Election (1999)
An outstanding satire
Ethics and Morals
I'm not generally a fan of excessive voice-over and quirky, stylised direction but here it's all done so well. It seems to suffer from that classic "this film didn't make sense" style of review, but it clearly does. A wonderful script with a great mix of slapstick and intelligent comedy and winning performances from Broderick, a brilliant Reese Witherspoon and the normally hapless Chris Klein.
And, yes, it has sex in it. It's hardly titillating and is always completely relevant to the plot. But if you simply hate seeing sex (not nudity, of which there is very little) in films then you won't like it.
It beats Rushmore to the 'best film set in a high school' award.
Minority Report (2002)
Good, solid entertainment
Some of the characters are stereotypes, Spielberg does insist on ramming information down our throats and there is a fair bit of clunky exposition.
But this is still a good film.
And yes, there are some plot holes, but a lot of those pointed out in these comments are just people not understanding the film. You can't blame Spielberg for your own stupidity. Although you can blame him for his dumb sappy ending with the ridiculous "and we all lived happily ever after" voice-over.
I'd recommend it, go see it.
In the Company of Men (1997)
Painful in a good way
This isn't a strictly enjoyable film, but it's a film that should be watched. I found that (if you're a man) it's best to watch it through once on your own, then watch it again with (male) friends who haven't seen it before. That way you get to watch them try to wriggle out of their own skin.
It's dialogue heavy and quite theatrical, so dark that it goes way past black and off the spectrum somewhere else, and features outstanding performances from Aaron Eckhart and Matt Malloy. You don't sympathise or empathise with the central characters in this film - at best you pity and you hate.
It's an interesting and compelling film. If you're a man it will make you feel sick, make you feel ashamed. If you're a woman, it's probably just going to make you angry. But it is definitely worth seeing.
