Great Holmes, fun series, but CSI light
15 March 2003
I enjoyed this series on DVD, but was disappointed on how little crime scene investigation took place. I've only seen Ep 7-8. In both cases, the stories unfolded on their own through exposition to Holmes; there was very little sleuthing. They were not so much detective stories as weird/bizzarre/quirky stories. Is this how the actual stories were? If anything, watching these has made want to read the books and short stories.

Bat Masterson (1958–1961)
Mat Basterson

If you like genre bending shows like "Cop Rock," musicals like "Guys and Dolls," your favorite character on Star Trek is Neelix, your favorite reality show is the Bachelor/Bachelloret, you think PeeWee Herman is a genius, or you wish Clint Eastwood would do more movies like Bridges of Madison County, you'll probably like this "Western." Everything Western fans love about Westerns is unintentionally mawked. The only thing missing is a sidekick/butler named Quesso dressed in a bunny suit riding a three legged donkey.

Aptly titled

If you are searching for a reason to live, don't watch this movie. If someone tries to lure you into watching this movie by suggesting that you have to have a certain taste to enjoy it, never listen to this person again. In fact, this person may be a vampire. This person has suffered through this film and now wants you to suffer. Run! And don't look back. Every attempt at a joke, will drain the life blood out of your wretched soul. This movie is not for everybody. If you like mindless humor, you'll love this movie. Rent it today!

What you see is what you get!

If you hear anything bad about this documentary, stop listening. If you don't smile while watching the concert footage, you don't love rock 'n' roll. Betty is a complicated, intelligent, real human being with all the frailties that includes...but he is a generous showman who personifies rock music. If there was any doubt who the father of rock 'n' roll was, with all due respect to the King, there is none after watching this absorbing, if incomplete, biopic about Chuck Berry. Don't rent it - buy it. Today.

The Rock's Conan
19 May 2002
While watching this nonstop action film, starring world famous wrestler The Rock, one can't help but think of the parallels to Arnold Swarzenegger as Conan. The Rock is a capable, charismatic leading man for this genre. Like Arnold, though, he is at his weakest when speaking lines of dialogue of more than five words at a time. As for the movie, the plot is paper thin. It's little more than an excuse for nonstop fighting, an occasional joke, and beautiful women, aka Baywatch. Although surprisingly violent, it cuts away from what would be a plethora of gore and a flood of blood if the movie strived for any realism at all, which much like the World Wrestling Federation, it doesn't. Rock has the stuff to be the next action superstar, but he's going to have to do two things first. He needs to find a vehicle that will make his cartoony persona more dark, much the same way Arnold was able to add a dark edge in Terminator. Plus, how can you take anyone seriously that calls himself The Rock - he needs to find a leading actor type name and fast. Or he will be stuck between a rock and hard place finding movies beyond The Scorpion King 1 through 100. Overall, I enjoyed this movie, despite its lack of a plot or spectacular special effects, for what it was, which speaks volumes for the Rock's ability to carry a film. However, my 11 year old daughter was bored.

Must See For Would-Be Writers
19 May 2002
If you are a wannabe writer, a writer or simply a fan of movie making or the art of writing, this film is a must see. It's not a perfect film. One wonders at times whether some of the rare serious moments in the movie, or the sugary sweet romance, were poorly written on purpose - but it doesn't matter because it all fits together wonderfully with the parody of bad movie writing, which is what this movie is about. Don't watch this film with anyone who is uncomfortable with unconventional movies, or who is an impatient nitpicker - they won't be happy. The biggest mistake in making this movie was probably the title, which is too misleading and not punchy enough for this genre. Interestingly, Orsen Wells wanted to direct this film but didn't get the job. It would have become a classic under his direction, but as it is now, it's just a silly, lighthearted (mostly), fun, risque, self-indulgent, and even didactic, film about the movie business.
