Lackadaisy (2023)
Absolutely brimming with potential
This shows immense potential. The animation was spectacular. The characters personalities and dynamics show promise. The story is enough to get one interested and I am ready for more. The only issue I may have is that perhaps for the pilot a bit more for the story could have been done. Some of the characters we didn't get a whole ton with as well. However in a way that shouldn't be taken as entirely a bad thing. Part of why I even mention it was that what I did get made me really want more. The show like the drink it centers around is addictive in its own way making me wish to have more. I believe the potential of this animation if given a strong direction could be prove to be truly something spectacular as a series.
Unus Annus (2019)
It has been a while and I still love this show
It has truly been a while since this show ended. I probably should have written a review a long time ago but..Truly this was something special. This show...or series...or whatever you'd call it was like a variety show with various acts or adventures every day which you never knew what it would be that day going in. It was an artistic experience..Two guys goofing off..a horror show..A comedy show..Whatever it wanted to be and whenever it wanted to be. It was truly an exciting experience to be apart of and I appreciate it for what it brought to the table on all fronts. It is an experience I believe that will be left on the hearts for the many who experienced it live. In a way it's a time capsule of a year that had its ups..its downs..In a way the show is a reflection of that time and where people were at that time. A part of me wishes that somehow there could be a part two to the adventure but I doubt that would ever happen. All I can say is it was a blast.
The Amazing Digital Circus: Candy Carrier Chaos! (2024)
An improvement upon the Pilot
Building off the pilot this episode further harnessed the potential of this show improving on all fronts. More great music. Even better visuals and animation. More of (most of) the characters. A few new faces! Additionally a few jokes that actually really hit. It was a fun time and one I thoroughly enjoyed. It makes me excited to see more from this team as so far it's handling some themes I haven't really seen other shows tackle much. I really hope they keep this momentum going and I feel that I'm likely to watch (and potentially review) the entire series as it airs. All in all a great step in the show that makes me wait with anticipation for what next the show has in store.
The Amazing Digital Circus: Pilot (2023)
A pilot full of promise
This pilot definitely showed promise and the potential of the show and its concepts. Its animation is great with plenty of colors, a strong aesthetic and style as well as showing the emotions of the characters well. Animation is a great way to show such things and this show does a great job of showing that all off. Additionally we get a decent taste of the characters with the pilot doing a decent job of introducing us to our main cast even if perhaps your left in the end wanting a bit more of a taste of some of them. The music was great and I would expect no less from Gooseworx who is known not just for their role in YouTube animation but also their music.
Doctor Who: The Greatest Show in the Galaxy: Part One (1988)
My favorite 7th doctor story
This story is probably my favorite of all the stories for the 7th doctors era. It is imaginative with a world that feels strange and threatening alongside making a surprisingly barren world feel rather lively if that makes sense. The 7th doctor and Ace give great performances in this episode especially for the Doctor. It is a story that sucks you in with a unique atmosphere and embodies some of the best of late 80s who. The villains feel menacing and threatening in a way that helps to push the mystery of the story which hooks you in and gets you excited to learn what the truth is. If you want some good Dr who with a strong 80s feel and a good story this is a pretty good place to look.
Doctor Who: The Happiness Patrol: Part One (1988)
Great atmosphere
I love this story. I love its atmosphere. It's entire vibe. It has a unique vibe to it with a strange dystopian world that stands out to me Amidst the sea of various dystopian worlds in fiction. Its use of lighting at times even gives me a slight Tim Burton esque feeling. It's a bit impressive how stylistic it feels at time given the shows obvious budgetary limitations at the time and while I know many find some of the main villains in this story laughable I feel they do a satisfactory job even if they do often fail at being intimidating. There are some strange elements that don't feel like they belong but in general it's an interesting watch with interesting musical choices, sets and a decent overall story that feels right at home in the seventh doctors era.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
I enjoyed it but it could definitely be better
I personally enjoyed this but I do feel it could have been better especially with the ideas and powers of the villain. I feel like the legacy characters could have been given a few more victories. Perhaps having the main villain send tons of ghosts to attack and having the old cast fight them holding the flank while the new cast take on the big bad would have worked. It needed a bit of a better balance. Another thing they could have maybe done would have been something along the lines of a strong mentorship role with the old teaching the new some. That might have worked. However overall I did enjoy the film and the effects were good. It evoked some nostalgia and maybe at times leaned into a little hard. It could have done more work on some of the new characters in making them likable and one of the new characters makes a rather poor decision that feels a bit..Dumb? It really lowered my opinion of that character as it didn't feel like they should make that decision given the chemistry I felt between them and the character they make the dumb decision for wasn't strong enough for it to be a convincing decision in my mind.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)
Enjoyable and felt surprisingly authentic
This was a good movie. I didn't expect a whole lot from it initially and went in because I was curious but found that it had a surprisingly authentic feel to it even down to the turtles feeling a bit like actual young teenagers without screaming "How do you do fellow kids?" The art style was a mixed bag with some parts looking great while other areas not so much but I was able to immerse myself in the movie and its world sufficiently. They also did a decent job with the villain making them sufficiently menacing with good stakes and intimidation factor without having to immediately bring out the heavy hitters everyone knows from the TMNT franchise. It makes me excited about the possibility of a sequel where we can see those heavy hitters in action and I'm hoping we get to see that in the future.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
The only problem is having to wait for the next part
This was great. Just spectacular. Great story. Great characters. Good dynamics. Great stakes. Amazing animation. This helped push the boundaries of what western animation could accomplish and I think showed many they could step up their game in the animation field. My only hope is that studios take the right lessons from this and learn from this masterpiece which came together like a great stew with a whole lot of ingredients that blend together seamlessly into an amazing experience they couldn't be on their own. The music was good accentuating the action and story. The use of color was skillful perfect at conveying themes and emotions. Every part of this film felt purposeful and impactful.
Doctor Who: Time and the Rani: Part One (1987)
I know my rating is high but..
This episode isn't the greatest regeneration story..But it's fun. As much as I tried I just can't hate this episode. It's goofy. It's silly. It's cheesy. Its writing isn't the best. Sylvester McCoy is figuring things out. The effects scream 80s..and yet it's fun. It's a fun story. Sylvester quickly shines a bit as a fun doctor even here and overall it's a fun time. While regrettably it's not a great send off to the sixth doctor it is an enjoyable time that's a bit unique and refreshing in the dr who catalog compared to some of the seasons it finds itself sandwiched in between. It doesn't deserve the rep it has had and is overall an enjoyable experience. It is definitely not the show at its best though and for an introduction to the seventh doctor I would far recommend other better stories for that.
Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder (2023)
A hopeful sign for the future
While this review is written sometime after this aired I have to say. This is what gave me back my hope for the new era after being a little put off by the special that preceeded it. It has the genuine feel of doctor who at its best. A creative setting with a genuinely inventive and creepy at times villain/monster. It felt like there was genuine danger and stakes. The increased budget and new effects were used to excellent effect here feeling like something from the 2005-2010 era in the best ways while also feeling new..In a sense it felt reinvigorated or dare I say regenerated. It brought me on an adventure that felt like the show I fell in love with when I was a kid yet also didn't feel like a shoddy copy. The music was good. The acting great. For a bit it felt like this team never stepped away from the TARDIS. I hope this is a sign of what is to come.
Doctor Who: The Devil's Chord (2024)
Now that's more like it
Now this. This was more like what I expected from this program. Good stakes. Some fun. Some excitement. Some exciting chases, an actually decent and even slightly menacing villain. My hope is for more of this compared to the prior story. This story managed to find a far better balance of silly and seriousness knowing when to be a bit silly and when to be serious for the most part with one exception that I felt leaned a little to far into the silly direction near the end of the episode. One complaint I do have is the unfortunate lack of use of a certain handful of historical characters who I felt could have been used more. As is they feel almost more like a cameo then a proper starring. Still this felt a bit more like a proper adventure with the Doctor and gives me some hope for the future.
Doctor Who: Space Babies (2024)
A little to silly
This one I felt was a little to silly especially for our second story with this doctor. I'm not asking for overly serious. I actually thought the next episode was a bit silly but I enjoyed it far more than this one. The titular babies I think were to much and the writing wasn't anything spectacular. It's not the worst but considering my expectations it fell woefully beneath them. I can say the graphics, effects and sets were however not bad clearly showing off the shows increased budget and production value which is a positive but at the core of dr who I feel are creative stories, interesting monsters and good characters. As far as that goes you can get a better doctor who fix elsewhere.
