Battlefield Earth (2000)
One of the best S/F comedies since Spaceballs
WARNING *****THIS IS A S/F COMEDY***** If you try and take it seriously you have missed the point. It is a comic book transferred to the big screen. NO GORE, violence is implied and there are no car chases but a lot of dry humour and great puns are evident.
The movie is filled with bits from other previous S/F films presented in a comedic fashion. See how many you can spot.
Don't believe the low rating, that resulted in the general public expecting a "serious film" like a Star Wars or one of the many Star Treks. You know, a realistic S/F ;-)
Gosford Park (2001)
A fractal of post empire society
A very subtle examination of the symbiotic relationship between master and servant. This film demands you pay attention. If you do, it is a rewarding experience. If you don't or have attention deficit disorder, you will not like, understand or want it. I say, well done Altman. However ---possible spoiler here--- it must have been hard resisting the temptation to poison all of them!
The 13th Warrior (1999)
Beowulf
If you are aware of history (not the recent stuff of the last 1000 years), ancient literature (Beowulf), Norsemen Sagas and genetic memories you will like this film very much. If you are brain dead and only want a hack and slash, you won't. This is a great film of a very old story, retold by a master story teller. Beware the grendel's mother...
The Wars (1983)
The unedited film is a disturbing look at war in our society
This is one of the great anti war films. Although quite dry at times and requiring the viewer to actually think rather than just sit and be "entertained"; it does convey the early 1900's attitudes and mores rather well. With some great actors and a suitable sound track this film is more suited to the enthusiast rather than your everyday movie patron. Note, this is a film, not a movie.
