The Princess Diaries (2001)
One of the worst movies I have ever seen
I couldn't bear this movie. I am a thirtysomething male with no kids, so I was certainly the wrong demographic. But I generally like Disney movies, romantic comedies, Sandler movies, Arnold movies, Jane Austen movies. Hey, I like most any movie. But I was bored and even offended by this one. The script was poor, the dialogue was vacuous, and the acting was shaky. I considered walking out but was with someone else. I even fell asleep two-thirds of the way through. I guess I missed the magic entirely. Avoid this one unless you have a relative in the cast. Take an oath right now to stay away if you are male or are over 14 years old.
The Natural (1984)
One of my all-time favorites
Perhaps the best sports film ever, this movie has a sparkling script, an all-star cast, and terrific performances. Robert Redford has the perfect approach to every scene. As the the gruff old-time manager and perennial loser, Wilford Brimley has never been better. The entire cast is spot on. This film never received the credit that it deserved, perhaps due to the fact that it bears little resemblance to Bernard Malamud's The Natural, on which it is loosely based. This Natural is more about good and evil, and it draws on the boyish wonder of heroes and summertime baseball. This film is what movie-making should be about.
