Five Evenings (1979)
9/10
Unknown gem
9 April 2008
Watching the latest movies of that director is not a very pleasant experience. The experience is even worse, if you had seen his earlier work. I doubt many people did though, and I would like to encourage everyone to try to see this movie.

It is a deeply engaging drama - a story of love that got broken by the history but gets another chance. After all these years passed, however, the question is, are the people even capable to try for something that would change their whole life?

Leading roles are acted superbly (supporting kids have their worse and better moments), the story is told in an extremely tight manner and the final master shot is simply breathtaking, and perfectly rounds up the meaning of this movie. It is a showcase of an incredible talent. Whatever happened to Nikita after he made "The Sunburnt"?

1 of the best Polish movies...Ever!
19 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is something of a forgotten diamond, even in Poland, not many people have seen it. The director, Wojciech Marczewski, has been more active educating young directors (most of Scandinavian 90's new wave guys learned from him in Danish Film School) than film-making lately, and it's a real shame.

Most movies you see are easy to classify. "Escape..." not only is a film you can't really put your finger on, it works on all the levels it tries to achieve. For starters, I think it perfectly describes life in Poland around 80's. With the communist regime still ruling, ordinary people desperately searching for freedom or just trying to float by. Main character's (played brilliantly by 1 of best Polish actors, Janusz Gajos) doubts over his job as a censor echo the tough choices most people had to make at the time.

Then, we get the fantasy part - actors take over a movie doing what they wish on the screen, much to the delight of the audiences rebellious mood, while ordinary people start singing opera completely out of the blue. The questions of artist's responsibility and the role of art in every day life is presented with great power here, and the threat of the film being burned by authorities adds to the drama and the weight of the questions.

The comedy element (the scene around the beginning when secretary tells the boss the actors have rebelled, and he goes mental is one of my favorite scenes ever. In fact, I'll go an watch it again in a minute) is strong as well, helped by a superb cast of supporting actors, and sharp dialog. Marczewski found a great comedy idea in crossing the rebel movie with Allen's "Purple Rose of Cairo" and used it well.

It would be enough for most movies, and their directors, but Marczewski wasn't done. He added a bit of pondering about a philosophical problem of sin with some links to Dostoyevski and Shakespeare's works on the subject. In fact, the guy haunting the main character is recognized as "Raskolnikov" (the main character of Dostoyevski's "Crime and Punishment") in the final credits.

All these elements are tied together and balanced with magical directing and rather surprisingly the movie is not overwhelming or too long. Even if you fail to notice all the aspects of this great work, you'll still have a wonderful time and leave inspired if not completely shaken up.

There are not even ten Polish movies I would rate 10 out of 10. However, this is 1 of them.

Oldboy (2003)
9/10
A masterpiece for the cinema fanatics.
19 February 2008
The first time I watched "Old-boy", I was half-amazed, half-disgusted. I wasn't quite sure how to rate the movie in general. I knew 2 things: 1. From a visual point of view, it's one of the best movies I have ever seen. Cinematography & scenography are nothing short of perfection. 2. I had problems with the plot, some holes in it, and a general feeling of injustice, as crime seemed to be pretty lightweight compared with the punishment.

2nd time was a weird situation. A girl I knew tried to get into the film school, and the day before her exam she asked me to supply her with some movies that were interesting visually. 2 films we watched were "Natural Born Killers" and "Old-boy", and, especially the 2nd 1 was a revelation.

Knowing the plot, it was easy for me to concentrate on the visual side, and my friend always consumes the movies this way. Results of paying attention to the tiniest of details were stunning. I don't think there's 1 scene in there shot without an idea, without something happening in the background, or without an image responding to the theme of the scene.

Don't be a baby crying about violence - camera turns away in key moments. Don't be a smartarse, picking on the shortcomings of the plot - think about Hitchcock or Chaplin and how they gave a flying f... about plot. Appreciate the work of the whole crew, and for best effects watch it a couple of times. It's worth it.

Lenny (1974)
10/10
Brilliant movie
17 February 2008
After reading a couple of comments on "Lenny", claiming "Unfortunately not very funny" I have made an effort to register on IMDb.com, just to give my view. To the people who wrote the words along those lines - Has it ever occurred to you, that Lenny Bruce's life is just not a very funny story? Yes, he was 1 of the best comedians ever, but did you really expect 2 hours of laughter, and than at the end, a little reminder that something went very wrong here - a tiny reminder, not anything to shake you up too much? Really???

Yes, it is not very funny. If you decide to watch "Lenny", you will not get as many laughs, as you might have expected. I wouldn't say it is unfortunate though.

What you will get is an accurate description of an incredibly powerful, real character. Lenny might not be the most likable hero ever, but he was a guy who stood up for what he believed in, and had a lot of fight in him. Don't we want our movie heroes to be like that?

You'll get wonderful performances in the leading roles, a cinematography that each and every student of cinematography should be made to watch for hours, and Bob Fosse's direction, (helped by a modern approach to editing) simply stunning.

You'll be moved, you'll get a lot of food for thought and you'll feel enriched by this movie. But yeah, you won't get many laughs. What a waste of time, right?

Wrong.
