Heavenly Sword (2007 Video Game)
9/10
Like Nariko, this game is beautiful and powerful
9 January 2008
I would have given this game 10/10 if there had been just a bit more adventure to it (less linear). With the capabilities of the PS3 (the system I played it on) there is enough room and power to have this game more exploratory; like Assassin's Creed or any of the Grand Theft Auto games (and others I'm sure). This game was linear and had no interaction or random people to talk to or areas to explore. Nor were there other things you could do, other than just slash slash slash. Perhaps I should have judged it 8/10.

However, I put 9 out of 10 because of how well I enjoyed this game and the cinematic scenes in between battles. The story was quite nice and the cinematics were just like watching a movie with great motion and voice acting. I fully enjoyed this game for what it was and not what it could be. So that's why the 9 score.

If you liked Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time; you should also enjoy this game. Nariko is beautiful and Kai is cute and funny. I loved loved LOVED the 'after-touch' use in this game as well. It really added to the game to make up for any areas where it might have lacked.

I recommend this game and hope all enjoy it as much as I did. Again, though, if they make a sequel to this game, or whatever. I say to make villages and streets and characters that aren't necessarily essential to the driving of the game to its end. Otherwise, I loved this game.

Sin City (2005)

Style and Substance!
16 August 2005
It's full of substance; just so you know. This movie depicts the essence, if not the definition of a hero. Self-sacrifice. Love. In some cases vengeance. These are stories of superheroes that don't use tights and capes. It's what superman might be like, if he lived in darkness. They all have their strengths, weaknesses, heart, and don't give a s h i t what happens to themselves, as long as they can dish out some h e l l to the evils that lurk in the shadows of SIN CITY!

It's full of style. In an amped-up noir style, these stories cover the lives of the men and women of SIN CITY. All is not what it seems. Beautiful black and white noir shots and angle. Splashes of color, to give CPR to a very old style of film-making. Though this film is not for everyone, I have to say that all will agree that SIN CITY gives all new depth to movies that are made from comics.

I honestly found no flaws with this movie. I gave it 10 for honest reasons. Acting and directing melds together to create a film with breath-taking "color". Meaning, that what this film lacks in it's actual screen colors; it more than makes up for in the color of it's character (not to mentions characterS).

...oh yeah, I loved it!!

Laughs! Action! Camera! Want a good laugh? See this!
7 August 2005
This movie had me rolling with laughter through a good majority of it. Since there's far less negative than positive, I'm starting with the negative. Uncle Jessie's (Willie Nelson) jokes -one after another after another- was annoying. But I got past that. That's really about the only thing that I didn't really like about this movie. I noticed FAR too many people voted this movie a 1. I knew people wouldn't like this movie. A) It's just not some people's cup of tea. B) People unjustly were talking of boycotting this movie LONG ago, before they even knew one single thing about this film.

Ladies and gentlemen, this movie is not a 1, by any means. Even if people (those that honestly watched it, by the way) didn't like this movie; it deserves a 5 at the very least. People were hating this movie before they saw it and talking of boycotting it. That's a slap in the face to the movie industry and this film didn't deserve that. This movie was simply trying to have some fun, and some overly-sensitive conservatives ruined it for many. Any who voted this movie a 1 were simply the ones who wanted to boycott this film and never saw the movie.

That said, this movie wasn't a masterpiece. Nor did it want to be. It was the Dukes, "Just some good IL' boys, out havin' some fun." Nothing more. I voted this movie a 9, and I stand by that ranking; and not because I'm trying to off-set the people who voted it a 1 that didn't see it. I voted it a 9 because of these reasons.

1) The acting, though not the most dramatic, nor sophisticated was really quite good. Acting in that manner would have been out of place in this genre. This is a comedy through-and-through. Lots of action and lots of beautiful stunts with a beautiful car. It was nostalgic, for those who loved the TV show. Was a bit more adult than the TV version? Yes. But if you're an adult, you can handle it. Trust me! It's not that bad. -Johnny Knoxville: He is always so very funny. He played 'straight' man to Sean William Scott's funny. However, even in that role, he was very funny and gave his character the depth it deserved. -Sean William Scott: What can I say? He was Sean William Scott. You either like his movies, or you don't. I don't think I've disliked any movie he's been in. He's hilarious and very energetic. You gotta love him! As much as he loves his General Lee. Which brings me to the next character: -The General Lee: Not an actor, but this character in the movie was awesome and gave me a great feeling to see 'him' again. -Jessica Simpson: A good acting job that fit the bill. And fit the Daisy Dukes she wore. Beautiful and sensitive. She's fun to watch. -Willie Nelson: Couldn't stand his jokes he KEPT telling. However, he did fine with what he had to work with. His dialog alone is why I took one star from a perfect score to this film (obviously for the genre). -Burt Reynolds: Great, sinister, and the only bad guy I know who wears white so well. Boss Hogg. He wasn't the old Boss Hogg, but he recreated his own version quite well.

2) Great actions shooting and fast-paced stunts. I loved seeing this car in action and action was what this car delivered. The car(s) had a lot of energy and Cooter really made a General Lee we could be proud of.

3) The script: What can I say that I haven't already said? It was hilarious. Well-written and well-timed. The cast had fun and we had fun watching them.

A great fun time was had by all in the theater I watched it at. It received applause and deserved it. I felt the movie put everyone at ease and make them lose themselves in laughter.

Don't believe the "1"s. If you believe this movie deserved a 1, than you really don't need to waste your time. But really. We've all seen movies that truly deserved a 1 rating and this movie isn't it. Didn't like it? You gotta give it some points, at least, for having a good time and giving us back The General Lee. I say again: for me, it's a 9. For some, maybe much less. But NOT a ONE!

Best if you've never heard of this movie before
6 August 2005
You'll notice by the stars I've given this GREAT film that '...before you see it the first time,' is implied. I had never before heard of this film and happened across it just because this week (and last) was a very slow rental experience (not much great coming in). I'm not sure how this movie slipped past me -I love Lucy Liu and Jeremy Northam is great too. Still, it did.

This movie is an awesome example of what to do if you don't have a large budget. It had just the right amount of plot and dialog to make it very interesting and keep the viewer in the dark; just enough. The entire film is you (the viewer) trying to figure out the plots many twists and turns. I would have given this film 10/10, however some of the shots were pretty fake looking. I don't hold that against this film too much, but I don't think it deserves a perfect score.

Lucy Liu is beautiful and mysterious (as always). I think she's pretty underrated as a serious talent. Nevermind her beauty (which is difficult), she really takes her roles seriously and doesn't rest on her appearance to drive her through scenes of sophisticated emotion. And she can seem cold and even lifeless if needed, as well.

Jeremy Northam does really well, at first, as quite a geeky corporate rat, willing to run through any maze to prove himself. However, as he changes throughout the film, it's like night and day. I know some fans of Clive Owen, Jude Law, or other hopefuls to become the next James Bond will hate me for this, but Northam would/could/should fit that bill. He's suave and cultured. He's got a great Bond posture and voice. I think he too can be cold if the situation calls for it, and rather down-to-Earth, as well.

Great film and definitely this movie-buff recommends it to be seen at least once if you like corporate espionage films.

It always makes me laugh
4 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was a lot of fun and still is. It's not perfectly crafted and articulated. However, it looks like a few very funny actors got together and had a lot of fun. There's so much insanity going on at all times, I can't stop laughing at some of the scenes, even though I've seen this movie a hundred times. I know this only a personal observation since I've shown this movie to several people. I've noticed a trend. People either find this movie hilarious, or they only laugh one time at one particular scene and not at all at the rest of it. That one scene? The scene where Sandy decides she's going to go after Darren once and for all and the nun makes a profane remark. Everyone seems to find that funny, even if they didn't laugh one time at the rest of the movie.

I and the rest of my friends that love this movie get together once in a while just to watch this movie and laugh all over again. It's the combination of Jack Black and Steve Zahn, with an outrageous and zany proposal, thrown together.

Amanda Peet is gorgeous in this, as well as deadly. She's a tough-as-nails b****, and isn't about to take any crap from the Silverman Liberation Front. Darren's friends are in WAY over their heads with Judith as their nemesis.

It's crazy! It's fun!

Prozac Nation (2001)

A very hard film
4 August 2005
Hard, in that it deals with depression in, possibly, it's harshest form. Hurting others ("ones you love") while alienating yourself to any of your peers who might have cared about you. To see someone on such a collision course of self destruction is always hard to see. Especially, since it's performed by such a deep and feeling actress. Christina Ricci could possibly have had a similar situation as the writer of this story, since it LOOKS like she knew exactly what her character was going through. You could read it on her face.

Jessica Lange was brilliant in this as (Mrs. Wurtzel) the mother. She had problems of her own, which really served to mess with her daughter's mind early on. However, if the road to hell is paved with good intentions, this writer's mother is doomed. She made mistakes and her daughter made her pays dearly for them.

This movie also goes into Ricci's character's inner-thoughts right during episodes of lashing out and it's painful to see how people can't control themselves. Especially when she gets through crying over hurting her mother and then apologizes with tears in her eyes and then lashes out right away... then apologizes again. From Lange's expression, you could tell that she was becoming numb to all the assault's.

Great performances, and a somewhat depressing, though poignant message. It's easy to see how so many people were affected by this movie. Often some have attacked the performance of Ricci, when really I believe they were more angry at the character she was playing. Her performance was almost flawless. This type of character always makes the viewer emotional, since most people wouldn't treat others in the way the character did. Nevertheless, the honestly of the writer of this story is to be commended.

Watch it to see how it turns out. Even if getting there might be painful.

Immortal (2004)

Lacking in some areas, but still a good movie.
3 August 2005
Before I mention the areas that this movie lacked in, I'd first like to say it was a good movie. Not great and not terrible.

Acting: This movie had some great acting talent, real or CGI (voices). However, I really enjoyed the performances of the main characters that were really doing the acting in person. For what they were given to work with, they really put forth their best and it was quite enjoyable.

Graphics: The graphics (for the budget they were given) were not in any way objectionable. They were pretty good and showed a beginning to a genre that could really do well. It forces people to pay attention to the story and not get too wrapped up in whether it has their favorite actor/actress in it or not. (Other than the 'real' performances, that is). Still, this movie can boast some really beautiful performances.

The story: This is really the only place that I wasn't all that interested. The lower-end graphics really only helped the story, rather than take away from it (IMO). This story was definitely original, and really didn't need any actions scenes in it. It just wasn't all that interesting. The concept of Horus and what he was wanting to do on Earth was pretty interesting. However, it was just somewhat shallow and predictable. Not terribly... just borderline; otherwise I would have given it less than 6. I think this type of artistic expression is a good beginning, though. I could see many stories going to screen in this fashion and if they're more interesting plots, they could really go far in the cinematic world.

Honestly, I'd like to see more attempts like this, mixing human actors and CGI environments to create truly artistic films. With a stronger storyline and more character development, this film would have easily been a 10. But hell, 6 isn't shabby.

On a personal note, I'd love to see almost any Phillip K. Dick story (short or novel) portrayed in this medium. If they ever remake 'Blade Runner', it could do well in this fashion. However, DON'T TOUCH BLADE RUNNER... lol!

Light-hearted even though such a large heart
2 August 2005
I found this movie to be quite enjoyable. It was really quirky in several places, but since I knew it was about an asylum for mental patients in Russia, I already imagined it was going to be strange. However, the strangeness of this piece never over-powered the plot. It never detracted from my enjoyment of it.

Neither did having to read subtitles (again, since I knew it was Russian). There was a large volume of rapid dialogue, so it was easy enough to read along with the story. Call me a naive or arrogant, but I had no idea Russia made such good movies. If this film is indicative of the other display of mainstream Russian movies, I'd watch them all.

The main character (and actress) was a joy to watch. She had a big heart and a smile to go with it. She was able to take away moments of tension or strife (if only, possibly in her mind) when she'd play the accordian. She was helpful to all the patients and the Chechans that came to their 'home'. This story makes you wonder of some "mental patients" really belong out here with the rest of us "normal" people. And many of us out here, probably more belong in an asylum.

All in all, I say this movie is worth watching, if you have an open mind. Her love and obsession for her "fiance" Bryan Adams just endeared me to her character even more. I was under the impression that she only knew one of his songs, as it was the only Bryan Adams song that would play at many intervals. More of his music would have been nice, but didn't bother the story, at all.

Good quality entertainment with a large, light heart.

Stealth (2005)
9/10
High action, high suspense.
29 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I just now got back from the theater after seeing 'Stealth'. I'm still coming down from all the intense action, suspense, and awesome dog-fighting scenes. Not since 'Top Gun' have I been so engrossed in a high action dog-fighting film. The scenes were breath-taking and so fast. I felt like I was right in the cockpit with Jessica Biel, Josh Lucas, Jamie Fox, or even EDI. The eye-candy and intense aerial battle scenes are reason enough to see this movie. It was very entertaining and so much fun! A few things that weren't pulled off so well were a few racial stereotypes, regarding the role for Jamie Fox. It didn't ruin the movie, but I just didn't think it was necessary to make him the skirt-chaser. After seeing him in 'Ray' and 'Collateral' we know he can act outside of the stereotypes. I was hoping for him to play a more intellectual role. Although, his role was still great.

Josh Lucas was good and didn't go over-the-top with his role. He played a great intellectual for his part. The romance was sort of forced and sudden, but he's a great actor.

Jessica Biel was beautiful and no slouch for representing her gender in a male-dominated field. She was gorgeous, and yet a force to be reckoned with (once on her own, for sure). She doesn't let her looks get in the way.

However, the plot was somewhat familiar with many films where man is pitted against machine. I was often reminded of 'Short Circuit' in a more serious environment. That environment, of course, being national security and warfare. Still, I didn't mind having that genre brought up... it's been many years since that movie came out.

However, I can't say enough for the special effects, graphics and intense action of this film. I'll watch it again and again and that's how I know I give it a 9/10.

Trauma (I) (2004)

What to do if you have a low budget!
29 July 2005
Make THIS film! Seriously, this film shows how to make a truly scary film without the special effects budget of some other horror films. 1) Hire great acting talent. 2) See #1

This movie had no cheap thrills, no special effects pizazz, and no hokey acting talent with great one-liners. I've never given Colin Firth his due. He is hands down, a really great actor and he should do more films like this, where he's not the nice guy. (Maybe he has, already, but thanks to this film, I'm going to check now).

This plot didn't need anything extra to weigh it down. And it was very nicely acted out.

Mena Suvari is so adorable in this role. She really seems too good to be true. I've always liked her in any movie and this is no exception. But she seems to work well with Colin and I believe they should do another movie together.

If you're looking for ghosts or demons. Things that jump out and make you scream. Or hokey one-liners and teenagers engaging in sexual acts while be watched, stalked, and then hacked by a knife-wielding maniac. Look elsewhere... far from this film. If you want to see horrors of the psyche and a genuine mental thriller, 'Trauma' is a very great choice.

This is my kind of movie....
27 July 2005
Action. Good vs. evil. Angels and demons. A man on the edge. Cheesy... yes, and many intervals. However, I just really like watching this movie. Keanu plays the part as 'the one' very well, and it's no different in this movie. I think he does better as a character that's kinda clueless (like in Matrix). When he is supposed to be a seasoned expert at something, he 'overdoes' the cockiness. Still, I just thought he was a real gas in this movie, and the whole badass character always appeals to me in movies like this.

All in all, I'd say this movie might not be for many people. But, characters and plot are right up my alley.

Great acting, great direction, great story
25 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this film. First a comment on the acting: Ewen McGregor - SO nice to see he won't get type-cast, since he does many different films. He's a great actor and shows at least 2 sides of his wide spectrum of character. He didn't seem to have one awkward acting moment in this movie. He helped make it great.

Scarlett Johansen - She has really blossomed and bloomed (or whatever) into a beautiful and talented and enjoyable actress with more depth than you might, at first, imagine. She was able to aptly harness the traits of someone who's both naive and savvy at the same time. Plus she's gorgeous and her facial expressions say it all.

Steve Buscemi - Yet another fine performance, Steve! You never disappoint.

Djimon Hounsou - Stepping out of his 'normal' roles nicely. First began to see it in Constantine and it's nice to see him in a role that doesn't necessarily HAVE to call for an African. He's a great talented actor and well deserves this role variation. He's more than paid his dues to Hollywood. Not that he shouldn't do roles that call for a strong 'guide'-type role in Africa, as well.

Sean Bean - Did a great job in this film too. Like Hounsou, he seems to do a fine job in every movie he's in. It'd be nice to see him do a different type of character. Nonetheless, was perfect for the role he played in this movie.

Direction: The scenes and camera angles shot for a particular emotion was covered very professionally. The acting talent was expertly enhanced by really good direction in this film. I have scenes that I didn't like in this film (albeit some were very unbelievable, but in an enjoyable way).

SPOILERS!!!! The scene falling from that building, riding a large sign (letter 'R') was very far-fetched by very thrilling. However, the "Jesus really loves you!" comment was extremely hilarious.

I also loved the scene where Scarlett Johansen was watching her 'sponsor' on that commercial for Calvin Klein and watching 'herself' kissing someone, having never experienced that for herself. Then the way she touched her own lips. It was a very special moment in that film.

It broke my heart.... again
3 May 2005
I've seen this production three times on stage. Twice in Chicago and once in Toronto. Watching this movie, just now, on my computer has broke my heart again. I wish I had seen it in the theater where the sound would have been better. However, you know what... it didn't matter. I was so moved by the movie version, I had to give it a 10/10. This version shows even more, the plight of the Phantom. The music, more than once, made me get all choked up. Get this!! The very menu screen caused me to fight back tears. That Phantom theme gets me every time. I don't know why. In short: I loved this movie! You must give this movie a try for yourself, whether you've seen the stage production, or not. I hope to see it in person again, someday. However, it's SO AWESOME to own it and to know that I can watch it whenever I want (it came out today on DVD). I wouldn't change a thing in this version. I'm a man and it made me get teary-eyed. I hate to admit that, but it's true. The only move to ever to that to me before was A.I. Strange? Maybe. But this film had all the elements necessary to affect me: Music. Costumes. Superb acting. Superb vocal renditions. I loved it, and I can't say it enough.

Awkward
3 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I felt pretty uncomfortable watching Blade Trinity; when I saw it in the theater. It has since begun to grow on me. Though, first the 'awkwardness'. I felt uneasy watching these vastly different actors (and characters) clash in a big way. I know they were supposed to be on the opposition from the get-go, but instead of being a storyline clash, it just felt nervous and tense (to me).

Blade: Of course, he's always tense and serious and all business. Always has been. However, with the addition of the younger, and rag-tag bunch, known as the 'Nightstalkers', he seems even more tense and edgy than he normally would. Lashing out at them for almost no reason, at times and even when they've helped him / saved him. I got the feeling the actor didn't like the 'newbies', stealing some of his thunder on his title movie series. Almost can't blame him.

King: The antithesis to Blade in almost every way. Ryan Reynolds actually saved this movie on a few levels. It's like he through fuel on the fire of tension with his jokes that never seemed to get laughs, other than from the audience who laughed quite openly. Reynolds is perfect for the tense moments with his dry humor and sometimes childish quips. I liked him in this, and wouldn't mind if he reprized his role in future movies of either Blade or a spin-off of the Nightstalkers.

Abigail Whistler: Pretty cool. Again, serious. And naturally seemed to hit it off better with Blade than the others. The more I watch Trinity, the more I like her. She's not over-the-top and seems to have her own persona that sets her apart from the rest. Of course, she enters her own world whenever she puts on her earphones.

Still, the first few times I watched this, I was very uncomfortable watching these actors / characters interact. This could have been better, but I really enjoyed much of the humor and some of the fight sequences. Especially, Abigail's first one in the movie.

This movie aimed low...
29 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
...and hit it's mark. By aiming low, I mean it wasn't really trying to impress anyone and the ones who made it didn't seem to care if it did well, or not. However, it wasn't hyped or anything and I didn't even know it was out on the shelf for weeks. I do think it was a waste of time to watch it. I like movies with Tim Roth in them, but he didn't really do anything in this movie. The other actors were like cardboard cutouts of themselves at times... then at others, they were WAY to over the top. Mostly in the children. Granted they were supposed to be in turmoil, but nothing would ever seem to warrant or lead up to their sudden outbursts of defiance. Case in point:

|\\//\\SPOILERS//\\//| 1) The mother (McDowell) tells the kids it's time to eat. They practically ignore her and she tells them again, still calmly. Now they move but the one daughter snaps, "WE'RE COMING!"

OK... kids...

2) Then in a sudden and delayed and strange act of defiance, the son, holding his jacket and standing outside the door as they're getting in their car says abruptly, "I'm not going!" To which McDowell is like I'm your mother and then the kid goes... well... he DID have his jacket and he was outside and there was no prior protest about having to go.

END of spoilers

It just seemed like it was thrown together and no one really tried to have any development to this story, which MIGHT have been good, if done in another way. Still, even the plot and or story wasn't all that great to begin with.

4 stars is a low vote for me and this movie didn't really aim that high, I think. And didn't it seem like Margot Kidder had her mouth open a LOT. And she also had some strange, poorly timed pauses. Maybe she was trying to remember her lines. ANyway...

Blind Horizon (2003)

Excellent mystery
27 April 2005
I noticed a lot of people saying the plot in this movie is too complicated. Perhaps. If you go to see a movie for simplicity and lots of action. If that's the case, this movie isn't for you. However, if you like to work things out in your mind while you watch an enjoyable storyline and deep plot; then look no further. I'm surprised this movie didn't get higher marks -as surprised as I am that it wasn't showcased more with other mainstream movies. With names like Val Kilmer, Amy Smart, and Neve Campbell. I enjoyed every second of this film and I think it's well worth seeing at least once to see of you agree.

Performances by the cast were right on the money. I read someone putting Amy Smart down for her hair being less that glamorous... OH BROTHER. Don't know many nurses that work the late shift, eh? Besides it was fine and she still looks cute. Neve, on the other hand WAS gorgeous with a cute bob. However, appearances don't matter in this film. They all did a great job. OK, maybe Sam Shepard phoned his role in... but he was highly believable and a small town sheriff.

Val Kilmer was awesome in his quirky way. He made you believe he really did have amnesia. You could definitely tell where he put his own nuances to the role. He's quite a perfectionist... and a genius.

The directing was well-placed. There were other stories to tell for such a small town and this movie showed them all without leaving the central theme. The mystery unravels bits and pieces at a time; like it should and you never REALLY know for sure what's going to happen next. Terrific! I voted 9/10 because I haven't seen such a tremendous film so well hidden before. You be your own judge, but definitely give this film in the shadows a try.

Not too bad
13 April 2005
I give this movie points on everything that a movie requires, in order to be entertaining. However, where it lacked, I believe, is in it's storyline and plot. The direction was right on. The scenes were well planned and the time lapses were pretty intriguing. The acting was done very well by all, especially Natalie Portman. I normally don't care for Clive Owen, and even though I was 'supposed' to like him... I thought he did very well, also. Jude Law was right on, and Julia Roberts was OK.

Cinematography was nicely done and pleasing to the eye. The emotions of relationship turmoil was portrayed expertly by all.

I would have liked to have seen this quality of performance and direction done with a better story. All did fine with what they had to work with, but the story just wasn't as interesting as I had thought it would be, given the topic. Also, the ending lacked much to be desired. Without closure and without a sense of satisfaction. However, I've seen worse.

The Falls (2003)

Low budget, bad acting, cliché after cliché of many worn out plots
15 March 2005
I'm only going to write more because it's required. However, the summary I put at the top is way too wordy for what this film was. You pretty much know who's in on it from the beginning. In spite of its attempts at plot twists and turns -acting 'talent' trying hard to have looks of shock and dismay when a twist happens-, you never really need to wonder 'whodunit' in this 'mystery'.

The more I write, the more I feel bad that I have to write so much in order to have a comment, but rules are rules. I really feel bad about saying this, but this is the lowest I've ever rated a movie... I think. It makes me wonder what I'm saving votes of 1 and 2 for. However, I thought this film deserved a 3, since I believe there was some talent in the film. Johanna Watts (or is it Watson) did a pretty good job. She was crying and distraught in one part and I thought she conveyed that emotion well. The man who played the character that was 'the drummer' did well, too, for his short part.

Many of the actors did an 'ok' job. But the lead actor, David -forget his last name (terrible with names)- was pretty bad. I think he must have thought he was doing dramatic displays for 'The Young and the Restless' or 'Days of Our Lives'. If you try, you can just picture him in a white lab coat, playing a doctor with multiple personalities on 'General Hospital'. It doesn't help that the movie is even shot like a daytime soap. Although, I'm pretty sure I could shoot this same movie with a camcorder; though without the obvious and soap'ish sound editing.

First time I ever thought the money to rent this movie was wasted. Though, I wouldn't watch it again, unless I was paid a large sum of money.

Great acting. Simple story.
10 March 2005
To me, this film shows how great acting talent can save an otherwise hum-drum plot and story. Not that the story, itself, was bad. It was just not anything enthralling. What I liked most was seeing Neve act as a Southern Belle. Billy Burke played well off of Neve's strong presence. And Jake Busey... well, he just stole that letter quarter of this movie. I'd watch this movie again, just because I think the trio did really well. Though, I have to admit: Even if Neve wasn't a very good actress, all she'd have to do is smile and I wouldn't even notice if she was terrible. However, I've asked many people -friends and strangers, alike- and we all seem to agree that she is VERY talented. So, for once, my bias is on the money.

She even helped assure that I wasn't totally disgusted with 'When Will I Be Loved'. That's a major feat!

Now THIS time don't cancel BSG!!
20 January 2005
I like many other fans of the original series was very disheartened when Battlestar Galactica was canceled from TV, back in the day. I've been waiting for another television show since then to give me all the elements I've ever looked for in entertainment. Though all the Star Trek variations kept me interested and I enjoyed them all for the most part. It just wasn't the same. What was missing?? The VIPERS... that's right! Dogfighting space fighters is where it's at. Star Wars, as a movie, has kept me completely interested for that element. However, you don't get that much on television. Now, for a while, there was... the name escapes me... um... it had a group of star-fighting, piloting/dogfighting, marine types called the Wild Cards and it was VERY short-lived. Good, but not good enough, says I.

So you can imagine how happy I was that BSG was coming back. And it has the Vipers... the SAME ones. The newer fighters that were shown in some scenes (like Apollo's fighter that he flew in on) and they look very cool. But it was nice to see the old Vipers back in action. But there's a deep plot to this version, too. I thought I was going to HATE Starbuck as a woman. WRONG! She's great!! And if ever a woman would take Dirk Benedict's place, she's PERFECT for it. I thought she was going to WAY overdo the cocky thing, but she does it just enough. It was a nice touch. I didn't remember Boomer, I guess... I don't know why. So, it was OK that she was a woman and a damn fine actress for her too. But what was even cooler was the female president and the female leader/bombshell of the Cylons.

All in all, I'm very pleased with this mini-series and I've heard that the series itself has started too. I can't wait to get cable again to see the adventures and of course DOGFIGHTING continue.

Please, if any Sci Fi network execs see this and other posts here.... PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THIS SERIES!

A good defense to Moore's hype
19 January 2005
Granted, I'll admit this film leaned toward being one-sided, however not as far as Moore's 'documentary' leaned. It was good to see many of Moore's claims counter-attacked in this film. Where Moore went on the offensive first, this film was a good answer from the conservative/right/republican group toward his biased and floating accusations.

It was good to see Moore's opinions and how he was able to orchestrate and redesign facts to fit his theories. Nevertheless, it was refreshing to see those opinions systematically brought out into the light on Fahrenhype... Both are biased and have their agendas, it was just nice to see the accusations refuted. Neither of them convinced me in one way or the other. Both could just as easily be telling the truth as they see it. Still, Moore was quite obviously driven by other goals than to merely discuss any form of truth.

Thought-provoking excellence
21 September 2004
Now this is what I look for in a movie. Honestly, most likely over my head.

However, I'd rather be stumped by a movie, than to have it too easily discovered in the first 10 mins. of viewing. I plan on watching this movie many many times. I have more questions than answers right now. Nevertheless, I just know I really enjoyed the depth and dark humor of this film. To think, I almost didn't see it.

I think everyone that worked on this film were at the peak of their game. Even Noah Wyle. No one tried to go overboard on dramatics, and still it was all pulled off convincingly. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone and I don't want to say anymore. This one MUST be enjoyed without any information before-hand.

Life/death serious pulp fiction
30 August 2004
This movie's format reminded a lot of pulp fiction which worked well for this story. I think high marks go all around on this movie. Visual, acting, direction, casting, and dramatic script. You know, I really don't care for Sean Penn and Benecio Del Toro all that much. Or haven't in the past. I like Sean with less lines and Benecio with more, I guess. They both did superbly. Sean Penn should've earned his Oscar for THIS film and not for Mystic River. In this one he was much more convincing and brooding. When he doesn't talk, it's almost more moving. And Benicio was actually a likeable character and not at all overblown as I've thought of him in the past.

Naomi Watts is always good. But in this film she was really great. Other than being a mix of many sad stories... I'd watch this film over and over again, because it's so powerful. I recommend anyone watch this movie at least once. Talk about a VERY different (in a good way) movie! Where did this one come from out of all the cookie-cutter movies that keep coming down the pike.

If there's ONE thing I take from this film, it's NEVER judge a person. Not by their past, not by how they speak, and not even by their actions. You just can't judge a person because we ALL lose "21 Grams" at the time of our death. But that doesn't begin to measure the loss to the survivors.

Good...
10 March 2004
This was a good movie. Not much else to say about it that you can't read on the back of the box. Action, violence, sexy Selma Hayek, guns, and some quirky humor. It's better than the first one, but partly in that I think Depp's character adds a quality that was lacking in the first. PLUS (and I don't mind swearing all that much; and even like it sometimes) there isn't as much of the F-word in this one, that helps. The action is good, the performances good, and the story is ok. That's all.

This isn't the deepest movie, but I think most people will enjoy it some if there's not much else to do. I voted 7/10 because i like Depp and Hayek in it. Everything else was good too, but would have warranted only 6 instead. Thank you

GREAT MOVIE - if you're hoping to see another one.
10 November 2003
Warning: Spoilers
It appears as though the Wachowski Bros. would actually like to make another Matrix some day after all. That is, if they want to answer some of the questions they brought of in this 'finale'. I was informed that this final sequel was supposed to wrap it up. In some ways, it did just that.

SPOILERS - SPOILERS - SPOILERS

SURE, it looks like Morpheus and Niobi are finding their lost love. Zee and the operator from Morpheus's team were reunited emotionally after much tense worry over whether they'd see each other again. Young geek has become a man through war and fire. AND the war, of course is over... Or is it? And for how long? I'll tell you how long! Just as long as the machines decide 'it's over'. At some point down the line, that shakey truce could unravel. Naturally, not due to the machines changing their mind; i'm sure they don't change their mind or lie like we do. BUT, what if the unstable humans decide to form some kind of attack? Maybe they won't as long as they know the machines could wipe them out whenever they take a notion. But is that REALLY freedom??? Not for me, but maybe for the W Bros. it's good enough. And then there's The One. Is he dead? Well, could be, but the oracle says, 'oh i'm sure we'll see him again.' Hmmm... what's this? Doesn't sound like the wrapping-up closure I was looking for in this film. Believe me, I don't mind if they want to make another film; but just don't leave me hanging as to whether they actually will or not.

NOT TO MENTION, my favorite character SPOILER of MAJOR PROPORTIONS: Trinity gets killed in this one. I didn't like that. NOW, if they had given any closure to this movie, I'd be fine with this. But they didn't, it's STILL open and almost as much as at the end of Reloaded. And way more open than at the end of the first Matrix. To me, that's just not right. Say you'll make another one or close this up.

I ONLY say this because these three movies drew me into them. I'm the hugest fan of these movies compared to anyone. I think as a trilogy (omitting the ending to this one) They ARE THE best movies I have ever seen. I don't mind that this one ended with such an obvious openning for more at it's conclusion, just DON'T SAY THERE's no more!!! Make more or wrap it up, that's all i'm saying.

I'm only extremely fearful that the Brothers created a bolder to heavy for them to lift. I could see how making the spectrum of this drama an overwhelming task to conclude once and for all, but that's why they get paid so much, isn't it? I mean, with the money they'll walk away from after all the dust clears, you'd think they could have made the ending a bit contained that the one they did. IN FACT: MY ONLY ONLY complaint (other than SPOILER the demise of Trinity (and Neo, too; to me THEY are The One, not just Neo.) Trinity's love for him; i think, gave him his power -if you remember from the first one) is the ending. I couldn't have dreamed of a movie that made me love them more than this trilogy. But the ending left me with a sick feeling in my stomach. But ONLY because I fear there will be no more movies. HONEST.

Oh yeah; and one more FEAR. What if they make this into a TV show. Fine. But what if it bombs? It would most likely be cut off with no more closure. That's what i'm saying!!!

SPOILERS ARE DONE!!!

All in all, I loved these films. No offense Keanu, but if any director can make your performances so believable and real, they deserve all the money they get! Not really, however, Mr. Reeves did a WoNDERFUL job in his character. AND CARRIE ANN MOSS was tough, enchanting, and just plain cool. Excellent work there for both. There are just too many names to go on with, but Fishburne was awesome too. I like any movie he's in, so there wasn't much surprise there that I like him yet again. All the acting was top-notch.

The special effects: well, I'd need a WHOLE other sections to send in if I wrote about them, except that they were the BEST I've ever seen. AND to those 'poo-pooers' that keep griping about CGI. All I have to say is, get used to it; it's here to stay. And to me that's a good thing. I think it's just as good as the clay models or other tactics of old. In some cases, even better. I'd watch the movie right now, despite it's ending, just to see the attack on Zion by the sentinel, snake thing.

I gave this movie 8/10. I wanted to give 10/10 and WILL if they make another movie. But I can see me watching the first ones again and feeling bad, knowing that the end won't satisfy me.
