Violent Is the Word for Curly (1938)
censorship rears it's ugly head
this always was one of my favorite movies. but curly's own piece was cut from the movie. the original name for this movie was, "The Boys go to College." so what happened? since most readers here are YOUNG. they missed out on the original cut of this. Spoiler: student body introductions started with Larry. after Larry was introduced he was asked a question and responded with a blank stare. Moe stepped in and got the swinging the alphabet after he was introduced. this was cut to the "Curly is a dope." then Curly was introduced and he started the student body and as he was he had the ladies repeat after him. quote; "if at first you don't succeed, keep on $******* till you do $ucceed." I may get banned from here telling the truth. Curly had the girls repeat this several times and their charming voices did it just fine. so many later copies I have seen have Curly finishing up the alphabet song by himself.....(current title) I believe he was violent because he may have done the boys go to college one, on the fly so to speak. and it was yanked/pulled and he was forced to remake. so many of their films had little hints, like the fish salesmen wagon had fish by 'Hook, Line and Sinker." it would be nice to see the original again but I might be dreamin' for sure. it was out before tapes and DVDs. otherwise it would get 10 out of 10 stars....
2012: Doomsday (2008)
Christians may like it, non Christians will probably hate it.
it starts off heavily religious. then blends in, is this what god wanted me to do? what does god want of me? as descriptions of worldly disasters are about to happen. the earth stopping it's rotation and the oceans flooding over the lands west of any where. people evacuating to the east. suddenly the earth stops rotating and folks disappear due to the rapture. the Christians think this way. but in reality if and when the earth may stop and gravity goes to zero what will happen is anybody not tied to something firmly attached to the earth will float off into space.....then you die, or as Christians believe good is taking you home.....your choice. as for the ending a fatherless baby being born as a golden cross is placed in a Mayan pyramid to start the new calendar time. all there become gods messengers to those left.
I have not seen the newly released 2012.....I'll wait until it comes to TV as reports I have heard described it as cheesy.....almost boring.
this movie 2012 doomsday may be about equal to 2012 of 2009 when all is said and done, loved by some hated by others.
I would say it did appear to be a, "very low budget movie." I'm just not sure I would ever care to watch it again.
The Mystic Warrior (1984)
this movie was politically challenged
I enjoyed this, no I was glued to the screen. this was what was quoted at answers dot com. the original was to be 10 hours. indians may not be bl**k but some discrimination may have CANNED this. hope this explains why you will not see it soon....if ever.
The five-hour miniseries The Mystic Warrior began life in 1979 when producer David L. Wolper announced plans for a ten-hour adaptation of Hanta Yo, an epic historical novel by Ruth Beebe Hill. Using as her main source a full-blooded Sioux named Chunksa Yuha, Hill fashioned what amounted to a Native American version of Roots, chronicling the history of the Matho tribe of the Ogala Dakota Sioux. Although Hill was briefly the darling of the literary cognoscenti, her book was ultimately attacked and discredited by a veritable army of Indian historians, teachers, and activists, who accused her of distorting and falsifying truths in order to promote her own (and Yuha's) sociopolitical agenda. Suddenly, all of the Native American support that had been promised to the miniseries version of Hanta Yo evaporated; even the filming location had to be changed from New Mexico to Thousand Oaks, CA, so as not to offend the Indian tribes in the former state. When the project finally aired on May 20 through 21, 1984, its running time (and budget) had been cut in half, and the producer was obliged to qualify the credits by noting that the teleplay was based partially on Hill's book, but mostly on "other sources." Judging by the results, those sources would seem to have been such Hollywood fictional films as Cheyenne Autumn and A Man Called Horse. Set in the years 1802 to 1808, the finished film focused on a young brave named Ahbleza (Robert Beltran), the son of a Matho chief. Blessed with supernatural visionary powers by the ancient Mahto seer Wanagi (Ron Soble), Ahbleza set about to save his people from the devastations of the future, among them the invasion of the white man. After a lengthy, truth-seeking odyssey fraught with tragedy and sacrifice, Ahbleza assumed his rightful place as spiritual leader of his tribe. Mystic Warrior was entertaining enough, but failed to draw viewers away from such formidable competition as The Jeffersons, Alice, and One Day at a Time. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
note I would watch this again, bluray buy it. I would really like to see the original 10 hour version though on bluray.
The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005)
greatest game-one of the greatest movies made
if you watch this at home on DVD or Bluray! be sure you have great sound system. the musical score through this is what moves you through the movie. I have watched the movie several times and thought it was great but after just up-grading my home theater sound system, what a difference. I will be watching this movie many, many more times.
if you do not have a great sound system. find a friend who does and watch it there.
also watch the extra stories and behind the scenes extras that come with it (the BR or DVD.) the interview of Quimet in the 1960's talks about his scholarship fund...but for those times just boys got it. today I hope some of it goes to girls.......
Dirty Dancing (1987)
almost like life in the 60's
I believe I read many of the 34 pages of comments. one mentioned "Juicy Brucy" the DJ. well I use to listen to him then.....AM radio at late night DX carried to my state. I was one who during those years was kicked out of very many dances that I went to, for the type of close dancing the movie portrayed, mostly catholic school dances. I never dated the girl I danced with but we had a lot of fun.
getting to the resorts: they were very popular back then. mostly rich folks used them. as the resort owner complains near the end of the movie how jet travel is changing all that, did happen. I like much of the music and the dancing. it will always be in my library. summer time was a time for kids to get jobs like those resorts....rich folks had no trouble getting their kids into one.....money talks.
I rated this 10 out of 10. as I feel it does portray the early 60's to some extent. acting I thought was very good for the story given them.
I wish the best for Patrick!!!
Oil Storm (2005)
this movie should have been re-released in June of 2007/hope it is in 2008
I watched this movie several times from a home recorded DVD I made on it's last showing. It looked to be a unbelievable account of a oil shortage from about 2 years in the future and looking back to what started it. The movie was too accurate of what really did happen except for the Houston ship incident.
New Orleans has been on edge with hurricanes for years being below sea level. It was a incident in itself....a catastrophe just waiting to happen. It was worse in real life. The movie shows New Orleans recovered.
The amazing item of high gasoline prices hitting $8.00+ did happen and a continuation of real high oil prices did happen but like in the movie China has out bid the US for oil else where. The US was purchasing all of Venezuela's oil, today China gets 1/2. China has 2.02 trillion of US dollars and at this time could out bid the US anywhere. This part did come true!
I used this movie studying it for a way to invest. As Katrina was intensifying I found a good investment...before it hit. Did good (450+% as of today)!
Although the reason oil is so high (crude going to above $100) is in no relation to any shortage, it is due to a constantly devaluing of the US dollar. the US is really going into bankruptcy causing the dollar to loose respect and worth. Any real oil shortage will cause it to go higher.....I see gold at $3000 and oil at $300/barrel with in a few years as like in the movie showing the war we fight for oil. Heaven forbid if oil is really in short supply, since the population and consumption grows daily. The dollar cost maybe extremely higher.
This is not to bash the current regime but all politicians for not pushing other things like solar and ELECTRIC CARS. As for New Orleans what a way to get the poor out...now it is prime for eminent domain and big companies to develop it to a resort.
This would be good viewing for the next CAT-5 hurricane if you are a investor.
