Doom (2005)
An above par Aliens clone.
Weaknesses: Varies from the game storyline in as much that there are no teleportals leading to hell and no demons as enemies but "mutants" which reduces this film to a generic sci-fi/action/horror movie.
Strengths: Despite being by the book, the movie is executed well, there are no scenes that make the viewer cringe at being so corny. The atmosphere is excellent and Doom has enough action to keep the casual action movie fan and die hard Doom fans happy, that is if the Doom fan boys can get over the "no hell" premise. Also an excellent hand-to-hand scene between a burly marine and a Baron of Hell (Doom 3 version)is fantastic and in all probability the best scene in the movie. Other highlights include scenes with the BFG 9000 including a tribute to the gun's name. The movie includes an interesting role-reversal between the two main characters at the end. Furthermore the FPS perspective at the climax is actually very innovative. The inclusion of the Rock in the cast keeps a "wire-fu" fight scene from descending into mediocrity.
Final thought: definitely not Shakespeare, but again it is executed well and is much better than it's fellow Aliens clones like Resident Evil, Underworld or Ghosts of Mars, etc. Definitely worth the $5.50 ticket.
6.5/10 aka thumbs up.
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
Dissappointing. (Contains spoilers)
Possible Spoiler alert.
This films biggest flaw is that it ignores the message from the first two, "The Future is not set. There is no fate but what we make for ourselves." This film throws that concept out the window. The film's second biggest flaw is the ending, it's too indesicisive, Judgment Day still goes on despite all that happened in T2? Give me a break! Either make the bunker at the end the SkyNet Core, or at least the film shouldn't have foreshadowed that the future could be changed because at the end the future can't. Also what happened to Brad Fiedel's musical score? (Except during the end credits?) Also more of the future war would have been should have been shown besides the overhead shots that rolled before the opening credits. Dissapointing when compared to the first two. But to it's credit it did stick in a cameo from Earl Boen (Dr. Silberman) which was one of the very few redeeming features of the movie. Instead of this you should try wither one of the first two.
The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988)
Best of the Bunch.
This is the best of all the Incredible Hulk TV movies on the grounds that it had a satisfying ending. All the other Hulk movies were good movies, but the ending just didn't deliver. Admittedly the story is actually the weakest of the Hulk movies but Bixby and crew inflate the material to make this a very satisfying movie of the week and coupled with the good ending this is again the best Hulk to date.
Hulk (2003)
Bixby was better.
The Hulk is an OK movie but it lags when comapared to the Bixby telemovie of the late 70's. Sure this one has better special effects and is closer to the comic, but the ending makes no sense and the acting can't hold up to the aformentioned 70s motion picture I wanted to see something other than green-guy smashing things I wanted to see the theme of alienation and the tragedy of Banner's situiaiton, which the movie just doesn't deliver. Hulk isn't bad. it just can't rise above mediocrity.
Collateral Damage (2002)
Definetly not one of Arnold's best.
This movie's major down fall is that there actually is very little action in the movie. There's a few good action scenes peppered here and there but overall the movie seems to be a Drama, unfortunately the acting in this movie just isn't good enough to correctly execute the drama so the movie slumps 1/3 of the way through and never recovers.
The Core (2003)
Armaggedon was better.
I saw on a tv spot for this film that this "Was the event Armaggedon wanted to be." Granted this was a gross innacuracy, as while Armaggedon was a long-shot, it was scientifically and logically feasible, plus unlike this film Armageddon actually had character development and character backstories. All in all the Core is a decent enjoyable sci-fi disaster movie, that while smacking of impossibilty, will entertain you for two hours, a decent movie, but if you're looking for a great end of the world flick, try Armaggedon.
Powder (1995)
Better than Starman, it's good but not great.
The film Powder, is a decent, enlightening flick on tolerance, acceptance, undestanding etc. But it is also nothing overly special. The movie's strongest point is from the powerful acting by Hedriksen and Goldblum. Powder is recommended as a rental, but it's no film of the year. Finally just for once I'd like to see a movie about a supernatural human like Powder, where the moral is something other than "Life on earth is an unrealized panthestic heaven."
Firefly (2002)
It ain't Farscape
A decent sci-fi series, that works in western and science fiction elements. However the series is just that decent, while not bad there's nothing that really makes the show stand out. If you're looking for sci-fi that is above decent and actually very good, I recommend the wildly succesful Farscape.
Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002)
Could have been better. *Warning*-contains spoilers!
This movie's major problem is that there is virtually no scene cohesion at all. The film's director was made his debut in this film and it shows, as the movie jumps from scene to scene with virtually no explanation on how or why. The second problem wit the film is that Kirsty is made to be the villian when she agrees to get Pinhead 5 souls, this ruins the way her character was set up in the earlier Hellraiser movies. Also why would Kirsty bother opening the puzzle box again if she knew what was in inside? The third thing that is wrong is that in the deleted scenes Pinhead admits that in Hellraiser 2 he only saved Kirsty so he could have her soul later on ruins, one of the best scenes from Hellraiser 2. If you're looking for a good Hellraiser movie, try the first or second films in the series and avoid the lackluster sequels.
Farscape (1999)
This is incredible.
This is beyond a shadow of a doubt one of the greatest Sci-fi series ever made, it Browder deserves to have his name next to the likes of Shatner! The acting and production on this show is top-notch, they could easily pass for the acting/production of a movie.
Mission to Mars (2000)
Awful, plain awful. What was Gary Sinise thinking?
Probably on the 10 worst movies ever made list. What could have been a decent and even great movie is consistently ruined by horrible timing. 30 minutes into the film your interested in the characters, by the end of the film you are board to death and could care less. Avoid this movie at all costs.
The Meteor Man (1993)
One of the best movies I have ever seen.
Why did this movie not make it? The idea was original and the movie was very funny with great acting all around, especially from Townsend who is totally believable. The ending was in my book one of the most exciting and uplifting endings in movie history, and that is just one of the many great scenes in this picture! So do yourself a favor and watch this movie.
Star Fox 64 (1997)
This was the game of my childhood.
I loved this game. The plot enthralled me, the characters were so believable, the graphics and sound were out of this world, the control was silky smooth. I truly loved this game. This was the game I dreamed about in my sleep, I had imaginary conversations with the characters, that's how great this game is, please play it.
Farscape: Premiere (1999)
Great Sci-fi
Great characters, great acting, great dialogue, incredible plot twists in plain language one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life. Do yourself a favor and watch this show, you won't regret it. This show re-writes the book on Sci-Fi!
Street Fighter (1994)
Come on people, this was a decent movie!
I just don't get why everybody did not like this movie. I mean it wasn't Shakespeare but I was very entertained for the roughly 100 minutes that the movie ran. Van Damme isn't the greatest but he was still beleivable This was a decent action movie with a plot and with some decent emotion and acting. Give it a break already!
