Asteroid City (2023)

He has out-Wes-Anderson himself
12 June 2023
Wes Anderson has always been a favorite director of mine. I have seen all his movies - but for me, the magic is gone.

I feel like The Grand Budapest Hotel was his masterpiece. Where every aspect that makes his films special was at its peak. The characters, the cast, the sets and, of course, the visuals were up to an 11. His craft was perfected - and it's one of my top 5 films of all time.

When I saw Isle of Dogs, I started to feel full. I felt like I had seen Wes's style a bit too much. And now this.

I feel that Asteroid City is pretty bland. The visuals are fantastic - but we've seen this all before. Instead of a compelling lead who has an interesting problem to solve - we get several bland characters who are quirky, and that's it. The acting is great though. But it's not that funny nor intriguing.

We were eight friends who saw this film together. Every one of us was pretty bored after a while. One of us really liked it though - but she had only seen 50% of a Wes Anderson film before. The rest of us felt... full.

Bring back the 90 minute movie
24 February 2023
It seems Netflix are determined to releasing new weekly movies that are mediocre and too long. This easily, just like other Netflix-films like the recent Jason Mamoa films Slumberland and Sweet Girl or the very recent Your place or mine, could have been 90 minutes. I'm confident I would have enjoyed this film much more if it was shorter - now I just feel numb.

Sometimes a light comedy can be just what I crave. It can have medium reviews but in a certain mood, a "medium" film can be perfect. But for two hours? Landons previous films in the Happy Death Day-franchise + Freaky are much more succesful in being enjoyable.

One of the best original songs in years
6 January 2023
I'm so bummed that it's unlikely that LCD Soundsystem will be Oscar nominated for their amazing end credits song New Body Rhumba. I hate it when an original songs only appears in the credits, like Taylor Swifts song Carolina from Where the crawdads sings, and then they use that to promote the film. But this? An absolutely amazing scene that made me smile til it hurt. Perfect ending!

The rest of the film? Before I saw it, i thought it looked tailor made for me. Marriage Story is one of my favorite films, and I love the cast. The first half of the trailer was amazing (I never see the second half of a trailer if I already know I'm going to see it, I want to go in fresh). The result was, however, not for me. I was completely zoned out in the third act. I wasn't expecting a straight forward disaster film - but I certainly didn't expect this.

Needs its own Baby Yoda
29 December 2021
...well not exactly but Mando had a clear goal and high stakes early - to keep Grogu safe. And Baby Yoda in episode 1 was a wonderful surprice. After this first episode I'm not pulled in.

Love triangles... again
29 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The show keeps insisting on love triangles. Last season we had 3-4 similar storylines and one of them (Meave, Otid and Isaac) just keeps going.

After last season I was excited to see an actual relationship between Adam and Eric but here we go again.. gets repetitive.

We stayed up all night for this??
27 April 2021
Love the Oscars, and as usual we stayed up all night (in Sweden the pre-show began 12:30 am and the main show finished at 5:20 am). It's always worth it, even though I have to take some time off work. But for this?? A conference for industry people. So many dull, lifeless choises. No music, no humor, no clips or even images. I don't care how 10 people I've never heard of discover cinema - I want to see the work they're being celebrated for.

How I would have fixed it
11 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
At most 100 minute screen time. First 50 minutes is leading up to the prom, then the fake prom, then they head over to the real prom. First it's sad and uncomfortable, then lessons are learned, people come to new understandings and then a joyful ending. The hour between the fake prom and the inclusive prom is too damn long with forgetable music

Too many chances
27 November 2020
Ben Falcone has gotten too many chances. Melissa McCarthy used to be one of my favorite comedy actresses. But this is the last drop. Spending a nice friday on this film when nobody tried their best making it. Nobody

Paris produced this
18 September 2020
The documentary is unbiased since Paris is a producer. It seems she's presenting herself in a light she prefers, and not in an honest way. However, the Coachella scene is amazing, so damn awesome she gave cameras access to such a emotional moment. Best scene in a documentary I've seen for a long time

Three too similar storylines
9 March 2020
Otis, Meave and Ola Eric, Adam and Rahim Jean, Jakob and Remi

Three storylines about choosing between two love interests in the same season. Kinda lazy, especially since Otis and Ola logically should have broke up as soon as their parents became a couple. Jean and Jakob had chemistry and made sense, Ola and Otis had been on like one date

Impossible task
25 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Zach Villa said he got the script 2 weeks before the episode AIRED. WHY do they build up for a festival when they obviously don't have the time to film it? No climax, no age make up on Emma Roberts (playing at least 50-years old).. just like the Asylum the finale is mostly just talking + more new characters/storylines that we're not invested in.

Wa-a-y too man characters
5 November 2019
You simply can't emotionally connect to so many People. Dunkirk did it best when narrowing it down and letting us follow their journey. Instead we're supposed to care about Ed Skreins one note character who reminds me so much of Tommy Wiseau it's hilarious

I just love this show so much
31 October 2019
Hilarious set ups for jokes, laughed so muched while FEELING THINGS. Also spot on representation of influencer culture + great voice work. The premise could have gotten old half way through but it worked to the end. I'm so happy the show is ending on such a high note.

Again??
18 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Third season of "if you die here you stay here". Second season in a row with satan. I've felt that the show has gotten to repetitive for a while and therefore I was excited for this season for taking a new route. But even with a fresh setting it's the same as usual. I will finish this season but this will probably be the last season I watch

Better than the novel...
9 October 2019
...but still pretty boring and repetetive. So glad they toned down the annoying limericks from the novel while expanding (A LOT) from the source material. But the third act had me pretty checked out.

Stop insisting on 13 episodes a season
17 September 2019
Season 3 could have been pretty good if it was 8 episodes, without even removing any storylines. I will not bother with season 4 if the pacing doesn't get better.

5 minutes of excitement doesn't make up for 45 dull minutes. However, happy to see actual plot progression

Hard to care for any character
3 August 2019
Sometimes the characters have reasonable motivations and valid points - but most of the time all the characters are just unlikeable. Solid acting from the three leads makes the first act enjoyable but after that it's hard to care for any character
