Rang De Basanti (2006)
intellectual shallowness
I don't know why people liked this movie. a tapori is compared with bhagat singh.. and basically the yo man crowd who didn't know much about the freedom struggle and has poor or little reading liked it to make a fashion statement. speaks of intellectual shallowness of south Asia. when bollywood meets history, it better be objective, else though it might be a money spinner, it will suck and will show the shallowness of the makers and the jahil yo mans who like such stuff. if you want to see how the movies in historical context be made watch bhagat singh or bose.. even ghulam though average as a movie had things right in the historical perspective and then there is great 1942 a love stroy.
Swades: We, the People (2004)
A ground breaking movie
I watched the movie last night and it was a blissful experience to say the least. Though this movie might not be a racy entertainer, it has a number of pluses attached to it that make it a good movie. 1. Shahrukh Khan is here yet again. One more time lifting the entire movie on his strong shoulders and performing his role to perfection. 2. The positive message of the movie is worth praising. 3. Technically it's a master piece (except some loopholes in editing). 4. Keeping in view the overall package, this will be a ground breaking movie and will introduce a new dimension to Indian cinema. 5. Music is a sure plus. 6. It has a number of great sequences. Below are a few a) Shahrukh's first interaction with Gayatri b) The yeh rasta song c) Shahrukh's meeting with Kaveri and his subsequent interaction with Gayatri. d) Scene at the tenant's tent. e) His speech to punchayat and villagers saying India is not mahan but can be. f) His entry in the Ramayan song. g) Gayatri saying to Shahrukh she loves him *****. h) Encounter between Shahrukh and Gayatri when he says he's going to leave for US. i) Interaction between Shahrukh and John.
On the whole keeping in view the uniqueness and the fact that Ashutush dared make such movie and the over all package 9.5+/10.
Veer-Zaara (2004)
somehow it works...
I watched it twice before I was being able to make an opinion about it. Though I do have some negatives about the movie...over all it is a good value for money. First talking about the plus sides... 1. Amitabh Bachan was awesome...one of the best performances of his lifetime in a short role.... 2. Screenplay and script deserve high grade.. though the dialogues aren't as catchy as were of DDLJ, DTPH or Mohabbatein...the overall screen play and twists and turns made this movie a treat to watch...specially Samia finding Zara in India catches everyone by surprise... 3. Rani's performance is A class and will surely win her some awards this year.... 4. Hima Malini looked cool as well as did her part with perfection. 5. Choice of locations for Indian village life is remarkable. 6. Though music on the whole is just about above average, a couple of scores in Bhangra beat are catchy. 7. And last but certainly not the least... Shahrukh Khan once again walks through a role with utmost perfection. I don't know whether it was deliberate or incidental, but his casualness and under toned acting as a youth made his performance as a gray-haired guy more prominent. Needless to see he was really skillful portraying a middle age prisoner.
And now the minus side.. Well the only minus that I have with this movie is the projection of Pakistani society. Every time Pakistan was shown in the film it never looked like Pakistan. The director seems quite unfamiliar with Pakistan, her society, her customs, her wedding rituals, her surroundings..just about everything. And this to me was a real big minus...that bigger a minus that it overshadowed the pluses of the movie in first viewing. No politician in Pakistan contesting from Lahore wears shirwani in his house for sure..in fact in the entire national assemblies of last 3-4 decades, you will hardly find any sherwani except the nawab's of bahawalpur and late Nasarullah Khan. No one in Lahore uses the Lakhnao Delhi style of adab for greetings. Nor does the ladies of the class shown wear jewels like Kiron Kher. It looked more like Muslim Lucknow rather than Pakistan. And this highlights one more thing - "India and Pakistan are two different and distant societies who know very little about each other. by the virtue of history, they do have things in common, but on the whole they have turned into two different societies. Pakistani society is different than the society of Indian muslims, it's more modern and has her own set of customs. It has moved quite a lot from the pre partition commonalities between the two cultures. And this is where Yash jee got it all wrong."
But all in all, a real good movie, with a daring plot and good screenplay full of surprises.
Chalte Chalte (2003)
An A-class family drama......
A lot has been said about the story line and stuff. I will confine myself to a few comments only: 1. Audiences go to the cinema hall for entertainment and any film that could hold them for 3 hrs is bound to be a hit. The one which has moments that could grip you in between does average business and rest are flops. Chalte Chalte with its music, acting, frames, screen play is one such film that grips you during the three hours of viewing and has all the ingredients of being a hit. 2. Shahrukh Khan once again shows why he rules Bollywood. Taking a wafer-thin plot all on his own to convert it into an Ace speaks volumes about the actors class. Anybody anywhere in hindi/urdu speaking communities can correlate himself to his role. After larger than life roles (and that too hits), the actor has managed to come up with a light film in a style and has shown why he is distinct in the best actor hall of Indian cinema. 3. This film might be the turning point of Rani Mukherjee's career and Aishwaria Rai might consider unlucky losing this film. 4. Aziz Mirza deserves full marks for keeping the story simple and executing it with style. 5. "Prem Nagarya" number reminds one of the 80's Yash Chopra or early 90's Rakesh Roshan numbers and is refreshing. 6. Chalte Chalte once again proves the fact that if a film is made keeping in view what audience wants, it will be a hit. Else, how could a film with a repeated theme, usual story line could be a hit.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001)
A film that grips you
You have melodious songs, all up-beat. You have Hritik and Kareena glittering. You find best of acting from Amitabh and Kajol. And even more Shahrukh and Jia steel the show. And despite all this the credit of this success goes to director, for it is one of those rare films which bounds you.....you can't leave it in the middle.
Devdas (2002)
A classic.....of masses
The joy-ride starts with all the glitter and shine of a Hollywood classic, it sails through the emotions and ends up at the death..so real and reality is the biggest plus of this great movie. Its loud in dialogues as the feudal society of early 20th century in India was and is not overpowered with emotions...as the people from that class should have been (expressive yet graceful). Technically it remains the best ever Indian film and one of the best around the world. Well done Bhansali. In acting Aish does wonders..Madhuri has shown why she is the queen of the bollywood and Shahrukh khan has reached where no Indian actor would have ever reached..I have seen Dilip sahab's Devdas too and bowing to the greatness of Dilip Sahab let me say,"Shahrukh did it better than him". Dialogues, sequences, frames, music and acting all there to give you a treat to watch..a movie in which one finds the glimpses of one's own life...beautiful yet so real, harsh and sad...
