All Night Long (1962)
poor to fair
It's really unfortunate, but ultimately this is not a very good movie. The screenplay is downright awful, the lip synching is brutal, and although some of the actors try their best, they're obviously fighting a losing cause. Maybe if the director had maintained more control, he might have reigned in some of the the actor's ego (and perhaps the same could be said for his own ego), and then he might have allowed a whole lot more more screen time to the truly fabulous jazz musicians who were featured only intermittently throughout this movie. In fact, the only thing that saves this movie from being a complete clunker is the presence of the jazz musicians.
Rio Grande (1950)
I expected so much more!
How this movie gets an average rating of 7 is totally beyond me. The writing is so ludicrous it's not surprising John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara "phoned in" their performances. The otherwise brilliant director, John Ford, didn't seem to know whether he wanted to make a comedy, a western, or a musical. I'm a huge fan of the "Sons of the Pioneers", but they are badly miss-used in this movie, to the point where their musical interludes become laughable. Over all, the continuity was atrocious, and character development non-existent (with the possible exception of the actor playing John Wayne's son, (Claude Jarman Jr.). This is a highly overrated movie!
