The umpteenth romanticization of the capitalistic Cinderella delusional tale
Why do they keep making this film? Same ol same ol, over and over again. I do not think films have to be morally enriching or inspiring. They do not need to make you hopeful about things or be a feel-good product, yet this constant depiction of power/corporate/latecapitalist/american atmospheres as something desirable, comic and aspirational is sickening, especially given the fact they want it to be yet another fairy tale about mice and swans. Another modern day Cinderella, who suffers the pressures of the working class life but her existance, career and prospects will change because of prince charming and luck, always luck. I would develop further but it does not deserve any more words, that is what it is, and nothing more. Gross.
Anatomie d'une chute (2023)
The Era of TV-films
Plot is simple and not very interesting given all the story revolves around one main event. It has got the european author atmosphere: slow, eternal shots that add nothing, silences, infinite gazes, screen time filled with nothing while minutes go by. I understand all these tricks can transform any mediocre narration in a masterpiece for critics, but it surprises me how a boring package is able to elevate the mundane for them so much.
The film is not terrible, it has got a couple of witty reflections on relationships, but that's about it, not worth all the tediousness around. Not easy to empathise or even care too much about the little things that go on, at some point you just want it to end, please.
It probably has some style, some "unusal" photo and narrative, petty things that distance the film from the poor tv-film story you are actually contemplating, but do not be fooled, it is not great. I would love it had been tho.
Coup de chance (2023)
German TV movie
It's plain terrible. And I can't explain it but it doesn't look like cinema. Photo is good but somehow everything feels utterly cheap and phony, like an advert in a bad sense. The plot doesn't develop slowly keeping you interested. Things happen without much expectation from the viewer, the atmosphere is poor, not sophisticated at all, TV movie like. Acting is just correct. It is sad but understandable that you are witnessing an author's decline. But it is disappointing too. We were expecting a comeback from reading different reviews, but this is just not much better than Rifkin's Festival. The themes are more interesting but it is painful to watch how bad the result is: underdeveloped, clumsy, uninspired, cliché, obnoxious... also pretends to criticise the rich when it couldn't feel more posh itself and really far from real art. Woody is not back.
