Reptile (2023)
A good thriller with a few issues
The acting, and Benicio Del Toro is great, sublimed by close-up face shot. Most dialogues are well-crafted too, and the interaction between the different characters feels very natural.
The movie's cinematography is visually stunning, with dark and moody shots that perfectly capture the atmosphere of the story. It creates a palpable sense of tension and unease, adding to the overall suspense.
The movie face some pacing issue, and some characters remain underdeveloped, due to useless elipsis in the scenario which doesn't serve any purpose.
Subplots also are forgotten, leaving loose ends that could have been tied up for a more satisfying conclusion.
There are moments where the film leans too heavily on artificial suspense, relying on the musical background theme to create tension rather than letting the story and characters do the work.
Halfway through the film, it becomes evident where the plot is headed, and there are few surprises along the way.
My conclusion?
Honestly, we don't see so much movies like this these days. "Simple" thriller with low-pace and great acting is a genra which seems to fade a few decades ago.
Reptile falls short of its full potential due to a somewhat predictable plot, pacing issues, and weird characters development.
Could have it been shorter or longer and I might had appreciated it more.
Despite its flaws, it's a decent watch for fans of the genre, particularly those who appreciate Benicio Del Toro's acting prowess and enjoy dark, atmospheric cinematography.
En dag och en halv (2023)
A simple yet great drama in a confined space
Spoiler, I love slow-paced and confined drama where we take the time to know the story of each character.
This movie is all about issues in a couple culminating to the father kidnapping his ex-wife and his daughter.
All the actors are excellent, the rythme is slow but tense.
Don't expect any crazy turn as this on point with a realistic scenario (I think it's based on a true story). At the same time, it is not boring as the protagonist are going through multiple stage during the movie.
If you are looking to an emotional experience, diving into human life difficulties, this can be a movie you will enjoy.
If you are looking for something less true to reality but more entertaining, please look for something else.
This movie somehow remember me of Locke, which is another great confined drama, which share tons of similitude.
