Susie Searches (2022)
Wonderful story and amazing tone!
I loved this cheerfully dark detective story. The plotting subverted my expectations several times. The Director did an amazing job of balancing the dark true crime elements while being self aware and funny. The cast of characters were all likeable and quirky giving the events a quaint small town atmosphere. This film deserves more love, and I would love to see more from this Director. Seriously great work from everyone all around. The music and sound design were also incredibly tasteful, and I got both a cute coming of age story mixed with a creepy true crime narrative. The rotten tomatoes critics have unfairly rated this piece so low. The audience got it right. This was a fantastic little film. I haven't seen such good work from an indie in a while.

Horrible Work from Rob Letterman and Nicholas Stoller
Absolutely horrible adaptation of the original source material. The only watchable actor in the show is Justin Long who always delivers on performance, but he can't save this show's poor direction and writing. Casting mid twenties actors to play high school students may work for their bottom line, but it just doesn't play. They took an incredibly fun series of spooky books for elementary and middle school students and turned it into a middling, unwatchable high school drama. The original 90s show was light years ahead of this. There is no arc to any of the stories and feels like a montage of references to the book covers. No one wants to make anthologies anymore, but the structure of trying to connect what are essentially horror shorts into one continuous narrative feels like a huge mistake. The new fear street adaptation did a much better job. Majorly disappointed in what the show runners have done with this IP. Needs another reboot sadly.
