College Hill: Celebrity Edition (2022)
Big Freedia
I decided to watch this on a whim on Netflix. It was entertaining and much better than expected (exception: Ray J) but Big Freedia stole the show for me. Omgosh so in love with her personality - what a beautiful, kind, honest and loving person she is! How you live your life is nobody's business but let me tell you I would take a world full of Big Freedia's over the ugliness among the general population.
I loved to see what appeared to be true growth for the celeb participants. I am not a reality TV watcher, TikTok person or influencer influenced - so most of these folks I'd never heard of. It was very good; I like that most of them learned something new as far as education, and definitely learned something about themselves.
Big Freedia though - yes. A person I'd want to be friends with, who would bring goodness and light.
Devil in Ohio (2022)
Horrible
I watched the whole thing. Therefore, I'm doing a service, trying to spare you from wasting 4+ hours of your life. This is awful.
First things first - a teen from a satanic cult. You're letting her not only come in, but stay in your family? The answer is no. Hell no, heavens no, earth no.
It's horrible ya'll. Do better Netflix. I can't even begin on how bad Emily Deschanel is in this. Girl I hope something better comes along for you in the future.
You'll probably watch it anyway but do T say you weren't warned. I'm only giving it two stars because I loved the little sister who just did not belong in this. She was a joy. Only saving grace.
The Bear: Braciole (2022)
KBL and "Can I talk to you in the kitchen about JAW please?"
First, haven't written a review since iMDB got rid of the message boards. Therefore, The Bear is something special..cuz written review.
Re: S1E8: Soooo... Mikey knew Carmy would make it all right once he figures out 28oz San Marzano's were the key? Resealed cans or what? And he planned this because... why? Maybe that'll be answered in the next season. There better be a next season. (sidebar: in Italian cooking as far as canned tomatoes go, San Marzano's really are the key) Outside of this questionable plot point, such a great season! That said...
Uhhhh...Can I talk to you in the kitchen about Jeremy Allen White? (Kudos if you get the reference). My gosh did I love me some Lip in Shameless. Chicago sure does look good on him. He and costar Ayo Edebiri lead an amazing ensemble. I watched because Jeremy Allen White really is THAT good. And The Bear proves it. It felt real. The kind of story where you hold out hope that somewhere, this kind of 'against-all-odds' is happening in real time. There is something to be said about love expressed through cooking. Any person who truly loves cooking knows this. Personally I always say love is my secret ingredient, what makes my food tastes the way it does. I think anyone who has a passion for it would agree.
The show is so well done. You care about these folks from the get go and Jeremy Allen White leads the way. He's the real deal.
The Bear is worth your time.
Night Teeth (2021)
Enjoyable pass of time
This isn't winning any awards but it's an enjoyable watch. The most unrealistic part of the movie: no traffic at all anywhere in LA 😂
Anyway, cool take on vampires, loved the cameos and I enjoyed the lead actor a lot. Don't regret the watch at all, it was entertaining.
Hart of Dixie (2011)
Great lighthearted fun and hijinks
This pandemic has us DEEP into the Netflix diaries. Decided to watch this and really, really enjoyed it. Frankly I'd love to live in a community so diverse, where people were for the most part, extremely kind to each other and an exciting community event every week it seems!
Jaime King excels as Lemon Breeland, and Kaitlyn Black subtlety steals the show as AnnaBeth Nash. All the characters are great... truth be told Zoe Hart is the least likable.
Anyway, definitely light and fun. A very well developed ensemble cast - you really love the townspeople!
And the costume design is outstanding. So so so many beautiful dresses.
P-Valley (2020)
Very well done
This isn't a show I'd normally watch. I'm mixed black/white 45yo educated woman who grew up in Compton, CA with parents who had a great relationship until death did them part, attended private schools. I have one sister, a year and a half younger than me. Our lives went down very different paths. I give my background to assist in understanding my review.
This show is about the lives of people (who *happen* to be of color), in a small, impoverished town in the very Deep South. There is not a lot of choice, and privilege is not something POC experience. So you work with what you have in the hopes of finding a better life. That's the story here - the characters in this show are real, doing what they have to, to find better. And in this life, there are more challenges than usual. They care for one another, Uncle Clifford and Diamond in particular. It was great to see these characters care for, rather than exploit, these women.
And these women are dealing with issues I feel very lucky not to have faced. It's about more than strippers - it's the lives of people who happen to work in the industry, told from a very empathetic point of view. It's humanizing and very well done. A few months ago I watched an interview with the creator/director on why/what her vision was for the show. Hats off. Not to mention the athleticism of these women. I mean good grief. I have so much respect - the scences where they are performing and it's the sounds of their breathing, showing just how difficult what they're doing is..wow.
It wasn't a planned watch, but I was hooked, invested in these very real, very human characters. Too much judgement in some of these reviews here. I thought it was great, and very informative. Not for kids. If you can watch with an open mind, you might learn something.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Lady Gaga - WOW
This movie is worth the watch for her performance alone. I've never seen previous versions of ASIB - but I feel confident saying she makes the role her own. There was one point in the film where I thought to myself "Wow, she is blowing this out of the water".
Her voice can move you tears, so big and so raw - and her acting follows suit. Well worth the watch!
Timeless: Chinatown (2018)
Best show on NETWORK TV
Timeless ..wow. First episode I thought "what? A historian? A geek? A soldier?" But it WORKS. Traveling back to some of the most significant events in history, it all works.
The aliases, "steal a car, find some clothes", the interpersonal relationships, the humor, the character development. It's a great show! And two seasons in it hasn't lost what makes it work.
Can't wait for S3!!!
The Baytown Outlaws (2012)
Unexpectedly Unexpected!
This just happened to come on Showtime while I was doing something around the house - the beginning caught my attention...and then I was sucked in. Agreed, EL and BBT have limited roles ...and really, that's fine. Because its the Oodie brothers that steal the show. Literally.
They're on a mission (cash incentive of course) to retrieve EL's godson from her crazy, criminal murderous ex-hubby (BBT). What ensues is entertaining, funny and heart- warming with a little bit of Speak n Spell thrown in. You'll find yourself rooting for the Oodie brothers.
SO entertaining..I loved it. And it's got a pretty good soundtrack to boot!
Definitely worth the watch!
Back in the Game (2013)
WORST "family" comedy EVER
This is the most disgusting piece of garbage I've seen in years. So much so, that I booted up my computer at 9pm to write this review. First - nestled between to established family comedies, this comes out of nowhere with vulgar and crass "humor".
There is SO MUCH inappropriate sexual innuendo in this show - and it's overt - all set amongst a group of kids. The adults are rude, angry and mean. Every single interaction between the female lead and the male coaches revolves around sexual undertones.
James Caan's character is ridiculous. WORST SHOW EVER. EVER!! Don't even think about letting kids watch this POS.
50 First Dates (2004)
I love this movie.
Adam Sandler is definitely hit or miss...funny, but the same old funny over and over...so not funny much anymore.
But this movie - I love it. Drew Barrymore is adorable, real and convincing in her role...she brings the movie to life.
The supporting actors are great too...
Beautiful setting...
And Sean Astin's role as her brother is awesome!
If you're looking for an enjoyable, heart-warming comedy/love story, you should check it out. And hey, just like Lucy, if you don't like it move on tomorrow.
It's one of those I'll watch anytime it's on!
