Goliath Awaits (1981)
Begs for a sequel
When I see movies like this, I want to know what happened later...how did the people react to changes in the world after 40 years. I was curious about how they would find jobs, make their way in a new society. I did agree with the comments on weaknesses of the film...but the premise was fascinating.
The Shopping Bag Lady (1976)
Excellent for teaching empathy
This film is timeless in its attempt to help young people as well as people of all ages to empathize with people who are at the senior citizen stage. Through the eyes of a young girl, the viewer sees the shopping bag lady as a real person, someone who was young once and had a real life. Its simplicity and delicate handling of the subject make it a superior film for teachers to show. (If they complain about b&w, just tell them, "no film"...it worked for me! Jr. High Teacher
A Successful Calamity (1932)
Sweet films about good people are rare.
In all too many movies like this one, the family members are selfish and care little about others. As soon as Arliss's character confesses to his family that he's in financial trouble, they all jump on the bandwagon to help out. They express regret over being the cause of the problem by having spent too much money. The children love their stepmother. She, in turn, pawns her jewels to help out. While perhaps a bit corny by today's standards, this movie stands out as one that anyone who genuinely likes people could enjoy.
