Reviews
Warcraft (2016)
Turns out it is not a conspiracy!
I thought the reviews on the IMDb were part of a marketing campaign led by the producers. Because they are almost very positive while the critics are smashing the movie.
Sure the movie has its flaws but overall it can be considered a success.
Quickly pros & cons;
Pros; World of the Warcraft universe carried out beautifully. CGI's were awesome. Movie is character driven. Doesn't have any mindless action scenes.
Cons; Acting. Not enough background information for non-gamers.
I liked the film a lot, can't wait for the next one. I'd suggest you all to check it out yourself and stop reading these reviews.
12 Monkeys (2015)
Worth giving a chance
It is always difficult to see something you love exploited. Give me some original work instead of re-telling a story. Therefore, I started watching the show with low expectations and it was a nice surprise. In the end I was asking for more.
Acting is better than an average series, and can even be considered very well for a sci-fi. Characters are rather complex with some room for development (which is basically what I look in a new series).
I will give it a couple more episodes to see if the show can fill up the holes but pilot episode showed some promise so I'm feeling positive. I'd suggest Terry Gilliam fans to not be scared to give this a go.
The Water Diviner (2014)
Nice family drama with occasional tears
Contains minor spoilers which won't ruin the plot.
The Water Diviner is a fine example of storytelling. It has nothing extraordinary but it also lacks almost nothing in its genre.
Positives: Supporting cast delivers well.
Yılmaz Erdoğan once again proves himself ready for international cinema. After his success at Palme D'or winner "Once upon a time in Anatolia", this is easily his second best work. His character is quite complex with many inner conflicts. He is a former architect with a conscience who is forced (although he believes in the cause) to take part in a terrible war.
Former bond girl Olga Kurylenko also impresses playing a free spirit in a very conservative country. She mastered a rather difficult language flawlessly in what appears to be relatively short time. Most of the people in the theater thought she was Turkish.
Steve Bastoni and Ryan Corr leaves the audience wishing they had more screen time. Without ruining the plot I must say; Ryan Corr's character deserves a movie of its own.
Young actor Dylan Georgiades was the one who impressed me the most. 12 year old actor delivers in so many levels. We may be witnessing the birth of a future star in the Water Diviner.
Story is well told with minor fantasy elements. As with most of the war movies, it tells the story of the people, not the war. Turnoil in Ottoman Empire is shown in the background. It is not given in detail but it makes you wanna take a history book and read. There are many humorous moments in the movie trying to lighten the drama.
Andrew Lesnie, who worked as a cinematographer in LOTR franchise, works his magic with various light plays. There are a couple of incredible scenes for the film geeks like me. He is definitely the right man for this movie.
Russell Crowe does a fine job for his debut, movie has the personal scent all over it. Sandstorm scene shown in the trailers is incredibly well shot, it alone may be worth to see this film. Introduction of his character is rather funny because we see a close-shot of his muscles. Maybe thats why all these actors shoot their own movies ^^.
Negatives: Some plot holes especially in the character developments of some support characters. Turkish Comedian Cem Yılmaz's character makes major leaps which are all not well / properly explained.
What disturbed me the most was how the Greeks were displayed in the movie. They were like the ugly end-boss, all bloodthirsty. Water Diviner was so close not to be a propaganda movie. I doubt thats what Russel Crowe had in his mind but Russell, you can't just condemn an entire race.
One other negative point is the excess drama. There are various scenes I found it to be longer than it should be.
At some scenes it feels like Russell Crowe as a director is trying to tell so many things at the same time, losing the main focus.
Overall; it is a good family drama, nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. You'll learn some history, witness an awful, bloody war, meet with interesting characters from very different, interesting cultures.
7.5 out of 10
Gotham (2014)
Strong start
It is always difficult to get viewers attention from a superhero spin-off which doesn't include any superheroes.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D did this in 8-9 episodes and got us hooked. However Gotham surprises pleasantly.
Strongest point of the show must be its cinematography. Amazing scenes showing how Gotham really is. This is a big plus for the non comic readers since eventually it is always about Gotham. Clever writing also impresses. It is actually one of the things I loved. So many T.V shows and even most movies now has that unnecessary character(s) whose only job is to state the obvious. Gotham actually respects the audience and let you think for a little. I think it is really difficult to pull it out in such a major production.
Weak points may include the side - characters which may or may not become an issue later on. Villains so far are not interesting enough. Apart from the main guy, there is no one you would like / root for. However, we should be reminded that this is Gotham where there are no good guys.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013)
If you are a fan of Whedon -> check this one out
Judging by the pilot episode, the new T.V series shows some promise. This show is a classic Whedon show, with characters showing some depth, humor and potential for character development. It manages to hook you up with the first episode. However, it is not everyone's drug.
Considering Whedon's previous masterpieces, namely Dollhouse & Firefly, got prematurely canceled, it makes you think that not many (or not enough) people likes his style. After the big success of the movie "Avengers", attention on the show has been high and that resulted in many people checking the TV series. That and high expectations are one of the main reasons for the bad reviews.
I personally had a taste of Whedon while watching the show, just like the taste I had while I was watching Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse & Firefly. I'm happy that he again did not disappoint.
It is about what you are looking for in a TV series. If you are looking for interesting characters / dialogs with some depth into them, check this one and the rest of Whedon's work if you haven't already.
Edit after watching the 13th episode:
For the average viewer, show starts to get interesting starting from Episode 7. Although I love this show, this is not the best work of Joss Whedon I must agree. Still, I advise you all to give this show a chance and watch it at least until Episode 8.
