Napoleon (Supposedly.)

A story telling how Napoleon may have perhaps risen to power.

As a retired History teacher I wasn't keen to watch it, but a wet Saturday evening in Bristol, what better to do than go and watch a film.

2 hours and 40ish minutes of absolute drivel, the historical inaccuracies were laughable, I won't even get into them, needless to say, many of the events we were shown, simply did not happen that way.

Napoleon himself, who would possibly have taken orders from this man, or indeed have turned their backs on their head of state, and fought for, what an uninspiring presentation, I didn't think Phoenix was the right choice for the part, a great actor though he is.

Definitely not tonight Josephine.

As a child I grew up absolutely loving Gene Wilder in the role, I didn't care for Johnny Depp, that film was just too weird, along comes Chalamet, pretty good in the part, I just wasn't crazy about the film.

I felt as though I was watching a musical somewhere in The West End, lots of musical numbers, and a plot which was there, but more so for the sake of it.

1971's film presents us with a world of magic, what child (or adult for that matter) wouldn't have wanted to get into that factory, and didn't end up singing those songs, sadly there's none of that here. It's very well made, it's well acted, all that's missing is the magic.

I know I shouldn't be comparing it to the past, it's better than the Depp movie, but not a patch on Wilder's.

The Giggle

Warning: Spoilers
Easily this was the best of the three specials, efforts were made to fuse old elements of the show with some more recent aspects.

Scary moments, Donna and the dolls gave me shudders, that was a terrific moment, as was the poor man made to dance.

NPS genius, nothing else to say.

BL finally gets an episode where she isn't made to scream.

Disney have sneaked in a new device to allow for the return of Mr Tennant, presenting him as what, the fall back option? He's generally seen as the fall back option, but does that not detract from Ncuti Gatwa's moment in the sun?

Let's just hope Disney remember where this show came from and how it started, my plea, don't trample on the origins of this once great show.

Why was he in his pants? Imagine if Jodie had appeared in her bra?

A Haunting in Venice

I'm pleased the title was changed, as I have just finished reading Halloween Party, and I can see little of it, people always seem to think they know better than Agatha Christie, they don't.

It verges on horror, which is unusual for a Poirot, it moved by at quite a pace, it was far from boring, had they slowed things down just a little, the story could perhaps have been a little better crafted, it came across as somewhat rushed.

Great cinematography, this film is one of the best looking big budget movies I have seen this year.

I enjoyed the solution, the best bit of any mystery is the final reveal.

KB gave us his most convincing Poirot to date, and the creature that had previously inhabited his top lip, has perhaps gone into hibernation, this reduced moustache was easier to accept.

Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder (2023)

Wild Blue Yonder

Fresh after battling a giant Furby, The Doctor and Donna are back!

I was a little concerned about this after being somewhat miffed by the generally poor Star Beast, but Wild Blue Yonder signals something of a turnaround.

I don't think it was perfect, and I am perplexed by some of the reviews giving this 9's and 10's, it's not Midnight, despite wanting to be.

Davies has gone back to basics, his intention was clearly to scare the pants off us, he's largely succeeded, there were some very creepy moments, I've been a little critical of Catherine in the past, but when she needed to switch up to creepy, she nailed it.

I wonder what people are thinking of the new music, it's good, will it stay for Ncuti?

Slightly cartoonish as times, consider Midnight, that worked so well, because the horror was implied, we used our imaginations to fill in the blanks, this would have worked brilliantly were it not for the Circus arms and legs, but who knows maybe they're part of The Toymaker's Plan.
