Gosford Park (2001)
Badly overrated and frankly boring
How this film managed to get such excellent reviews is still a mystery to me. Yes, it features a host of distinguished British actors and a world-famous director. But this does not help the story to fly. After a promising start, the film stretches for over two hours without actually getting anywhere. There are holes in the plot and the murder is relegated to the last 20 minutes. Worst of all, there is no humour!!! One cannot help thinking this is a bad attempt by a foreign director to recreate something which is quintessential British (unless he wants to prove Americans cannot do murder-mystery stories set in England -- like the U.S. film director we see in this movie)
Il grande Blek (1987)
A bittersweet portrait of a generation
I saw this movie only once and a long time ago, but I cannot but recommend it for its poetic and sensible description of the emotions and fears of a group of young Italians in the sixties. The details of the plot are now a bit blurred in my mind, but I remember feeling moved. And the soundtrack was great.
