Maleficent (2014)
An empathy-jerking alternative story of Satan
Does anyone realize that this is an alternative (false) story for Satan's history with God? It is an excellent piece of fiction, and superbly produced and well-acted. But the embedded message is laden with blasphemy (or simply subtle mockery of the entity that some people know as God), and sympathy with the entity that some people know as Satan and empathy with Satan's claims about God.
Angelina Jolie represents Satan. I leave the rest for smart people to decipher and recognize.
By the way, these comments have nothing to do with a specific religion and the writer is not even a Christian. Even an atheist who heard the few stories told about what happened between God and Satan can still understand what I'm talking about, and in the end, all versions can be fiction to him or her; understanding that this is a "version of Satan's story", an alternative version to empathize with the entity, is enough.
The Other Guys (2010)
Awkward, weird, hilarious comedy to make you cringe!
This movie is worth watching for its unconventional, weird, almost new kind of comedy that can sometimes leave you confused, or cringing, but also laughing at the audacious impossibility of what you're watching. This is hardly realistic, generously exaggerated, and certainly not for everyone to be able to laugh at. But if my descriptions are making sense to you on an emotional or gut-feeling level, if you feel how a movie like that would be like, and you think you can laugh at it, then definitely watch it.
A niche kind of comedy that should make the compatible audience laugh with abandon, and probably keep remembering certain lines and scenes for a long time to come.
Vampires Suck (2010)
A shockingly underrated barrage of ridiculous hilarity
I'm giving this movie a 10 not because it is perfect, but because it is shockingly underrated and just like probably countless fanatic Twilight Saga fans gave it a 1 just out of spite, I'm giving it a 10 partially to spite them back. If it wasn't for this shockingly underrated reception, I would've given it a minimum of 8 anyway.
This movie seriously has scenes where there is continuous, non-stop hilarity for several minutes in a row, where many people should be laughing non-stop until their stomach muscles ache.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not even a Twilight Saga hater! On the contrary, I very much enjoy watching the Twilight Saga movies, but I'm not a rabid fan either. In order to enjoy this movie, just do not expect it to overwhelm you with witty lines of humor or cute humor, no, this movie is ridiculous humor and sarcasm all the way, with the odd witty part here and there. However, the sarcasm and ridiculousness is oozing with creativity.
I honestly haven't laughed at a comedy as much (and as hard) as I laughed at Vampires Suck. If sarcastic or ridiculous humor isn't your type, or you're a completely fanatic TS fan who reveres the series like it's something sacred, then simply move on and don't rate the movie. Otherwise, if you have the faintest interest in sarcasm, and if you can understand why it is OK to laugh at something completely ridiculous, then you simply must watch this movie! =)
Bitch Slap (2009)
Missed perfection due to incompatible gore & excessive violence
Alright, maybe perfection is a bit exaggerated for this movie, but seriously, we all know who would want to watch this: guys who appreciate jaw-dropping sex appeal, and girls who like girl power, and I don't think either of those would want their objectives mixed with gore or excessive, bloody violence.
To whoever made this movie or is thinking of producing a similar movie, next time just keep the gore & violence down a bit, or ideally no gore at all. Believe it or not, I would've been willing to give a 10 just for the movie's tough-bitch theme, and the genuinely charismatic and jaw-droppingly sexy ladies in this movie, who aren't doing a bad job at all in acting. However, the unnecessary exaggerated violence, the gore, which included torture, made me cringe and really distracted me from focusing on what I'm really there for: the sex appeal and tough-bitch stuff.
And by the way, to know what type of viewer I am, I don't watch such movies every day; I actually like reading for example and listen to classical music often, but we all know that men may succumb sometimes to the temptation of such trashy but too-sexy-to-resist entertainment. Hah! Just drop the gore and cringe-inducing violence next time, please.
Quarantine (2008)
Scariest movie I've ever seen in my life
This movie is a revolutionary piece of motion picture. I am beyond impressed by it for so many reasons, but above all the genius behind the whole thing! For something like this to be done without an expensive soundtrack and a non-cinematic camera, and still be done so artistically and skillfully, and still scare you to death, that alone gives it 10 stars. When something can be this simple and this genius at the same time.
Acting was worryingly convincing from everyone.
This movie really is the scariest movie I've ever seen in my life, and the scariest part of it is that it feels so real.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
Acceptable movie for rental
I was going to give it 7, but chose to raise this to 8 because this movie delivers a very important message to everyone in the world: that violence only creates more violence and destruction, and love, trust, and peace will always be our best options. Another equally important message being delivered is to take care of our planet and stop "killing" it.
I think the vast majority of the cast did a great job with the acting, and the directing and cinematography were also good or at least acceptable in my personal opinion as a movie watcher. All in all, I would give the movie at least seven stars, and wouldn't give it higher because there is something wrong with the movie. I can't quite put my hand on it, but I think it has to do with missing parts. It's like something's missing. Perhaps the boy's character needed a bit more time at the very beginning, some scenes needed to be justified more properly or convincingly...something like that.
Oh, not a lot of "wow" factor in the special effects, but the sfx already there was done very nicely. It's more of a movie that would make you think a bit, than thrill you. I would recommend it for renting.
The Cake Eaters (2007)
A beautiful "feel good" movie
It's been a while since I watched a movie and felt good for a while afterwards. Most movies nowadays make you feel romantic, awesome, thrilled, pumped up, etc etc, while you're watching it, inside the movie theatre or on your couch; but as soon as the movie ends, many leave you with a strange feeling of emptiness. "The Cake Eaters" was definitely a different experience for me. I can't say that I've learnt a lesson or a piece of wisdom from the movie, but I can definitely say that it left me with a good feeling after it ended. I definitely recommend it for rental and ownership, especially to watch with a loved one.
Incubus (2006)
Abysmal waste of film
First, I would like to emphasize that I'm actually a fairly easy guy to please when it comes to movies. I notice that a few movies on IMDb with bad ratings make me feel that watching them wasn't a complete waste of time. So keep that in mind.
Now with that said, Incubus happens to be the worst movie I've ever watched in my life, so far. It felt like it was a movie made to win some kind of 'Worst Movie Ever Made' award. What is truly abysmal about this movie is the script...it cannot be described by anything other than abysmal, and to give you examples: characters talking about 'dark' and 'darkness' when the whole place is obviously very well lit (I appreciate this could be a lighting problem, but if for a technical reason the lighting couldn't be sorted, someone should have changed the script accordingly to fit the budget / circumstances / status quo), a character shouting in fear 'Please don't hurt me...stay away from me!' then immediately killing himself with a tool he could've used to defend himself for instance, and countless instances of events that don't make sense and comments & exclamations that literally make you go like, 'Where did THAT come from?' or 'What does this have to do with what you just said?' After script taking the icing of the cake, I can easily say directing was bad. After all, it really falls down to the leader behind any product or project to ensure quality. If a movie is that abysmal, it tells you something about the director. Finally, acting was also corny & bad no less than 80% of the time, save for the 2 cast members with the smallest roles and perhaps the black guy. But I'm sure the script & directing had major roles in producing such awful performance.
I picked this movie only because I was interested in seeing the work of a specific cast member, nothing more. But it bordered on painful to try & keep watching the movie to the end so I don't miss any scenes where that cast member appears.
The idea behind the movie or the main plot of the story is perhaps the only element of the movie that is more positive than negative. And you can know the main idea from reading the summary anyway.
Avoid wasting your time on this movie unless you have a similar 'research' interest.
