. It completely depends what you like in a film, and I personally like the films that make the most impact and stay with me for a long time. Though I really wish this wouldn't...
Kids (1995)
Good film, funny at times but advertises safe sex a bit too blatantly
I watched this just after watching Gummo (which I gave 7/10) as they have the same writer. I generally liked the film but I was expecting more, though I'm not sure what. I wasn't expecting this film to have a plot since Gummo doesn't, and I think the predictability of the plot was what missed the marks for me.
It reminded me too much of the films they show you at school that scare you into safe sex. I think for a film this blunt, funny and strange, there could have done with something more disturbing as it was a bit too tame for my liking.
I'm surprised this has such a high rating, though I think it may be because the film has a plot. I suppose the good thing about this film is that it's appealing to people who are into mainstream as well as people into independent films.
Gummo (1997)
Must-see film if you're into anything other than mainstream
I expected to hate this from the reviews I've read, but it was on the list of most disturbing films so I just had to see it. I like slow-going pointless films occasionally, sometimes I really have to make myself like them, but with Gummo I genuinely liked it. It's set out like a documentary so it doesn't need to have a plot, it's simply clips of weird things people do in this town of 'white trash'.
I thought the film was pretty funny at times, didn't find it too disturbing because it wasn't the sort of disturbing film you take seriously, unlike something like Irreversible which is probably the most disturbing film I've seen.
If you only like films with a plot and lots of action then I wouldn't bother with this film, but if you're even slightly intrigued by the sound of this film then watch it! It's certainly not the best film ever but I can't understand why it has so many bad reviews, particularly when I wouldn't say I generally liked these artsy type films.
