The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015)
Decent but I expected a lot more...
Bit disappointed, it's an improvement on Mockingjay part one but it still feels like it's lacking something. I though the first two were amazing and I kept going back to the cinema to see them again. The last two don't give me the desperate urge to revisit them. Maybe it's because I love the book so much and this doesn't compare? which is strange because it does stay very faithful to the book, right down to the epilogue (worked for the book, boring end to the film). I felt that all the gut-wrenching moments in the book fell a bit flat in the film. I barely cried and the book had me sobbing. There also weren't enough Katniss and Peeta moments, I wanted more romance dammit!! Tigress looked brilliant though, and the Pods and Underground scenes were great. It 'was' good, I'm only moaning because I wanted it to be fantastic and for me, it unfortunately wasn't.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
Hilarious - In A Good Way
I have been looking forward to watching this film for a while now and i am so happy that it didn't disappoint. The film looked amazing, The costumes, styling and sets were spot on and really helped set the tone of the film, my only slight grumble were the transitions, they could distract from the action a bit but i presume that was a homage to the TV series of the same name. Also i felt that most of the time the music worked superbly but sometimes it was perhaps a little too much and unnecessary for some scenes. I knew the film was going to be humorous from what i had previously seen in the trailers but i wasn't prepared for just how hilarious it was. I absolutely loved the sense of humour throughout. The film had a perfect mix of funny and serious moments. The actors were all amazing! I loved them all. I was so happy to see Henry Cavill back to his usual charming self, i always loved him in The Tudors but in Superman he was so cold and came across as very wooden. In this role however, he was perfect and i think he could have been a great Bond. Armie Hammer was perfect as always, I absolutely love him so i'm maybe being a tad biased but he was definitely my favourite character and i felt that he did the Russian accent justice. Alicia Vikander was super cute as usual and the chemistry between her and Armie was absolutely breathtaking. They sizzled together on screen. Special mention to Elizabeth Debicki and Hugh Grant who were also brilliant. The only reason that i haven't given this an even higher rating is for personal reasons, i often find myself losing interest with spy films and at points my interest started to drift off but i don't understand why Bond fans wouldn't enjoy this film too. I have no idea why it didn't do brilliantly in the cinema and i'll be very disappointed if it doesn't get the sequel that the ending sets it up for. I'd love to see these actors back working together again.
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015)
Goes out with a whimper
*sigh* I know not a lot of people agree with me but the Paranormal Activity franchise is a favourite of mine, they usually scare the crap out of me! sudden noises, flying objects, possession, scary coven, creepy kids, that clock whizzing by and even just the name Toby! Toby actually terrifies me! well...he did... I'm really gutted right now that the franchise really did not get the decent ending that i feel it deserved. It started of promising, with the usual getting to know the characters. Then they found that ridiculous camera, i think they must have definitely run out of found footage ideas. Maybe it would have worked a lot better in 3D but my cinema was only showing the 2D version so this gimmick was very much lost on me as it just made the films quality look weird. I was creeped out, not enough to nearly break my husband's hand but i was on edge. I didn't really appreciate knowing about Toby's presence, i much preferred the unknown dread of when he would next appear. It's not as scary knowing when he is around. The dread was building though, due to the numerous jump scares and the creepy kid then BOOM crappy CGI!!! This is one of my biggest pet hates! if you don't have the movie budget to support it then don't bother, cheap CGI looks ridiculous and is the most un-scary thing ever in a horror movie. You should never see Toby, your imagination is the best tool for imagining what he looks like. Of course they had to wreck everything by showing you what he looks like...grr! It wasn't even worth it! I very much missed the creepy coven and Katie from the previous movies, makes no sense that they are suddenly not present, when they have been such a big part of the story thus far. The ending was also absolutely awful!!!! I think my review makes it very obvious how annoyed and gutted i am that the franchise has went out with a whimper instead of a bang. Ghost Dimension therefore gets my lowest rating out of all six films (including The Marked Ones).
The Green Inferno (2013)
Not as gory or scary as you would expect.
Even though i had seen a ton of reviews saying this was poo, i thought that people were perhaps doing their usual Eli Roth bashing! but unfortunately on this occasion the reviews were pretty much spot on... The acting, if you can call it that was terrible most of the time, the acting newbies the tribe members were a lot more believable and they were actually the best part of this film by a mile. The first 40 mins of the film are painful, you are stuck watching these unlikable characters try to act and Lorenza Izzo's reasons for going there in the first place are ridiculous! She has a thing for the activist leader, sure he is decent looking but good looking enough to possibly die for....no! oh and he also very much has a girlfriend who is also on the trip. What was she thinking...urgh! Once they end up in the jungle it definitely gets better and what happens to the tribe's first sacrifice is absolutely epic. The deaths unfortunately get a lot less gory from there, in fact i would probably say there is more gore in The Walking Dead. This shocked me because Eli usually goes all out on the gore front (Hostel,Cabin Fever) He even says that this is his directors cut, which is surprising. Some things happen that are just ridiculous! I was watching this to be creeped out but i ended up finding it hilarious!!
*Stop reading now if you don't want it to be spoilt*
We see one of the girls squat in the corner of the cage with a bad case of the s***s, complete with plenty of fart noises. Someone dies and the team leader starts masturbating (EH?!), they then shove a bag of weed into the body so that the tribe get stoned while they are cooking their next meal. This works for a while but then backfires when they get the 'MUNCHIES!' the victim actual screams this before his demise. The ending also confused me so much, so did other various plot points which i only now understand because i seeked out the answers. This film definitely could have been so much more, its potential was definitely wasted.
In Secret (2013)
I expected more passion
I thought from the trailer that this was going to be a very passionate tale about a girl stuck with a horrific husband who falls for his best friend and a murder is then committed and covered up but that we would still be rooting for the lovers. Now that was pretty much what it was about but i just expected a lot more passion than there actually was and her husband wasn't horrific at all he was actually a really nice guy who is very unwell. Now i did feel for Therese getting stuck with marrying her sickly cousin but the outcome was undeserved and rather sad but yeah i know that is the point and that is the reason the story goes where it goes, however I definitely didn't end up rooting for the lovers. They actually ended up really annoying me when their relationship turned so quickly. The film did manage to powerfully support the saying 'be careful what you wish for' though. I won't lie, i mostly just watched this for Oscar Isacc and yes he is good as usual but also a bit bland as is Elizabeth Olson. Jessica Lange started off well but she then started overacting just like she did during her last stint on American Horror Story, Shirley Henderson was also very irritating. Definitely worth a watch though if you enjoy period dramas but this probably won't be one that i revisit. I will however be reading the book at some point in the hope of finding the passion that i expected to be present.
The Final Girls (2015)
Had Such Potential But For Me It Fell Flat
I thought the premise of this film sounded fantastic and after watching the trailer i thought that it looked really funny.....not so much... I did chuckle now and again but i expected so much more. I felt for Max and i could sympathise with her as I've also felt that same loss but i still didn't find myself rooting for her, Taissa Farmiga acts the exact same in everything i have ever seen her in and it is starting to bug me, she just pulls the same expressions constantly and it would be nice to see her in a different role to see if i'm wrong. I didn't really warm to very many of the characters but out of the bunch Malin Akerman's Amanda was definitely the best and most of the laughs were caused by the character Tina (slutty girl). The two scenes i enjoyed the most were both of those characters dancing to their individual songs. I won't say anymore than that though as i don't want to spoil anything for anyone. I also found the flashback scenes and the slow motion scenes to be very entertaining and i loved the films overall look but unfortunately that was all. It mostly fell flat for me, mostly because they were trying too hard to be funny and most of the jokes just aren't. During the end credits there was a blooper reel and they are some of the un-funniest bloopers i have ever seen. I cringed. This film really had the potential to be something great so i am definitely disappointed.
Black Mass (2015)
Johnny is back! but the film was a bit bland.
I have to admit that i expected more from this film, it's not bad, it's just not very exciting and kind of just plods along at parts. The film just had so much potential, the best scene was the one that i had previously seen in the trailer, it was very tense and uncomfortable to watch and left me wanting more. The actual film appears to be lacking this tension. There was also a lot crammed in and i kept finding myself getting a little lost and confused about what was happening and why? (didn't help that i almost dozed off at certain points, that's maybe why?). I think a lot of this is down to the films short run time, but even though the run time was short, for me, i think the film felt long. My husband felt that this story would have worked a lot better as a TV series and i do agree. Now onto Johnny, is he back to acting greatness? HELL YEAH! he was amazing! I can't fault his performance at all. He could flip from friendly to menacing in a second and he played a very believable James "Whitey" Bulger. I felt that all of the acting in this film was brilliant but Johnny was definitely the stand out performance for me and i'm hoping that everyone else will agree and Johnny can get back to being that amazing actor that he was always known as. There were also a few camera shots that i thought looked brilliant. So my final verdict is that it was a good movie but i wasn't blown away. I was, by Depp but the film itself not so much. I have definitely seen a lot better gangster movies than this one.
The Gift (2015)
Be Careful Who You Push Too Far!
This film was a pleasant surprise. I thought the trailer looked great but apart from Jason Bateman, i can't say that i was the biggest fan of the cast but this film may have changed that.. Joel Edgerton surprised me the most, i can't put my finger on why i didn't really like him in the past, there was just always something about him that irritated me. His acting was great in this film, he was brilliantly vulnerable but still slightly creepy, and he did a brilliant job of directing and i loved this story which he wrote. It really hit home with me as i also experienced bullying throughout my teenage years and i could definitely understand certain character motivations. Jason Bateman also did a great job of acting in a dramatic role, this was certainly a very different character to those he usually plays but he did still manage to make me laugh at points. Rebecca Hall also did a great job of pretty much carrying the film, I've found her to be pretty hit or miss but this was a brilliant role for her. I don't want to say too much, as everyone should experience this movie for themselves so i don't want to spoil anything. I even screamed out loud in terror at one point, this was definitely a great tension building film and you never knew what was going to happen next.
Knock Knock (2015)
Pretty Enjoyable Actually, The Reviews Are Overly Harsh!
I had prepared myself for the worst, as all the reviews i had seen prior to watching were saying that the film was terrible. Well i thoroughly enjoyed it and so did my husband. I'm so pleased because i had been looking forward to it ever since i had watched the trailer. I have actually enjoyed a few of Eli Roth's movies so maybe i am a fan of his film making style and that helped my enjoyment factor? To be honest i'm starting to feel that Eli is one of these directors that a vast majority of people just automatically dislike, a bit like the Adam Sandler effect (they will just automatically hate the movie without giving it a proper chance). This isn't a horror movie, well at least i didn't find it to be. It's more of a thriller and a comedy (some moments intentional but most moments probably not...). Now this film is definitely not amazing, it won't win any awards, apart from possibly another Razzie nomination for Keanu, but i enjoyed it for what it was - an entertaining movie. I thought the girls were brill and they were very hot, especially the blonde girl - Cuban actress - Ana de Armas. They were definitely over the top at times and some moments were definitely taken too far (I can see why they would offend some people) but i found them very fun to watch. Now...Keanu! oh dear! John Wick was definitely a fluke, he was back to his usual acting ways in this film but i loved it because i found him hilarious. I definitely laughed at scenes i shouldn't have been laughing at. So if you watch this film not expecting Oscar winning acting or scares, it's an entertaining watch, well it was for me...
Everest (2015)
Spectacular!
I was blown away by this movie! The acting was brilliant, they did a good job of getting you to care about the ones who mattered and i found that their fates genuinely effected me. The SFX were spectacular, after this film had finished i genuinely felt like i had climbed Everest with them. Perfect cinematography. Not once did i think anything looked fake, everything was completely believable. The music score was also brilliant and fitted into the film perfectly. This movie stressed me out to the max, I kept squirming in my seat as it was just so realistic and half the time i was freaked out at what was playing out in front of my eyes! I was never bored, the film's run time was ideal, it was refreshing that the film wasn't too long. I cried, this film is very sad and at the end you can't reassure yourself that it was only a movie because you know that the story was true and that's crushing. I thought it was that good that i want to see it again already and i came straight home and bought the book 'Into Thin Air'.
Ex Machina (2014)
Brilliant Cast...Brilliant Film
What a great film, i was entertained from beginning to end. The cast were brilliant. Alicia Vikander is definitely going to be an actress to watch, I think she has a great career ahead of her, same goes for Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Issac is fast becoming one of my favourite actors. Special mention also has to go to the location as it was absolutely breathtaking! Even though i figured out where the film was heading, i still found how it played out to be very shocking and affecting. A few tiny things did bug me a little but not enough that they spoiled my enjoyment. I highly recommend this film and i would certainly watch it again.
Inside Out (2015)
Not Quite What I Expected But Still Worth Watching
I was very excited to finally watch this movie as i am definitely a Disney and Pixar addict but i'm sad to report that i was actually disappointed. Perhaps it was my high expectations and the praise that a lot of my friends had bestowed upon it but i just wasn't blown away by it. For me it didn't even come close to most of the other Pixar movies i have seen, most of which received a ten out of ten rating from me. My biggest problem was that i just didn't laugh very much and i usually find Pixar movies hilarious, I also didn't fall in love with any of the characters and i usually always come away with a favourite but on this occasion i did not. I was entertained though and i do appreciate that the film was clever, it also looked fantastic and it did at points either make me cry or it managed to warm my heart. I just expected more and for me personally, i felt that it didn't fully deliver but i can see why other people love it.
The Visit (2015)
Yet Another Trailer Movie...But It's Not Terrible...
I've been excited to watch this film ever since i seen the trailer because i thought it looked really creepy but disappointingly the trailer pretty much showed all of the creepy scenes, so all of the scares were expected, apart from one...I very much jumped out of my skin. The grandma was extremely creepy throughout, unfortunately she is one of the only good things about this film. The other good thing was the twist, i actually didn't see that coming and i thought the film was heading in a completely different direction. Now the bad points - The Acting! it was terrible! The children were extremely annoying (last i checked that's not how children speak). Certain things just weren't realistic, scenes had wasted potential and others were pretty pointless and The rapping! oh god...the rapping! I did laugh more than i would have wanted to but for me the film wasn't a complete failure because grandma most definitely gave me the creeps.
Under the Dome (2013)
Not Bad But Probably Won't Be Revisiting Chester's Mill
I have just completed the third season and unfortunately i am relieved that it has come to an end. I feel sad saying that because i really enjoyed the first two seasons but i didn't enjoy the third season's story line at all! When i began watching this I thought this show was really cheesy, had dodgy special effects and often featured some cringe-worthy acting. I'm glad i stuck with it because all of these improved along the way (apart from the SFX), The shows musical score is also one of the worst i have ever heard, especially when a certain couple embrace, it reminded me of the music you would hear in a terrible American day time soap opera. The show does have some positives though, you do begin to care about some of the characters and their fates, They are not afraid to kill off main characters and this can happen at any second, Most of the cast are easy on the eyes and the story was really interesting in the first two seasons. It ends in a satisfying enough way but there does seem to be an obvious set up for a fourth season but i am actually glad it got cancelled before it got even worse. I am currently reading the book and so far, apart from a few character names, it has been very different from the TV show and yes, the book probably is better.
The Big Wedding (2013)
Didn't think it could be that bad..it was!
Oh dear! I couldn't understand how there could be so many negative reviews for a film with such a great cast but believe me...now i completely understand. This 'comedy' was severely lacking any laughs, i barely even chuckled and i have been told that i laugh at everything. The film was also unnecessarily raunchy at times, which felt very out of place with the tone of the film and it was just awkward to watch. There wasn't even a decent story line and i didn't feel like any real lessons were learned. What was the point? I also just didn't care about the characters, which is strange considering how much i love some of these actors (De Niro, Keaton, Sarandon and Williams). Positive points....the film and the actors looked nice. Disappointingly this just turned out to be a waste of an afternoon and i usually love these kind of movies. So i'd say avoid unless you are a huge fan of these actors and need to see every film they have ever been in.
Whatever Works (2009)
Just A Tad Unbelievable...
I feel like i have mixed feelings about this film. It's not quite what i expected. I was expecting a comedy but i just didn't find it funny at all. Now i haven't watched Curb Your Enthusiasm or Seinfield so maybe if you like those shows you would find some humour in this film? I just found it to be a bit depressing and slightly awkward to watch. Don't get me wrong i didn't dislike it, i just probably didn't get the point of it. The biggest positive of this film for me was Rachel Evan Wood, I think this is the most likable character i have ever seen her play, she was adorable and very beautiful. I couldn't suspend my belief enough to find it believable that she would fall for Larry David... I thought everyone did a good job acting wise but I felt quite awkward every time Larry David talked to the audience watching the film, it felt quite forced and i think it was meant to be more natural. Even though i appear to have more negatives than positives about this film, I still found it to be very watchable. If you like very dry humour then you will probably enjoy this film.
Enemy (2013)
Bizarre But Very Interesting Movie
I'll start off by saying that when this film ended, i turned to my husband and said, "Eh? I don't get it!" and he replied "I don't have a clue either". Now this would usually result in me getting annoyed and hate on a movie but i can't, because i still actually enjoyed it. I enjoyed it enough to go searching on the internet for answers and when i found a very helpful analysis, i appreciated the movie more than i initially did. The acting was brilliant and i thought the film's styling and the music worked very well (The music had a Hitchcockian vibe to it, i felt, and it worked very well). I had just watched Prisoners, which i absolutely loved and watched this because it was the same director. If i hadn't known it was the same director then i wouldn't have been able to tell because both films are so different in style. Enemy is pretty raunchy and has quite a lot of nudity this isn't a bad thing, i just wasn't expecting it to be like that. Also be warned if you are terrified of spiders and really want to see this movie then prepare yourself before hand to be freaked out. I'm definitely going to give this movie another go in the future and i'm also going to have a read of the book. I am desperate to make sense of this movie.
Prisoners (2013)
Absolutely Amazing Film
I loved this movie, it was an interesting story told very well, i didn't even notice the long run time and that's always a very good sign. The acting was brilliant from everyone involved especially Jake, he just gets better and better. I solved the mystery so nothing came as a great shock but i still had a great time waiting to see if i was right and i felt very smart when i had guessed correctly, as i thought the film was very clever. The style of the movie was superb, it was very atmospheric and it was extremely tense to watch, i was on edge the whole way through. My only regret is that i took so long to watch it. I would definitely watch it again.
The Gallows (2015)
What A Disappointment! Just Watch The Trailer!
I've been desperate to see this film ever since i watched the trailer but i wish i hadn't bothered! The trailer is so much better than the final film. I'm one of the few people who is actually quite fond of the found footage horror genre, i feel that it adds realism and that adds to the movie's scare factor for me. unfortunately i found the usual found footage creepy atmosphere to be missing from this film. I wasn't keen on any of the characters, therefore, i really didn't care what happened to them. I found the film to be quite boring and it wasted so many chances for potential scares, also the best scares (apart from the end) were all in the trailer, so there weren't many surprises to be had. I did like the creepy ending because i did get creeped out a bit, but the reason for the film ending up there was absolutely ridiculous and a very, very annoying plot hole! It would have been kind of clever if it had made more sense, i also predicted a lot of things that happened. It's so annoying because this could have been really good, the antagonist had a lot of creepy potential but it was wasted, as was the creepy school setting. I jumped a couple of times but it wasn't a hand squeezing or hide your eyes movie and for me that's the whole point.
Interstellar (2014)
What The Hell Did I Just Watch!
I'm actually really angry right now, a few people recommended this film to me and i just don't understand why?! Maybe i'm just not that smart. I barely understood it and most of it went over my head. I pretty much relied on the synopsis to understand what was going on, and if a film is that hard for me to follow, then it obviously just isn't for me. I can't fault the visuals, music or the majority of the acting - just the story, and in particular the turn it took at the end...what was that? why? there was no need! I was bored at the start. Then the film peaked my interest once they were in space and then the turn it took just made me fed up and annoyed. I don't seem to love Christopher Nolan as much as everyone else does, i enjoyed his earlier films and two of the Batman films but most of his films just end up boring me. It's disappointing because i usually always love his casting choices and i want to like his films but most of them just don't engage me. Maybe he just isn't for me. Jon enjoyed this more than me and gave it 7/10 but even he admitted that he didn't understand the majority of it and he also enlisted the help of the synopsis. I guess if you haven't watched it give it a go, you may enjoy it or like me you might wish that you'd spent the past three hours doing something else...
Gone Girl (2014)
What A Wild Journey! I Don't Understand All Of The Bad Reviews
I have put off watching this film for a while now due to the films run time, i can often get restless if a film goes on for over two hours. I'm glad i decided to watch it at home instead of at the cinema but the run time actually didn't bother me as i was too wrapped up in the story unfolding on screen. I had unfortunately previously had many of the plot points already spoiled for me so nothing came as a shock, maybe it is because i knew what to expect that i could just enjoy the film for the entertaining ride that it is and maybe that's why i managed to not get mad at the possible plot holes? Don't get me wrong there are certain moments that annoyed me because i found them unbelievable but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the film as a whole. I also wish that the film had ended better but maybe it ended the same way as the book ended? I have still to read it. I thought that all of the acting in this film was superb and i thought David Fincher did a great job of bringing the film together, i am a big fan of Fincher's style and once again for me he didn't disappoint. I'm now looking forward to reading Gillian Flynn's book so that i can compare the two.
Identity Thief (2013)
Why So Many Bad Reviews? This Film Hit Me in The Feels
I expected this to be pretty bad as i hadn't seen a lot of good reviews for it, I don't really understand why... Fair enough it wasn't hilarious and the best comedy moments were probably in the trailer but this film is so much more than a comedy. It had so much heart and at the end i even got teary. The friendship that i saw developing was very heartwarming and even though Diana/Melissa started off as a terrible person responsible for potentially destroying Sandy's life, i felt so sorry for her when i found out she was filling her life with meaningless possessions just to fill her empty life. I enjoyed everyone's performances in this movie especially Melissa's. So don't just listen to the negative reviews that are around and give this film a fair chance, i certainly don't regret it.
Rock of Ages (2012)
Pleasantly Surprised: A Lot Better Than Expected
I wasn't expecting much from this movie but i actually ended up finding it a pretty fun ride. I thought almost all of the musical performances were brilliant, especially Diego Boneta, Tom Cruise and Malin Akerman, although i felt Julianne Hough was a tad nasally. The story line wasn't the best and rather cheesy at parts but it's a musical and in those performances it excelled. I also thought that it was a very good looking movie and that nearly everyone's hair, makeup and clothing looked brilliant. The girls looked gorgeous. I wasn't so keen on Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin in this movie, i can't fault their singing but i didn't find their performances believable. I was distracted by Russell's terrible Scouse accent, Alec's terrible hair piece and a very strange romantic sub plot which came out of no where... I recommend this movie if you enjoy musicals, loved 80s rock music or are just after a movie that is a bit of fun and nice to look at.
Unfriended (2014)
Unfriended - Tense And Creepy Little Horror With A Good Gimmick
I thought that Unfriended was a pretty clever film and I liked that it attempted to try something different. I think it was quite a successful gimmick and it was certainly a good aid to the tension. I felt like I was part of their ongoing conversations and a voyeur to their fates, this really added to the scare factor. I was creeped out by this film, enough to hold on to hubby's hand VERY tightly but I wasn't terrified (no hiding my eyes). I did slightly find myself egging on the antagonist of the film because the characters weren't exactly the most likable of people and they kind of deserved what happens to them, to a point. I thought the gore and suspense were very well done. very enjoyable if you can get past how it was filmed.
