Cade's County (1971)
A show with potential, but no luck.
A very interesting western drama from 1971-1972. A memorable theme by Henry Mancini, and a solid performance by Glenn Ford. But bad luck dogged the show, an accident involving Ford's Jeep injured stunt-men and if memory serves me,fatally injured one of the stunt-men.In the later episodes, Glenn Ford drove a black Chrysler Newport; and very little was seen of the Jeep, except for the opening montage. The show was canceled after 24 episodes;then a strange thing happened.Reruns of the canceled show found an audience, and shot to the top five in the Nielsen's. An attempt to bring the show back failed because Glenn Ford had committed to other projects. A pity, the show had potential.
Boudica (2003)
A fair history, boring film.
Any film that attempts to educate should be commended. But this film is strange, because the first half is first class, but the second half seems rushed; and should have been twenty minutes longer. Perhaps a "Director's Cut" will restore footage from the cutting room floor; and we can see the film in it's entirety. One can hope!
Vercingétorix (2001)
A noble project, poorly executed.
This movie according to the producer/star is a tribute to the Celtic leader who led the revolt against Julius Caesar in ancient Gaul(France). The revolt ended in the battle of Alesia, where Caesar's fifty thousand legionaires defeated two Celtic armies numbering at least one hundred sixty thousand warriors. The movie does a poor job of explaining the events, and only if the viewer is familiar with the events and characters does the story make sense. The story needs to be told, but this not the movie it should be. But credit should be given to any filmmaker who aspires to educate as well as entertain the viewer.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
A formula movie, but it is a billion dollar formula.
George Lucas has used the last quarter century to perfect the formula for the most successful franchise in film history. All the elements are present in just the right amounts to give a good two and a half hour diversion that lives up to past "Star Wars" installments. The performances are competent and adequate for the genre, but the villain turn delivered by eighty year old Christopher Lee was showy and over the top and very fun to watch. The music by old pro John Williams was familiar and contributed to the sense of sitting down with an old friend and covering familiar territory. In total a good movie, not a great movie; but one that delivers everything promised.
