Yet a new one, yet the same
6 October 2004
I promise, this is the last time I give Allen a chance, ever. I always think "This new one can't be that bad", but it seems he can't stop being so much himself with his pathetic hysterical illnesses taking over any movie he makes. Maybe the only exception was "Anything else" and that was thanks to Jason Biggs who is funny just by looking at him. Allen is too old to get middle-aged women as romantic couples also, he is going to be 70 soon and he looks like he was 80!! He would probably be better taking grandpa roles more than the leading man... I didn't even smile during the entire movie. The truth is, I even fast forward some parts. When he was younger I remember seeing some great movies he made, but now, by the end of his career, probably he is making movies (writing, directing and editing) just like the character in this one : in complete blindness.

Very avant garde for the time

I've recently seen this movie again after at least 15 years. The first time it scared me a lot, probably for the weird look in Ivy's eyes and the screaming scenes...

Keep in mind that reincarnation was not a very common subject at the time, and I took it just as many other people, as a poor Exorcist copy. Now, knowing a lot more on the subject, I think it was not too bad given the time it was filmed. The hipnotic regression scene is well done, even though the ending probably can't happen in real life after a regression to a past life.

It was great also watching a young Anthony Hopkins in such role. As always, he convinces you of what he is feeling, and the movie, not being excellent, keeps you interested.

I gave it a 6, considering the good original screenplay (for 1977), and the performances of Anthony Hopkins and Marsha Mason. I must say she seems a little "too dramatic", but that was her style.

If you like Anthony Hopkins and you want to watch a good old thriller, you must see "Magic" too.

Nowhere (2002)
A horror subject made light
23 August 2004
First, it is not a Comedy. Not at all. Not because of the subject, not because of the acting.

It's clear that the country in the movie is Chile (even the flag is similar) during the years of Pinochet dictatorship and murders. The movie tries to make look the killers not so bad and the prisoners in better conditions they really were at the time. No tortures, no abuses, no women prisoners. Their relationship seems too friendly to be real.

On the subject, the movie "Missing" shows a different view, but at least, more real. If you want to know more about that period in our history, search for the The Rettig Report, which states the thousands of disappearing and atrocities that took place those days.

Anyway, the movie is not too bad, maybe a little slow. Probably the fact that is both English and Spanish spoken, stopped it from more exposure. Keitel is not brilliant, far as usual, but it's remarkable that he wanted to participate in this project. (probably a very low budget movie). Too much emphasis on the potato cooking... while in the reality, those guys were probably more worried about being killed in cold blood than potato recipes. Good caricature of the "general", that one made me smile. But that doesn't make it qualify for a comedy.

Van Helsing (2004)

A HUGH disappointment
24 May 2004
Been waiting for its release for months. Love vampires and old classic horror stories, but this seems to be the worst I've seen. EVER.

Extremely long, poorly structured characters, even a Shreck alike monster with CGI effects that had been better seen in other movies before. Beckinsale's character resembles too much her Selene's Underworld. Even the story is amazingly alike ! A lousy Matrix-Underworld-XMen mix. Just add vampires... And you'll get this boring, long, bad movie.

Don't waste your time. If you want to see it anyway, wait for the DVD release and watch it comfortably at home, while chatting - laughing? - with friends. Or be prepared to get asleep in your seat while the rest of the people around you snore !

Fun but too much Woody Allenish
14 February 2004
It's a light kind of movie that keeps you entertained for a couple of hours. Don't expect a great blockbuster, it's just a comedy. Good actors but the same old neurotic Allen, that is getting kinda pathetic being himself all the time. He's done great movies, but he is definitely NOT an actor. He just plays himself, and that's a little boring. The worst thing : Helen Hunt's performance. Probably not her fault, since she's done greater jobs before. You can absolutely tell (without even knowing) she is directed by Woody Allen. He turned her into a caricature of himself. And the end is totally fiction ! Just his dreams come true in the screen.
