2012 (2009)
Entertaining
I didn't go into the theater expecting an intelligent or artistic film. I went in expecting Hollywood clichés. And I got them. What I hadn't expected was the way the CGI gripped me. This film has the best CGI I've ever come across. All in all it was a pretty intense experience, (almost) all 2h 45min of it. Of course, towards the end you know how it'll wind up and are really just waiting for them to get it over with. Too many emotional scenes where, amidst general destruction, the "characters" find time to pause and exchange sobbing and heart-felt banalities to each other. Then again, it is an American film, even if the director is German. My biggest GRIPE is with the fact that the studio (like many other studios) finds the need to post fake reviews on IMDb praising the director, the "character development" and so on. Come on guys. If you're going to spread propaganda, do it with style.
Mini's First Time (2006)
Looks great, sounds great, superficial characters and no real plot.
This movie looks good. As slick as a commercial. The language and dialogue is no-nonsense and cool. It has good actors and good acting. BUT! For a plot to work, it must grasp us. We must have a character trying to obtain something, and overcoming challenges to obtain it.
But in this movie, the main character wants one thing only: to try new and daring things. So she decides to kill her mother. Now, if she had trouble doing this, things would get interesting. Then her objective of "trying new and daring things" would be challenged. But, unfortunately, she has no trouble whatsoever. She kills her mother just like that.
In the second part of the movie, you could say that her objective is "getting away with murder". Here she actually experiences some trouble. A police detective is a little too curious about the mother's "suicide".
But from her own gloating and care-free narrative and from the opening scenes, we're already pretty sure she'll get away with it. So why should we care?
What makes us care even less is that most of the characters are really unappealing (but gentle on the eyes) and very two-dimensional.
All in all, a great lesson in how NOT to make a movie, but to its credit, it looks good, and I liked the score.
I Am Legend (2007)
Things that would improve "I Am Legend"
I'm going to list improvements that could be made to this movie. WARNING: SPOILER START 1.If the British scientist(Ahhh, us evil Brits) in the opening sequence had said "copper" instead of cop. A British person would do this. 2. If the same scientist had been less confident in her claim of having cured cancer. Real scientists, when interviewed, are usually very careful with what they say. 3. If we had seen Robert Neville's family die, before seeing Robert Neville alone in New York. This way, the suspense would be intact. 4. If we got some explanation why Neville's wife, when scanned for the virus, first tested positive, then, when scanned again, negative. Also, it would be cool to know why the quarantine guards accepted this? Seems there's a 50/50 chance she's infected, that's some risk to take letting her through? 5. If Robert Neville was a little less resourceful. On a typical day, he manages to get up, work out, hunt deer, harvest vegetables, transmit his call for help "on all AM frequencies", return his DVDs and get out new ones, conduct his lab experiments, work on his drive and finally, he feeds and washes his dog. For some reason, at the end of the day, he goes to sleep in his bathtub. 6. If the ending was rewritten. For some reason, we get this holier-than-thou crap about genetic engineering being a sin, and then Anna starts on about how God wanted them to meet. She also claims that He has told her about a surviving colony of people in the mountains. Also, who has ever heard of a zombie flick with a happy ending? 7.If Anna had heard of Bob Marley. Like everyone else on this planet. The movie cliché, where Neville looks incredulous, and subsequently introduces her to the music, would have worked better with some lesser known artist. For God's sake. A woman like Anna, in her late twenties to early thirties KNOWS who Bob Marley is. And so did we, so thanks a million for telling us, Robert Neville. SPOILER END If all these things were improved, you might end up with a descent movie.
Truands (2007)
French genius
IMHO this is one of the best and most hardcore gangster flicks out there.
It's grisly, sure, but also produced in a very realistic way, and the characters are extreme, most of them are utter nuts.
It has french humor, sex, drugs and violence in abundance.
But it also has an impressive array of characters and quite a complex story line.
In short, prepare for a hell of a ride.
I rank this one a masterpiece.
Check it out!
