Red Dead Redemption (2010)
Solidified rockstar as the greatest gaming development company of all time
Behold, the first game of the greatest story of all time in the gaming world (The redemption saga )
We all knew that Rockstar was one of the best for a gaming development company for GTA in the late 90s, early 2000s but then they released Red dead redemption. Captivating the world again with the western genre. Giving it a new form of life.
Showing that as a company, rockstar can adapt to any genre and make it their own. And what a way they did it.
Firstly, the main protagonist. John Marston. What a character. A former bank robber, gang member, bounty Hunter and more turned loving father and husband who owns a ranch is separated from his family and is forced to work for the government to bring down his former gang members.
He's your classic western hero, "strong silent type".
His presence is enough whenever he steps on screen in this game. What you see is what you get with this man. He's brutally honest, witty but not cringe, can adapt to any situation he's in overtime and a fu**ing badass through and through.
We see him conflicted, working for the men he fought against for many years of his life in the past. Having to bring down the men who were once his family.
But even though he is conflicted he remains focused of the mission, all because of the love he has for his family. The people he already changed his life for once by being a natural born survivor from the early age of 11. Robbing and killing. Then leaving his gang and turning into a great husband and dad who lives in his own ranch he built with his own hands.
I won't spoil a thing of what John does in either game but you're in for a treat. Just know he is the biggest badass in gaming.
Now onto the side characters.
What a lineup, each of their total screen time is only small when you put it next to side characters in the second instalment but that doesn't matter. Every character in this game is memorable. They are all so unique and fleshed out.
The map I believe shadows Johns character tremendously. It's wild, honest, brutal, serious, mysterious and uncharted.
Set at the end of the Wild West where all the bandits and outlaws have placed themselves in the wildest part of America at that time. That's where our protagonist spends the majority of time and it's beyond incredible.
Then Mexico, fantastic. Just as or even more wild than New Austin (America) but it's not too much for our boy John.
P. S
There's a sequence at the beginning of Mexico which is an all time favourite gaming moment for me. It's up their with RDR2 sequence when you return from Guarma on the horse ride back the camp.
Overall, I love this game. I believe it blew the door open for RDR2.
Everything about the game I love.
Please, if you haven't played it. Give it a try. It goes along with the second instalment beautifully. They go hand in hand.
But for what it did for rockstar and the world as a whole. I'd say Red dead redemption could possibly be the greatest video game of all time. (Along with RDR2)
Saints Row: The Third (2011)
Beginning of the end
After the first 2 Saints row games I went into the third with high hopes. My parents bought me a game magazine months before it's release and I was excited but then I played the game and I felt disappointed.
I've played it many more times after that when I was bored because there are few things that can be fun. However, the graphics and animations were bad. The story was dull after the first 10 missions.
And the main problem I have is that it makes a joke out of every single character. Especially The boss, Pierce and Gat. It made a joke out of the Saints and it was the beginning of the end for the Saints row franchise. The only character with an upgrade was shaundi. Plus all the side characters were terrible, at first glance they can be captivating but the more you delve in, the more dull they become.
It was never the most serious in it's original run but it still had heart felt and serious moments and they made the drama and comedy mix really well in the first 2 Saints row games.
It leaves a bad taste in my mouth still because it had so much potential.
As a true fan of the first 2 Saints row games I was extremely let down by Saints row the third. And everything else that came after was terrible and shouldn't be associated with the original 2 games.
